New Hampshire: The Polls Were Right And The Clinton Campaign Kicked Some Kumbaya.

Lost in all of the flurry of the "pollsters and pundits are idiots" narrative that developed through the late hours of Tuesday and was in full spread glory today was perhaps the simplest and most accurate explanation of what happened on Tuesday.

While a man much wiser than I was offering the first sentence, " two political dynasties died yesterday in the snows of New Hampshire" the voters were voting.

Now, for some in D.C., allow me to point out the obvious.

The polls were conducted on January 4th, 5th and 6th.

And I will forever stand by this - if the election had been held on one of those days, Barack Obama would have won, perhaps by the margins expected.

But what some are missing who are throwing mud at pollsters and pundits is a calendar - the election was on the 8th. Easily forgotten, perhaps it was the unseasonably warm weather.

The story line that dominated the news and the faces of the Clinton senior staff on Tuesday was all too real, and all too accurate. A major loss by Hillary would indeed have put the Clinton dynasty to bed, and looking at President Clinton, he, frankly, looks like he wouldn't be all that upset by the prospect of some peace and quiet.

But three things happened from the last poll call to last count of the votes. And in the 24 minute news cycle, is anyone surprised that 48 hours is an eternity?

Clearly, a wave of sympathy broke towards Hillary from a number of fronts; yes, it was the tears but it was also the words of her philandering husband, "I can't make her any younger" - if you don't think that got her some votes from women, you're insane, and the feeling that, even if you didn't like her, it's hard to watch someone's dream come to an end, and Barack is going to win anyway, so I'll vote for Hillary. I heard that exact statement from three people.

When the curtain closes and you vote, it is an entirely a personal relationship and on Tuesday, the emotion was with Hillary.

The second thing is the Clinton Campaign played hard and smart the last 24 hours.

Hard. And smart.

The news of the pending huge campaign shake-up dominated the news cycle, encouraging I think supporters because it said we're going to fight and learn and if we have to make changes, we will. There now is some mystical where did that rumor come from, well, it came from Clinton campaign surrogates talking about it directly and openly on the record to the media that's where. It's no mystery.

The Clinton Campaign has played the gender card masterfully and consciously. I was doing Radio Row almost all day on Tuesday at the Radisson, enjoying conversations and appearing on shows like Thom Hartmann. Every single Clinton surrogate I saw pulled me aside and told me how much her tears had touched them. They may not have planned the moment, but they knew the power of it. Edwards also screwed up big time, Chris Matthews fueled the fire and the sympathy vote boomed.

Hats off to the Clinton Surrogates who I say working hard that day, Senator Evan Bayh, Elizabeth Bagley, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Congressman Jim McGovern and Terry McAuliffe. I can flat out tell you they were hustling and talking to any media outlet that would listen, all day I say them working and working and working. It was impressive.

And also during the last 24 hours, there were a couple of curious incidents.

At a Clinton Campaign event, tight security with Secret Service present, a man held up a sign, about three feet by three feet saying: IRON MY SHIRT. In the front row, by the candidate.

Have you ever tried to carry a sign into a political event? A Clinton event? With Secret Service standing there? A big sign? Right to the front? Think about it.

You don't have to think about this introduction that Hillary was given, by a person chosen by the campaign.

Today, in Dover, Francine Torge, a former John Edwards supporter, said this while introducing Mrs. Clinton: "Some people compare one of the other candidates to John F. Kennedy. But he was assassinated. And Lyndon Baines Johnson was the one who actually" passed the civil rights legislation.

Hillary was standing next to Francine when she said this and, of course, the Clinton Campaign issued immediate denials.

What are the chances that someone introducing the former first lady the day before the most important day in her political life gets to wing it? About as high as walking to the front of a packed campaign event with a sign requesting laundry service.

While this was going on, even Obama supporters were noticing and worrying about the campaign's seeming indifference to the last 24 hours, a close second in New Hampshire was the dream of the Obama campaign a week ago, but now they were letting talk of 15 point win dominate the weekend. When the Clintons grabbed the last 24 hour news cycle, the Obama Campaign was talking about, well, nothing really.

When people were talking about Obama, it was about the issue of his NH Campaign Co-Chair being a lobbyist and if you are a Obama supporter, take note, the chinks in the armor that together make hope look like a marketing strategy and not a core belief are a real problem.

Hope doesn't vote present. Hope doesn't help Joe Lieberman in Connecticut. Hope doesn't have its own PAC.

More surprisingly in retrospect was that the Obama Camp wasn't playing the expectations game, lowering the bar a bit, talking about the challenges their guy faced in Iowa and New Hampshire and how a first in Iowa combined with a second in New Hampshire was a huge win.

They weren't pushing back on the Clinton Campaign Restructure story dominating and they didn't seem to be really concerned at all about the all Clinton, all the time Monday and Tuesday news cycle, or maybe they thought it was hurting her, I have no idea.

Which leads us back to the polls.

The polls were right and the Clinton Camp knew they were right. They weren't fighting like a cornered animal for the fun of it, trust me. And they played their cards masterfully and worked their asses off over the last twenty four hours.

A little luck, a lot of work, and an opponent who seemed to take twenty-fours off, add it up, and one political dynasty made it out of the melting snow just fine thank you.

As for the dynasty some feel might be in the making, today was as big a wake-up call as last Thursday was for Hillary.

We'll see if he is as fast a learner as Hillary clearly proved to be.

My take:

HILLARY'S 'CRY' AND CLINTON VOTE FRAUD:
NH POLLS WERE RIGHT

video: [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpk5GaAAutQ]

Pollsters, pundits and media types listen up! The mawkish hand-wringing and self-incrimination can stop. You were not wrong. Your New Hampshire poll numbers were, in fact, correct.

Let me explain....

Your polls predicted Clinton 30%, Obama 38%, Edwards 18%.

The actual results were Clinton 39%, Obama 36%, Edwards 17%.

The only apparent error is in hillary clinton's numbers.

But if we adjust for standard-issue clinton hanky-panky, hillary's numbers are correct, too.

What happened....

When deconstructing clinton moves, Machiavelli will always make more sense than Ockham. Consider this scenario:

The reverse mo from the Iowa loss was quickly transforming New Hampshire, hillary's putative firewall, into her Last Stand. Clinton internal polls confirmed what was in the field: A humiliating defeat ahead in the Granite State, perhaps double-digit, for the quondam shoo-in. Worse, the end of The Reign of Clinton. (Make that 'Better' if you are not a clinton: You could have cut the pre-primary Schadenfreude on both sides of the aisle with a knife.)

What to do? (Need you ask?)

By the weekend before the New Hampshire primary, the clintons had all the vote fraud in place--ballots to be stuffed, out-of-staters-for-hillary queued up and ready to go. (Locals would later report an unusually large number of vehicles with Massachusetts plates on election day.)

What the clintons needed now was a rationale for what would be a results-altering discrepancy in hillary's numbers.

Hence the 'cry.'

But the stage had to be set. Nonhumans don't cry. And neither do commanders in chief, (although for missus clinton, perceived weakness is secondary to short-term gain: She has played the victim card for votes and power throughout her life and repeatedly during this campaign.)

And so we had the "Access Hollywood" prequel.

And for good measure, a sexist old saw tailored precisely to foment the pre-Friedan female: The post-'cry' cry, 'Iron my shirt!'

So was I and it was the Republicans in Congress that carries the civil right bill through. What do you mean by "are you really a Republican"? A civil rights supporter, correct?

I cannot believe folks are making such a big deal of either Hills win or Obama's second place finish! He did great considering NH is Clinton country and they TIED FOR DELEGATES!!!

Calm down already! For the first time we have a real race!

I'm a unshakable Obama supporter and was disappointed but it's early days yet..... The Clintons will, as they always do, eat their young....

Calculated playing to the media with the "crying" tactic is despicable. This is typical Clinton Machine Tactics at it's best. No "Clinton hating", just pure fact. No one is better at smear and destroy tactics than the Clintons. Dick Morris verified this over and over. It is always prudent to search for the reason (or tactic) as to why the pollsters were wrong in NH when the Clintons are involved. Just a note, to be historically accurate, it was the Repulicans in congress who passed the civil rights legislation over the objections of the Southern Dems. Johnson correctely signed the bill into law. This was a team effort that is not seen in this devisive congress of the present.

ABC is backing Clinton. During a PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE someone brings out the fact that people don't like Hillary (remeber the woman vote). Later the MSM reported that she was attacked by Obama and Edwards even though see actually attacked them and Obama did not really respond to her (remember the woman vote). Next, all of a sudden a woman ask Hillary a question that caused her to TEAR UP (remember the woman vote) and immediately afterwards she attacked Obama. Then Fox's newpaper (which backs Hillary) put out a harsh picture of Hillary on the front page along with other media outlets which the CLINTONS have a lot of pull with (remember the woman vote). Next she attacks Obama again (with lies) and Bill attacks Obama (with lies). All of a sudden Hillary comes back with the MAJORITY OF THE WOMAN VOTE. Now if you do research right now you will see there is evidence of VOTER FRAUD right now in New Hampshire. The VOTING MACHINES (Diebold) gave Hillary a 7% advantage over Obama. They have proof that Ron Paul's votes weren't even counted. He actually BEAT Rudy. And to cover there tracks they had to WOMAN who asked Hillary the question say that she voted for Obama. YEAH RIGHT. This is OUR DEMOCRACY that will be stolen from us again. Please do your research. Tell friends and family. The MSM will not report this. Bush is backing Hillary. The MSM is backing Hillary. They need her to WIN. Make a NOTE* Dick Morris (who was Bill Clinton Brain) told Sean Hannity on his show that the Clintons are going to pull a Sister Soulja Moment (look it up) on Obama. This is a stunt that Bill Clinton used to Beat Jesse Jackson. Dick Morris said it will be very subtle. NOW- If you listen to all the PUNDITS today, what are they saying. PEOPLE said they would support Obama during the polls but since this was a private Primary, they voted for Hillary because they did not want to vote for a BLACK MAN. check BostonNow.com and Roguegoverment.com.

Hillary squeaked a 2pt lead in a state that was supposed to be her stronghold. 2 months ago she was 20 pts. ahead in that state.
obama closed an 18 pt. gap in 2 months. pretty impressive, I'd say.
And in terms of delagates, it's a tie.
Folks, this is going to be a battle. Obama is up against the Clinton machine. Success will be hard, but it will be earned.
And it will make him a better candidate. This is the vetting process everyone has been asking for.

I'm not even sure who you suppport (which is a good trick in itself). But your analysis here is spot on. There is a meme to the effect of "Nobody Swiftboats a Clinton campaign", but I think that really means "We ain't gonna give up easy".

This is a weird campaign on the D side. Whether their supporters believe it or not, any of Obama, Edwards, or Clinton would represent a large, and refreshing, change. It is unusual, if not unprecedented, to have THREE candidates for the nomination who should all be acceptable to the "average" Democrat.

The campaign proceeds. As I have stated in other blog comments, the one critical thing we (presumably Democrats) need to bear in mind is: do not irretrievably criticize another Democratic candidate. Do not say "I will never vote for [ ]" if [ ] is a Democrat.

ANY of the Democratic candidates for President would be better than ANY of the Republican candidates for President. Try to remember that.

Good. Now I know that there is someone who know how to fight against these ruthless Republican bastards. And no I don't just wish we could all just get along.

Interesting analysis, and probably right on the money. The Obama campaign is going to have to learn not to let its guard down.

But this is exactly why TV is useless and people need to get information on policy and voting records. Because if you're right, we're going to get manipulated again. And that feels like salt in an open wound.

Why the MSM and their political "experts" are worse than crack addicts: We have been programmed that HRC has been the righttful front running heir to the Democrats taking the White House for over a year, yet after one contest they drop her like a empty pipe and head the the next "drug dealer" Obam! Did they forget Woman? Obama gets a warm and fuzzy hopeful vote out of the first contest and who want to make headlines for the country by their "votes", and the press is somehow blindsided by not listennig to the people of the country that we atre demanding change, and yes many college age and slightly above are going to turn out in a CAUCUS state and all the sudden a tsunami of press, the same press that established HRC, trips all over themselves buying his potion. The establishemnt of HRC didn't magically disappear because of Iowa! New Hampshire is a Primary state where anyone can vote anyway they "feel' or "want" and the WOMEN didn't want HRC out. The ability to for any woman, even one that is not cherished much less a professional actor like Hillary, to gather the girls around the table and get a little teary eyed should never be counted out. The "Helen Reddy" factor is also always at play also, any time HRC can play it if her timing and events of these tactics used are legitimate cards in play. Like they say; Timing is everything. But the MSM were ridiculous to sell out to Obama and create a huge false feeding frenzy after Iowa for Obama, the result of his smart tactics using the caucus format. Now they spin the overhype that One loss followed by a win is somehow a comeback for the Frontrunner HRC! This is also not credible and nonsensical by the press!
