Today, Al Gore gave a wonderful speech in Norway, accepting his Nobel Prize.
Seven years ago today, Al Gore gave a different speech, conceding his race for The White House.
The day he was announced as the Nobel Prize winner in October was the fifth anniversary of the vote on the war in Iraq.
Al Gore's speech was very good, you can read it here.
And in it, he noted that:
Last September 21, as the Northern Hemisphere tilted away from the sun, scientists reported with unprecedented distress that the North Polar ice cap is "falling off a cliff." One study estimated that it could be completely gone during summer in less than 22 years. Another new study, to be presented by U.S. Navy researchers later this week, warns it could happen in as little as 7 years.
Seven years from now.
Time is flying by and we aren't nearly doing enough to fight global warming - seven years from now, where we will be as a country and a world?
Will we still be creeping along and dealing with global warming on the edges?
There are many ways to choose a Presidential Candidate this year; you certainly would be justified in choosing one on the issue of Iraq alone,
but since Al Gore's not running for The White House, don't forget global warming as a core issue for next year, don't take platitudes, look for real policy and real promises of action. Like Iraq, it impacts everything we are doing, and will do as a people.

Come on, gore has the 'karma' of a rock!
The earth has been warming and cooling for billions of years.
It's absurd to think we can do anything about it,
except, of course, SELL items to fight it.
This is not a religion. It is fact-based. Why do you think 17 years ago most countries supported a treaty that acted against the own economic self-interest. The jury is in: global warming exists and it is caused, not surprisingly by carbon emissions. You are wrong. We will be talking about and dealing with the problem for decades. The younger people of this world understand it. The evidence is overwhelming. Why was a conference convened in Bali to address the issue? Why is the military reducing its carbon footprint? Its sad that you allow hatred for a man or group of people prevent you from seeing the clear evidence.
Global warming is not yet on my radar screen. I am more concerned with shorter range problems regarding life on the ground: AIDS, starvation, income inequality- and so forth.
The ozone seems like its miles away- and it is. I trust scientists will solve the problem before all of New York City is submerged under 200 feet of water.
Gore receiving a Nobel is a way of soothing the wounds he suffered in 2000. I thank the Nobel committee for furthering his rehabilitation.
Seven years from now we will not even be talking about GW. You environmental religious freaks will come up with something else to scare everyone about. My guess is it will be another ice age, the complete opposite of what is being discussed today. The consensus will be something else and you will be worshipping those scientists as well. Al Gore will be a memory, a very rich memory, but a memory.
So, seven years from now, what scare tactic will you employ to control our lives?
And yes, Al Gore gave a speech last night, some say it was boring, but when is the debate going to happen? When is he going to debate this issue with someone on the other side? When is he going to stop acting like an elitist and make himself available for discent?
He never will and THAT speaks volumes.
