James D. Scurlock was born in Seattle, Washington on September 15, 1971. He attended the prestigious Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania and has no formal film training. His first film, Parents of the Year, was featured in over 25 film festivals and won numerous awards. He is the author of Maxed Out (Scribner) and producer and director of Maxed Out (Magnolia), which won the Special Jury Prize at South by Southwest and has been featured on Nightline and the Today Show.
