From the President

AAP works with Copyright Alliance to Create List of IP Appointments

AAP, as an active member of the Copyright Alliance, has asked Alliance director Patrick Ross to compile a list of positions that will influence intellectual property policy to be filled under a new president and administration. This will enable the Copyright Alliance to offer suggestions regarding appropriate candidates for these positions to both presidential campaigns.

Although it is unclear at this point who Senators Obama and McCain might choose, AAP believes it essential that key officials who will deal with intellectual property issues in a new administration have a full understanding of the importance of intellectual property rights for those who hold these rights and for broader U.S. economic and trade interests. AAP is concerned, for example, that based on their past academic relationship, Senator Obama might choose among his appointments a divisive figure such as Larry Lessig - a law professor and leading proponent of diminished copyright rights. The Alliance has held meetings with both the Obama and McCain campaigns to express concern for the protection of copyright. AAP and the copyright community hope to join together with the campaigns to put forth individuals who understand the value of intellectual property to U.S. economic interests.

Here's a good test for Obama: Is he more faithful to friends/Lessig or to the power of the AAP lobby?
