America Has a Good Story; But It's Not the One Politicians Tell

Posted: 08/18/2012 8:55 am

It was my mother who first taught me to be wary of people who spent too much time boasting of their greatness. She would pity their insecurity and wonder what weaknesses they were making such an obvious effort to mask with self-praise.

I am often reminded of her lesson when I hear politicians, especially in an election year, indulging in rhetorical excess about the greatness of America. America is, we are told, the exceptional nation: the greatest democracy, the greatest producer of wealth, the model nation that is envied by the world, a people destined to lead the world. In the language of those on the right, America becomes an idol, infused by the Creator with blessings and qualities so self-evident, that to question this article of faith is akin to heresy.

I wonder why we are so insecure that we need to engage in endless self-praise. And I can't help but wonder what the rest of the world thinks of all this in the face of policies and behaviors that make such a wildly different statement.

Aspects of American history and even our present reality paint a not so pretty picture. We were born with the twin original sins: genocide against the indigenous people whose land we settled and slavery. It took decades to end slavery. And it took decades more to grant equal rights to women; and still many more to abolish the racist legal system that perpetuated discrimination against people of color.

We fought aggressive wars of conquest against native Americans and our neighbor to the south. We are the only country to have used nuclear weapons. And, in recent years, we have shamed ourselves with the moral blindness of our policies across the Middle East.

It is both embarrassing and aggravating that our boasting ignores and/or tries to forget this history. It is also flat out wrong. More importantly, it also misses the point, because America does have a good story to tell. It is the one that Barack Obama would often speak of during the 2008 campaign. It is the story of our labor movement that inspired workers world-wide and fought for and helped pass progressive legislation that improved the quality of life for millions. It is our women's movement that led the way, not only for the right to vote, but for gender equality. It is the story of our civil rights movement, that put an end to de jure segregation; our peace movement, that ended a war; our consumer and environmental movements that have given us cleaner water, purer air, safer food and medicines and legal protections against profiteers. And it is the story of immigrants who came here with nothing but their hopes and dreams, fought hardship and discrimination, built a better life for their children and are today the leaders of an extraordinarily diverse country. It is the efforts of these groups combined that tell the story of the country that is America.

My family, like so many other American families, has lived this story. I recall being asked to deliver one of the speeches nominating Jesse Jackson for President at the 1984 Democratic Convention. As I stood at the podium looking out at the sea of delegates who filled the hall. I thought of my father who had come to America at the age of 25, an illegal immigrant. He spent years in fear of deportation, until he received amnesty in the 1930's. And there I stood 50 years later, the son of an illegal immigrant about to nominate the great-grandson of a slave for President! It was a uniquely American story.

The American story is not one about a country that was born great. It is the story of a country that is struggling to become better. And this is the story that is worth telling. It is one infused with humility, a recognition of our failings and our continuing efforts to correct injustice and make change. This may not be the story-line favored by some politicians, but it is one that can inspire.

It has always been intriguing to me that when we poll Americans and ask why they think people in other countries don't like us, many say "because they envy us" or "because they hate our values of freedom and democracy." However, when we poll in the rest of the world, we find that people, in fact, like our values, but wonder why we don't apply our stated values to our policies.

We need to get over our insecurity, stop the hollow boasting, take a long hard look at our flaws and change. When I hear politicians end their speeches with "God bless America", I say, "Amen" -- not because we deserve to be blessed because we are so good, but because we need all the help we can get to become better.

Whether it is ugly or beautiful....America will always be on my mind and in my heart because I am a legal immigrant who came to New York with nothing but a legal document and able to live and stay with my families and friends! It was hard to start with in the beginning but then with tenacity, patience and love we were able to go through the hardship living every day life as it is!.....

It is so inspiring to read another story such as yours my dear friend. While reading your unique but exceptional story gives me goose bumps and I do feel the fresh blood that runs in my veins that I am
a real New Yorker to and from. I came to this country when I was young and like everyone else has the greatest goals and dreams to get a piece or a slice of the "apple" city known as New York. The rest like me still have insecurities but admiration of a country that have produced so many great heroes, dignitaries and well-known people from steveedorings to creative work of arts and sciences, doctorates, etc. America will always be a pioneering country for freedom and democracy! Whatever is the color of your skin won't be a hindrance to your dreams! Follow the path to equality and happiness. God bless America, land of the free and home of the brave!....

Its funny that this sentiment has been ringing through the black community forever... We have always felt the bruises from political speeches that praise this nation and it's "rich history". We've also shunned the term "Founding Fathers". The History Channel had a series called "The History of US" that painted a picture of a nation of defiant, war heroes determined to make their own way as global citizens by any means necessary. However, they only spent 5 minutes on slavery and very little time speaking about the Civil Rights Movement...

Thanks for authoring this and I am sharing it across my Facebook and Twitter feed.

Wow, coming from the same city as Mr. Zogby and also being the grandchild of immigrants who settled in there years ago, the opening paragraph of Mr. Zogby's blog could have been spoken by my own grandmother!
These early immigrants were much more about doing and succeeding than ever about boasting of their accomplishments. My grandparents felt that what they and so many like them did was just what everyone did . . . work hard, achieve the very best you can for your family and pass the result and work ethic on to the next generation.
There is no doubt that my life is better because of them and if there's any boasting or singing praises, it has to be for those, on whose shoulders we stand.
One can only hope that we'll work as hard to achieve for the next generation what our wonderful, humble immigrant parents and grandparents did for us.

I love hearing the "ugly truth" about this country. Most Americans don't like to look back at our dark shadow; it's a shame because, our continued evolution as a nation will always come from looking into our own darkness.

Actually, America was born great back in 1776. But, it has gotten worse since then as it turned from a baby to a zombie. The natives you talk about were really given a raw deal in the 1800's as opposed to the 1600's and 1700's. And as you say, the US is the only country to use weapons of mass destruction in the 1900's against people on a nuclear scale. I expect the 2000's to get worse before it will get better. Perhaps, we will be reborn great once more and move on from our current zombie state. One can only hope.

America, except for a brief period after WWII, has been a lie and an empty promise for all those except the very wealthy.

A country is what you want it to be, we say we are the greatest nation in the world, however when I look around the only aspect I see such greatness is our military. We as a country may have the biggest stick, but we also have the largest prison population in the world. Our people work on average over 55 hours per week while in Europe they only average 35. We pay the highest rates for health care in the world, yet we have millions who would become bankrupt due to a serious illness or accident. The fact is we as a country have become arrogant, when we speak of countries in Europe its in a tone of condescension. Listen to a right leaning contributor when they speak of European countries, it is spoken with contempt and often to compare Obama's policies with that of a European country as if that is an evil thing.

We cannot afford to become arrogant, and to think that we are better than everyone else. We all have faults and it is important to be able to look to other countries and admit they have built a better model in certain aspects of policy and that is might help the US to adopt similar policies. Instead we go on like a teenager absolutely sure we know everything, and are invincible.

Maybe because we took the help of the French, Germans, Russian, Spain in using us against the British and then change to Freedom fries whenever they don't think the way we want them to.

Thank you,Mr Zogby for the insightfull essay. It is a good thing to reflect on our past shortfalls, and accomplishments, and an important thing to remember,is that America, has been in the leadership role, for many other blossoming democratic governments, that have been born in the past, and continue to spring forth to this day.We have been a model for a great many humanistic causes throughout our history, and even though we have fallen short on timelines, and have had to maintain a constant struggle for human rights both here, and abroad, the heart of the patriot lives on to this day....

Republican's new Middle East policy is to go skinny dipping in the Sea of Galilee, which by the way is very disrespectful of the site where the Bible reports that Jesus walked on water.

Bravo! Well said. the same tea party "patriots" who boast the loudest about our exceptionalism are the same people who would destroy the government that the founders created. The British built the country our founding PATRIOTS built a government. The same one we are still using and trying to perfect.

So many countries in the Middle East just wouldn't be 15th century backwaters if it weren't for the fault of the US. Really?

No, so many nations in the ME wouldn't HATE the US and come here to attack us, if we didn't go over there in the first place.
How many South Americans have the ME attacked? How many SouthEast Asians or Finland?

part of Pax Americana unfortunately. You have to take the good with the bad. Or live in Finland or Paraguay instead. Good luck

Zogby is off-base. I don't see the US as boastful. We ARE a great nation. The fact that we have had and will continue to have episodes of bad conduct is not the issue. The fact we acknowledge them and correct them is what makes us great. The country has evolved and will continue to do so so long as our fundamental liberties, as expressed by our founding fathers, is honored and respected.

If Romney is to be believed, we should never apologize for our prior bad conduct.
11:43 AM on 08/22/2012
I never heard Romney say that. I have heard Obama apologize for issues that were addressed and long-forgiven. Why dwell on this?
