There is a bizarre, and even tragic, unreality to the continuing drama playing out in the Democratic primary. Partly due to the seven-week gap between the first 42 contests and this week's match-up in Pennsylvania, and partly due to the tenacity and temerity of the Clintons, this election is being presented as close and not yet over.
But it is over.
Dragging it out any longer only serves to indulge the Clintons' narcissism, while damaging the Democratic party's chances for victory in November. A few observations:
First: The numbers are clear: Clinton cannot surpass Obama's elected delegate total in the contests that remain. It is not unlike a fifty-two lap motor race. In the first forty-three laps, Obama has passed her twice, and built up a lead that is insurmountable. Now, in the midst of the 44th lap, it only appears to be close, but it is not. The only way she could possibly win is either by changing the rules of the game in Michigan and Florida, or convincing a substantial number of superdelegates to cast their ballots for her -- overturning the results of the elections to date. Either of these two scenarios would cause a devastating upheaval within the party, bringing on what I call a "1968 moment."
Second: There is no doubt that the Democratic base has been energized by this election. The record number of voters, volunteers, and contributors point to this fact. But, at the same time, it is important to acknowledge that real damage is occurring within the Democratic constituency. Polls that show a growing fracture within the Democratic coalition should be read as cautionary signs to be heeded. Those Beltway pundits and party regulars who say "Don't worry, after the convention, Democrats will come together" are out of touch with the real damage that has been done in the minds of voters on both sides of the divide.
Early on, Senator Obama spoke eloquently about the degree to which cynicism had infected our politics, resulting in voters no longer believing what politicians have to say. Only those who did not understand his message, or heed the lesson he sought to teach, can believe that Hillary and Bill Clinton will be easily able to undo the negativity they have created. Some voters will surely ask, "Were they lying then, or are they lying now?"
Third: There is no doubt that Senator Clinton is a talented and an extraordinarily intelligent person. Her tragic flaw is her belief that only she is capable of leading. It is this that has caused her to engage in an effort to demean her opponent and engage in the kind of campaign that she once decried as "the politics of personal destruction." It is this that I call her narcissism, and the degree to which it has damaged not only the Democratic chances in November, but also her reputation -- defines the pathological self-destruction that so often follows from narcissistic behavior
This has gone on too long, and should end now. Former President Clinton has argued that all the states should be given a chance to vote. They should have that chance. And, if this campaign were focused on issues and a debate over competing visions of leadership, I would say, "Let it continue."
But this has not been the case. Given the behavior of the Clinton campaign to date, and the expectation this behavior will continue, I believe that prolonging this agony will only create deeper division. For this reason, it should end now.
My fellow superdelegates should wait no longer. As party leaders, we are uniquely positioned, and have the responsibility, to speak out. Indecision only serves to enable bad behavior. It is time for us to either demand that the behavior change, or act to end this now.

is it not obvious to anybody with half a brain that the clintons are in bed with bushco and every kind of washington corruption you could imagine?
is it not obvious to anybody with half a brain that shillary, the neocon's stealth candidate, will stop at NOTHING (and i do mean nothing) to derail obama's candidacy
is it not obvious to anybody with half a brain that the clinton strategy is straight out of the rove playbook - she has no intention of quitting before the convention - she will keep going until she manages to drag obama down into the sewer with her so she can trash his attempts to run an honorable campaign - she will also keep trying to call him out in as many "debates" as possible in order to increase her chances of any little kind of misstep that she can use to further damage him -
there are no words adequate to express the SHEER AND UTTER LOATHING that i have for shillary and her agenda to keep washington's culture of corruption just the way it's been for the last 8 years and destroy a truly honorable, qualified and deserving candidate in the process
i did not imagine that it would be possible to despise a politican more than i despise bush and all of his cronies - now i know that i was wrong about that
I WILL NEVER CAST A VOTE FOR THIS DESPICABLE EXCUSE FOR A HUMAN BEING
Uhmmm. Just a minute, please.
FIRST: Are superdelegates "part of the game" or not?
Now if you want to argue that superdelegates ought NOT be part of the game, I'm happy to agree, but how many times can you throw out Florida and still argue for the purity of the game's rules?
SECOND: "Damage to the party"? Defined how? Anyone who blames Hillary Clinton for the election of John McCain is already damaged.
THIRD: As to fatal flaws: Sir, with all due respect, you do not and CANNOT know what Hillary Clinton BELIEVES. Unless you're a telepath. Are you a telepath?
You have a good point. We can't know what Hillary believes because it changes depending on the day, how far behind she is, whether she had enough sleep, whether she's under sniper attack while getting her latte from the Senate cafe...
"Anyone who blames Hillary Clinton for the election of John McCain is already damaged."
So you don't think it's damaging for a leader in the Democratic party to consistently refer to their party's presumptive nominee as inexperienced and incapable of being president? Oh wait, I'm sorry, are we still dancing this waltz around the fact that she has no chance of winning save through usurpation via superdelegates?
"Now if you want to argue that superdelegates ought NOT be part of the game, I'm happy to agree, but how many times can you throw out Florida and still argue for the purity of the game's rules?"
That's really only half-right. The game's "rules" aren't being violated at all. No one is banning superdelegates from voting for a candidate, no one is suddenly throwing out the superdelegate vote before the convention, all anyone is saying is that the superdelegate vote should not over-ride the will of the people. Superdelegates, as people who have a vested interest in the success of their party, should know that to do so would be tantamount to party suicide. They are supposed to vote for the candidate with the best chance of winning in November, and the only one with a chance of winning in November is the one that Democrats actually voted for. To do otherwise would give no one a chance at beating McCain, because he'll just be Nixon in 1968, calling us elitists who don't listen to their own constituents.
Check the ABC News story on Congressional Pork: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Vote2008/Story?id=4572406&page=2
"Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., received 53 earmarks for his state, worth $97.4 million."
Obama asked for a earmark for his wife's employer, and her salary more than doubled.
"Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has never asked for an earmark."
Let's all chant together "Yes we can, yes we can. WE WANT MORE EARMARKS, MORE PORK, MORE CORRUPTION"
And then chant "Change we can believe in. WE WANT MORE PORK, MORE IGNORANCE, MORE CORRUPTION".
Oh would that be the John McCain who was somehow involved with the Keating Five? Yes I'm sure he could tell us a thing or two about corruption.
Not sure what your point is. Even if you are 100% correct he's still the nominee. I'm sure I can find worse by Clinton and McCain. Don't assume all Obama supporters are convinced he's squeaky clean.
EXACTLY!
Mentioning political corruption could be career limiting for Mr. McCain. It may inspire someone raise the specter of the Keating 5. I'm sure he'd rather forget that entire Savings & Loan debacle. It might remind people of the current financial market debacle.
Do you really think people care about the Keating 5? Most voters have no idea what it involved and you will see eyes glaze over if it comes up in the campaign.
There are plenty of things to go after McCain about, but the Keating 5 is a losing proposition as a campaign weapon.
"Obama asked for a earmark for his wife's employer, and her salary more than doubled."
Oh what a surprise, that part is neither in the ABCNews article you linked, nor is it cited by you anywhere else in your post.
Nice try, Karl Rove. What's next? Gonna start telling us how Barack Obama is a muslim bent on destroying America?
I disagree with you and I do not appreciate your deciding for all those states remaining to vote, that they don't need to vote and shouldn't have a say because its already been decided. I happen to like and appreciate being in a state, that doesn't usually get to have any kind of a say in who gets elected, having a say and I wish you would stop trying to convince Hillary to just foldup and throw in the towel.
Well sorry but it's been decided before your chance to vote. Which is usually the case.
Umm. . . If you read the whole post, he says the primary contest either needs to end or Hillary needs to stop using the politics of personal destruction. Unfortunately, because Hillary's supporters know her only real shot at winning is through the personal destruction of Obama, they have no problem with her acting like Karl Rove.
She is causing a huge rift in the democratic party. A rift that will only intensify if she somehow convinces the super delegates to go against the will of the voters. That was Mr Zogby's point - the super delegates should either choose now, or demand that the personal attacks from Hillary stop.
He specifically said, "My fellow superdelegates should wait no longer. As party leaders, we are uniquely positioned, and have the responsibility, to speak out. Indecision only serves to enable bad behavior. It is time for us to either demand that the behavior change, or act to end this now."
Maybe if you read the whole article before posting next time, you can avoid making the same mistake again.
That is not the point of the article, the point of the article is to keep the obama drum beat, zogby as his surrogate, to have clinton leave the race...it is so clear to see the tactic. obama himself will lie and say she should stay in, but that is only becuase of his political aspirations for himself, not the country, as he knows he will need clinton's voters, does not want to alienate them by telling her to get out of the race himself, calculating politician as they all are. he is no different from the rest. the kool-aid his supporters drink turns a new color daily!
What exactly constitutes the politics of personal destruction when it comes to Hillary's campaign against Obama? Questioning his ability as a leader? That's not personal, it's fair game in a contest for the leadership of this country. Is it calling him on his stupid remarks about small town Pennsylvanians? He said it, it's fair fame.
You really have no idea of the politics of personal destruction if you think Hillary has used it. If you want to see the real thing, go back and read about the Republican persecution of Bill Clinton from the time he was elected until the time he left office. This campaign is kindergarten compared to the real politics of personal destruction.
MR ZOGBY: I HAVE NO IDEA HOW MANY DEMOCRATS YOU SAID YOU HAVE TALKLED TO, BUT I HAVE TALKED TO MANY, MANY AND NOT ONE HAS SAID THAT THIS ELECTION SHOULD CLOSE BY SEN. CLINTON GETTING OUT OF THE RACE. THIS IS THE MEDIA TALKING, AS THEY HAVE FROM THE BEGINNING. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS "WHAT ARE THE MEDIA GETTING OUT OF THIS"? IT IS NOT ACCEPTBALE FOR SEN. CLINTON TO DROP OUT, THE RACE IS NOT OVER AND THE REASON YOU AND THE MEDIA CONTINUE PUTTING HER DOWN, IS THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING IN IT FOR YOU. DEMOCRATS, YOU KNOW THAT SEN. CLINTON IS THE "ONE" FOR THIS OFFICE. IF THE MEDIA WOULD ONLY TELL THE TRUTH BEHIND OBAMA'S LIES, IT WOULD NOT BE A CONTEST AT ALL. HE HAS WRITTEN A BOOK ABOUT HIMSELF, AND NOW HE IS CONTRADICTING THOSE THINGS, JUST FOR VOTES. THINK, AMERICAN DEMOCRATS, HE WILL NOT ADMIT TO ANY WRONGDOINGS. REV. WRIGHT FOR ONE.
Read my lips... I'm a democrat, and I say Hillary, bow out!
I'm a Democrat and you can put those lips where the sun don't shine!
Thank you! I agree with you totally.
I am a Democrat and I DO NOT know that "Clinton is the "ONE". She is just one step ahead of McSame.
Actually Obama has handled every controversy better than any other poltician I've ever seen. He hasn't ducked anything. But regardless of what you think about Obama, Zogby is dead on. She can't win, is not the nominee and should drop out. You can blame it on the media, you can blame it on brainwashed Obama supporters, I don't care, that doesn't change the hard reality. She can't win, she should quit. All the others tuff you blathered on about is irrelevant. Get over it. WE rarely get who we want suck it up or go home.
I'm a democrat, and I think Hillary should bow out because she has no real chance of winning without destroying the democratic party.
And for the record, Hillary wrote a book about herself, was paid an $8,000,000 advance which the senate ethics committee advised her not to accept (she did anyway). Then, Hillary specifically changed her story regarding things she said in her book. She lied in her book, and now lies about the lies in her book.
I think you've confused the two senators and their books.
Anyhow, so that you can no longer say "NOT ONE HAS SAID THAT THIS ELECTION SHOULD CLOSE BY SEN. CLINTON GETTING OUT OF THE RACE.", let me say again:
I AM A DEMOCRAT AND I THINK HILLARY SHOULD QUIT BECAUSE SHE IS DESTROYING THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND HAS NO REAL CHANCE OF WINNING WITHOUT OVERTURNING THE WILL OF THE VOTERS AND CAUSING EVEN FURTHER HARM TO THE PARTY.
I think you're getting Hillary's 8 million dollar advance mixed up with Newt Gingrich's huge book advance after the 94 elections. I'm not aware of any Senate ethics rules that prevent a Senator from receiving any amount of advance or of revenues from sales of books they've written.
AND THE VOTERS ARE PRETTY EVENLY SPLIT BETWEEN THE TWO EVEN WITHOUT FL OR MI, SO SHUT UP ALREADY ABOUT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE.
After Pennsylvania Barack Obama only needs 301 delegates to win the nomination! Obama has a 500,000 lead in the popular vote, and he should get a big win in North Carolina. If Obama wins North Carolina by 20% or more then the Super Delegates will choose him and he could have enough delegates to win the nomination by June 3rd. As my father, who was a great football coach, used to say, it is the 4th quarter, and it is time for some offense. Obama can take the football in for a winning TD in North Carolna with a big win. Get out and vote for Barack Obama in North Carolina on May 6th.
VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA AND LETS GET A DEMOCRAT WIN IN NOVEMBER!
Remaining States and Delegates Clinton Wins Out (Generously)
State Unpledged Distribution of Delegates
Delegates Super D's Clinton Obama
Indiana: 72 (5) 44+(3) 28+(2)
Kentucky: 51 (6) 31+(4) 20+(2)
Montana: 16 (6) 10+(3) 6+(3)
N. Clna: 115 (12) 65+(7) 50+(5)
Oregon: 52 (10) 30+(6) 22+(4)
S. Dkta: 15 (2) 8+(1) 7+(1)
W. Vgna: 28 (6) 19+(4) 9+(2)
Guam: 4 (4) 2+(2) 2+(2)
TOTAL: 353 (51) 209+(30) 144+(21)
Add in the current delegate totals
1,334+(263) 1,491+(240) (+134 for Obama)
GRAND TOTAL 1,836 1,896 (+60 for Obama)
Even if Clinton gets ALL remaining Super D's she will gain only 42 points (21D's).
(The formatting and spacing of this probably won't print correctly; all this is intended to say is that even if Clinton wins out generously and takes all of the remaining unpledged superdelegates, she will not surpass Obama)
Disclaimer: those numbers subject to change should Hillary commit to having Diebold's CEO as her vice-presidential running mate. Look for Hillary to win by 104% margins in that case.
Not so fast. North Carolina may be a big surprise...
Uh Huh, Obama is still ahead, he will win NC, even if he didn't it is mathematically impossible for Clinton to win the nomination.
He's got a double digit lead. Now if Hillary can close that gap to 9.3% points I'll be impressed.
The surprise so far is that the Republicans are running attack ads against Obama in North Carolina. That means one of two things is likely to be happening. Either Hillary has enlisted the aid of the republicans, or the republicans are scared to death of running against Obama, so they are trying to help Hillary win the nomination.
The "big surprise" is going to be when Reid, Pelosi, and others step in and tell the super delegates to commit to a candidate, and when they do, they will probably split about 50/50 which will mean certain doom for Clinton's hopes.
Can I get an "Amen!"
I have been a Democrat my whole life and it has been a long life. If Hillary is the nominee I will not vote. I never thought I could feel this way because I was a huge supporter and defender of the Clintons. She is now using the Rove play book and has become one of "them" and I don't mean a Republican. It breaks my heart!
So you like having corrupt Republican administrations?
Corrupt republican (McCain) or corrupt republican in democrat's clothing (Clinton). Is there really that much difference? Do you honestly believe Hillary is going to give a shit about all her platforms if she gets into office? If so, think again.
I'm beginning to believe the reason she won't step down is that she promised Colombia an FTA, and she's terrified of Colombia squealing if she isn't able to close the deal - which would ultimately mean her entire political career was over.
I'm very curious as to why the media pursued the "bitter-gate" bullcrap over the discovery that Hillary's top 3 advisors had worked for a Colombian FTA. Bill Clinton, Mark Penn, and Howard Wolfson all have had their hands in the Colombian FTA cookie jar at one point or another. Talk about corruption!
Actually, I'm not curious about their choice to follow "bitter-gate" instead of a real story. I know exactly why. It's because so many people in this country don't want to hear real issues that will directly impact their lives, they want to be spoon-fed tabloid sensationalism. Welcome to the hard truth behind Obama's "bitter-gate" comments.
Wow. In another Huff post today, the Sen. Chuck Shummer, N.Y., says the U.S. is "not ready" for National Health Care. That article also notes Sen. H. Clinton sits on the Senate Finance Commitee. It does not take too much reading between the lines to understand the message: Either Clinton gets us health care or no one will. They are determined to treat Obama as a Washington outsider and thwart him at every turn. "Jimmy Carter him", i think it must be called in D.C. For the first time it is really obvious how much all the Washington insiders of both parties are threatened by Obama. All depends on Obama's ability to reach over the heads of Congress, appeal to the American people to light a fire under the bums of both parties after he is sworn in. I like what i heard Sen. Barney Frank say on the Maher show this season. "Where will we get the money for health care reform?" Frank; "The same place we got the money for the war in Iraq." Amen.
This points out what I have been saying for months. The president matters, but not as much as the Congress. People need to vote out of office any incumbent who has been in office for more than 6 years, especially if they are on the opposite side of the issue as their president!
What might be an easier way to ensure that congress is periodically flushed out is to push for term limits for congress.
I agree with you that congress needs to be flushed out periodically, but there are too many lobbyists and special interests that will help them to hold onto office as long as they are useful to them. A much better way to do it - although maybe not an easier one - is to create term limits.
Or maybe DC feels threatened by Obama's Anti-American themes!
"Obama's Anti-American themes!"
List them.
Not things other people have said. What HE has said that are Anti-American themes.
Go ahead. Knock yourself out.
Hillary Clinton defines victory in the primary season in exactly the same way that George Bush defines victory in Iraq -- keep changing the goalposts and the definition of what winning "is."
Very true. She's "staying the course"... but of course the course is not matter of course, it's whatever she makes it at any given moment!
At first it's delegates, then it's big states, then it's working class voters, then it's gun toters, catholics, whatever, then it's popular vote (including ones that aren't to be counted).... and it goes on and on...
Did you ever partake in one of those stories where each person adds to the last person's addition to keep the story going? That's what it's like watching Hillary campaign, except she's the only one adding to it....
And she has taken on all of Barack's stances... now that Barack mentioned bitter, she claims everyone has hope.... the sky is opening...
Can't believe a word she says.
A long primary season would be fine if it weren't riddled with twisting, lying, deception, scandal, and tearing the other candidate apart.
How can anyone think they know her. She doesn't even know herself. She just looks up to the ceiling and laughs, and then responds by not responding... the EPITOMY OF A POLITICIAN who is mince meat.
No Obama = no vote from me, unless I can write him in.
From a poor white middle aged woman living in Hillary's NY. So much for her demographics.
the one advantage of a long primary season is that the more I hear of Hillary the less I like her.
Exactly TBS! Clinton is destroying the Dem party and the chances for us to take back the White house. She and her husband are dispicable people. Both Clintons have everything: money and power, but it's still not enough for them. If they were real patriots they would join habitat for humanity and get involved at a grass roots level and say thank you to the American people for all the trust and monies they have received over the years. The truth is they don't want to roll up their sleeves; they loathe blue collars, but pretend otherwise.
DON'T KID YOURSELF. SHE IS A SOCIALIST !!!!!!!
I wish.
Hillary's an ultra conservative right wing republican, who out of sheer political avarice has been masquerading as a democrat. Once a Goldwater Girl always a Goldwater Girl.
It's why she hasn't had any problems cozying up to McCain, FoxNews, Murdoch and Scaife.
The joke's on you democrats. It has been since you all elected Bill and his triangulation strategy which Hillary has continued. Ever wonder why Hillary has voted so much like a hawk and wants to have a nuclear umbrella in the middle east.
During one of the CNN debates that Anderson Cooper hosted Hillary wouldn’t even utter the word liberal.
The Clintons have played the people who affiliate their selves with the democratic party for fools. Dudes wake up it's never been about what's best for the democratic party or America it's always been about what's best for the social climbing, politically expedient Clintons.
Better a socialist for the PEOPLE, than a socialist for the corporations!
I wish! Ha! Hahahahahahahahahaha! Yeah, she's a socialist! Ha! Oh, thanks for that I needed a laugh!
" There is no doubt that Senator Clinton is a talented and an extraordinarily intelligent person. Her tragic flaw is her belief that only she is capable of leading. It is this that has caused her to engage in an effort to demean her opponent and engage in the kind of campaign that she once decried as "the politics of personal destruction."
I don't think she is so smart. She doesn't knowhow to run a campaign or how to hire her handlers. She doesn't know when to stop maligning her opposition and she doesn't know how to be honest or fair. She only cares about herself and winning. She is a very bad person to be consiered for the White House as she is UNFIT FOR ANY PUBLIC OFFICE.
IT IS A BEAUTIFUL THING TO WATCH HER CAMPAIGN IMPLODING. !!!!!!!
What alternate reality rock have you just crawled out of? Her campaign is not imploding.
Let's see marijam,
She fired her campaign manager in February. She had to demote Mark Penn - when she should have fired him outright. She had to fire Ferraro for her racist remarks. She had to censure her own husband about his Bosnia remarks. She has had to loan her own campaign $5,000,000 and still has many unpaid creditors - some of whom are going to collection against her. She was once a shoe-in for the nomination. She has watched leads disintegrate like Pennsylvania where she had over a 20 point lead a month before the primary, and lost over half of that, ending up with barely more than a 9 point win. She pledged to not count FL and MI, and even said on NPR that she didn't think it mattered that she left her name on the ballot in Michigan since the state wouldn't count anyway. Despite all that, she now pretends that she has fought for FL and MI votes to count all along. She was caught lying about Bosnia, Macedonia, Ireland, NAFTA, and her experience in general.
I'd have to say that looks a bit like an implosion to me. In fact I'm curious what part of her campaign you think hasn't imploded? Alternate realities? You apparently don't even understand what reality is.
Here's a little evidence of Hillary's flip-floppery:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C08W-jgyLlA&feature=related
Absolutely not! We still have 8 more states to go and the citizens of those remaining states deserve to have their voices heard and votes counted AND to have a choice of candidates on which to vote. The DNC set up this primary election season and they need to stop being so willy-nilly about and mamby-pamby about the time it is taking to get a nominee. Granted, no one thought a clear front-runner would be in doubt by now, but that is no good reason to do the "chicken little, sky is fallying" routine. Democrats will deal with McCain and his nasties soon enough. This primary season is tough and it is going to take a tough person to straighten out the mess in Washington. The pollster haven't gotten much right this campaign season; lets not accept their "results" yet; my vote is on the remaining citizens who have yet to vote - theirs is the one to watch!
What is that? She can't "win"...she can only be selected now. This has nothing to do with polls. It basically involves addition and subtraction.
Sounds like a Republican enjoying the mess!
The problem is that it really doesn't matter how the people of those last eight states vote. Sen. Clinton isn't going to get 80%+ of the remaining votes and therefore she simply cannot catch up with Sen. Obama. So why should she continue to damage our party and help Sen. McCain's candidacy? I cannot think of one reason that isn't self serving...
Hillary and Bill figure they can scratch and claw their way to another eight years in the White House. Once in, they will promptly forget all the "progressive" promises they've made, return to their DLC roots and be duplicitous as hell. In place of the lies and corruption of the current Administration, we'll have lies and corruption with a different party affiliation. And once again, the American public will be the suckers.
Mr. Zogby, I could not disagree with you more and I believe it is not your place to suggest anyone leave the race. There is an election. People are still voting. Let everyone have their say.
He's suggesting the superdelegates make their decision. He did not 'suggest anyone leave the race.'
And even if he were, it's based on the notion that the race, such as it is, is over. One candidate has an insurmountable mathematic advantage.
Therefore, the only possible alternative outcome involves overturning the results so far. And he's saying that's not going to be a kumbaya moment.
