Senator John McCain today said SEC Chairman Chris Cox should be fired for falling asleep at the wheel as conditions built towards the current meltdown of the nation's financial markets.
Where was Senator McCain (or the rest of the US Senate for that matter) back in 2005 when we launched the "Stop Cox" campaign to oppose the confirmation of a pro-business, anti-regulatory politician as the nation's top financial regulator? (Cox was confirmed with a unanimous vote.)
Cox actually wrote the 1995 law (the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act) that made it harder for investors to take corporate swindlers to court. The law has been blamed for allowing some of the nation's worst financial scandals -- including those at Enron and WorldCom -- to proceed unchecked. Chris Cox should never have been the SEC Chair, so it's no surprise he's been silent as the financial markets implode.
Consumer Watchdog warned of as much three years ago. Click here to watch the video we released back then with Greg Germann, who played Richard Fish on Ally McBeal, playing a jailed executive thankful for Chris Cox's nomination.

I finally heard a good Obama soundbite today, along the lines of, "Why does McCain just want to fire Cox? Why not fire the whole bunch of the trickle-down, do nothing, no oversite Republicans? " A big cheer from the crwods. What the Dems need more than anything is better PR -- they still have not been able to figure out how to get good soundbites, including Pelosi and Reid.
So if we follow the "he hired him" line that means no one could ever be fired?
John McCain was in the Senate 26 years. Although we ARE focusing on the MESS that the last eight years have brought upon us, including John McCain's voting decisions. Regardless of WHO is to blame, and there is plenty to share amongst parties, McCain can't seem to get it. He can't seem to say that he voted with the administration 90% of the time. He voted with the administration on continuing these same policies that got us here and he voted with the administration on the 'new' policies that helped make this mess worse. MAYBE he was trying to be a 'compassionate conservative' when he voted for someone he must have known would not lift a FINGER to intervene in a real way with the Enron et.al. scandals. Maybe he believed himself and these guys when the words "We're sorry and we'll never do it again." were spoken.
First off he was confirmed by unanamous vote. Secondly, it doesn't matter if he hired them, anyone who has ever owned or managed a business and fired someone, usually hired them. Everyone makes mistakes, the key is knowing how to change and not hide behind your mistake.
That all said, I think this is easy lip service for McCain, but what do you expect.
HE WAS THE SAME PLACE HE WAS WHEN HE ESCAPED CLEAN FROM THAT KEATING5 MESS I THINK HIS WIFE'S MONEY BROUGHT HIM OUT OF THAT
Wish there was video of McCain voting for Cox.
There is c-span footage
Here again, each and every statement he makes proves that he's an alien.
McCain is so, out dated, that he appears and act mentally challenged. It's sad that he can't object to the scripts he's reading which are so self-condeming.
He's a Republican and can't deny it. He's another Bush he can't deny it. He want's to find and fight Bin Laden, he want's to fight his own party, he want's to fight the greed, corruption and Gramm...but everyone knows that he can't raise his arms...funny ole man.
There are other ways of surrendering than by raising one's hands.
And what if Todd doesn't give Sarah the permission to allow John to fire Chris?
