Do You Think I'm Stupid?

Mr. Obama said it.... "They must think you are stupid." Stupid to believe that McCain/Palin are "change agents." Change is becoming this campaigns' ping pong ball and we are missing the point. Gandhi said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." Be it. Don't talk about it, don't pontificate about it. Be It. Action word. Demonstrative. Maybe Nike just drafted off that great statesman and made us all "Just do it."

Whatever, the call to action is now. Be it.

Jung said "Only that which changes, remains true." Truth -- unvarnished, well-vetted and precise.

My favorite quote is from The Princess Bride by William Goldman. In it, a street savvy young man hardened by the realities of the world, tells the princess..." Life is pain and anyone who tells you different is selling something."

Life is pain, hard, unfair and yet also achingly beautiful and transformative when we are walking toward truth.

When the Republicans had their convention and there were signs held high with the monikers...."G.I. John and Superwoman" I knew we were in trouble. They were selling a fantasy!

See, we are not stupid, we are humans, we can think and listen and learn. But if what we are taught is corrupt lies and if we are fed the "family truth" then we are not stupid, we are brainwashed. G.I. John and Superwoman take them away from being mortal humans and put them in to the comic book hero status, Teflon coated, impenetrable and as we are seeing today, in the case of Mrs. Palin, not even held accountable in an interview.

We are not stupid, but we are gullible, to fear, lies, misinformation and calculated deceit and that is what we are now up against and where we need to demonstrate the real change.

Mr. Obama said it.... "They must think you are stupid." Stupid to believe that McCain/Palin are "change agents." Change is becoming this campaigns' ping pong ball and we are missing the point. Gandhi ...

Sarah Palin is NOT qualified.(period) The President of the USA is charged with a much bigger job than overseeing the USA. The President of this country needs to have the diplomacy to handle the events and topics of EVERY single country, nation, society and human on this planet. The President of the USA needs to understand the world as a whole, not just the USA and its components. I have heard a lot of people say ... she resonates with me, she gets it " she is just like us"... well frankly... I do not want someone just like us.. I want a leader, someone who is EXTRA-ordinary- who is a citizen of this planet not just a citizen of their own comfort zone. Sarah Palin thinks dinosaurs were on the earth 4000 years ago-She has absolutely NO connection and level of responsibility toward the planet, and I would bet my LIFE if you asked her POINT blank on the spot... WHERE Darfur is, she would have no idea where it is--furthermore... any idea what is happening there--and to my point.. NO idea what to do about it. We need a leader and that leader is Barak Obama.

Jamie I agree with you.
OT but the new republican posters must think we're all stupid.
There is a way to see that all of you JUST joined.

Scared?

Jamie,

You go girl! What this country needs is Real Men for Real Change, ie Obama/Biden!!!!!!!!!!
05:56 PM on 09/14/2008
No Jamie, you are not stupid. WE ARE, for actually taking the time to read what a vacuous uneducated person has to say about the topic. Not long ago another scholar from the Hollywood elite was concerned whether Palin believed dinosaurs roamed the earth four thousand years ago. The fact that the Huffington Post is so popular is more worrisome than Palin’s belief on creationism. I do, however, respect Ms. Huffington’s spunk!

the candidates we're looking at today are certainly not the "agents of change" that Gandi was talking about. Both McCain and O'bama are mediocre at best. Of the four, McCain, O’bama, Biden, and Palin who may become president one day, only McCain and Biden have the experience to lead our country, but McCain favors corporate America and Biden favors the "soup of the day". At least once in my lifetime I’d like to vote for a candidate that I liked, and felt that could/would honestly do the job…..but our selection process leaves us voting for the lessor of two evils. It Generally all about greed.

What's really stupid is when ostensibly intelligent Democrats develop amnesia. I guess we can give a pass to the 18-24 demo who, as a group, tend to be clueless. But what about those of us old enough to remember the 1980s? Anyone who saw Republican conventions of yesteryear should not be expressing surprise at what a powerful lure myth can be nor at how adept they are at using it.

And anyone able to recall Adlai Stevenson should not be mystified by the inert combination of IQ and the American electorate. To paraphrase homer SImpson, we tried electing a professor from Illinois in the movies, and it didn't work.

They don't think we are all stupid, only just enough of us to get them re-elected.

Jamie is your statement "We are not stupid, but we are gullible, to fear, lies,
misinformation and calculated deceit and that is what we are now up against and
where we need to demonstrate the real change." is so accurate.

This election has really helped me personally, at 60 yr old, to wake up, grow up and stand up.

Jaimie, YOU are not stupid... but what scares me is that there are enough stupid voters out there that will make a difference. The Republicans know this and so they will continue to play the game.

Will someone PLEASE create a simple chart that shows the accomplishments of Gov. Palin .vs. other governors and mayors in this country. Who was the town manager in Wasilla? Has anyone talked to him/her to find out just how much Mayor Palin did in that town of 6000 people? To be in charge if the Alaska National Guard - less than 2000 patriotic citizens - how complex can it be to manage that? Eighteen months as governor of Alasaka and its 600,000 people (half of whom live "in the bush" according to one life-long resident of Seward I spoke with).
What's going on people? Are the Republicans the only ones that can use the term "flip-flopper". Did Sarah Palin support the "Bridge to Nowhere" when it was politically convenient and financially beneficial? Did she change her stance (and why?)? Is that flip-flopping. Come on!
To compare this woman to the accomplishments and length of service of Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Diane Fiendstein, Hilary Clinton, Olympia Snow and others is LUDICROUS.

Let's look again to see how absurd it is.

* You couldn't get a job at McDonalds and become district manager after 143 days of experience.
* You couldn't become chief of surgery after 143 days of experience of being a surgeon.
* You couldn't get a job as a teacher and be the superintendent after 143 days of experience.
* You couldn't join the military and become a colonel after 143 days of experience.
* You couldn't get a job as a reporter and become the nightly news anchor after 143 days of experience.

BUT....

* 'From the time Barack Obama was sworn in as a United State Senator, to the time he announced he was forming a Presidential exploratory committee, he logged 143 days of experience in the Senate.
* That's how many days the Senate was actually in session and working.
* After 143 days of work experience, Obama believed he was ready to be Commander In Chief, Leader of the Free World, and fill the shoes of Abraham Lincoln, FDR, JFK and Ronald Reagan. 143 days?

We all have to start somewhere. The senate is a good start, but after 143 days, that's all it is - a start.

AND, strangely, a large sector of the American public seems to feel comfortable with this and campaigning for him.

We wouldn't accept this in our own line of work, yet some are OK with this for the President of the United States of America ?

Come on

Senator Obama sponsored 820 laws in Illinois, authored 152 bills, and co-sponsored 427 more in the U.S. Senate. While in the IL State Senate he authored a bill, which passed 35 to 0, to require that interrogations and confessions be videotaped to ensure confessions were not given under duress, coerced by beating the accused. He also played a major role in the state's first earned-income tax credit to help the working poor and the first ethics and campaign finance law in 25 years which was recognized as "one of the best in the nation on campaign finance disclosure." In the US Senate, he co-authored the new lobbying reform law that requires lawmakers to disclose the names of lobbyists who “bundle” contributions for them. He was an Illinois State Senator for 8 years 1996-2004. Chairman, Health and Human Services Committee. He was a Constitutional Law Professor at the U of Chicago Law School 1993-2004 and was a Civil Rights Attorney - 1992-2004. He's a United States Senator 2004-present Member, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on European Affairs Member, Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Member, Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Member, Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs Obama Education: B.A. Political Science with specialization in international relations- Harvard Law School J.D. Magna cum laude 1988-1991- President, Harvard Law Review -He has accomplished more than most do in a lifetime.

Jamie, where are you getting your information? Has there been a real substantive debate of the issues and I missed it? The TV ads are worthless drivel (both sides). The "debates" were 60 second exchanges that barely scratched the surface. The conventions are obviously slanted versions of reality. MSNBC is in bed with Obama. Fox tilts right. Obama's Blueprint for Change is banal in its vagueness as to how all his great ideas will actually come to fruition. (I judge it not plausible... A fantasy in your lingo...) There is sloganeering all around--both sides. Neil Postman is rolling over in his grave. There is no substantive debate of the issues going on, nor likely will there be. Why? Because we're too busy/lazy to slog through this blizzard of mis-information to find out what is real. CSPAN's Washington Journal is the only thing I've found worth listening to. At least there biased people (and everyone is biased) have a chance to air their points of view without being interrupted.

What do you want in terms of specificity? Tell me when ANY presidential candidate has laid out a more specific plan. I'm betting you can't.

And, there are actually good reasons for candidates leaving out every single specific. First, most of the public does not have the time to wade through detailed plans and people can be fooled by the fine print in such plans. Second, September 2008 is a long time from January 2009. Anyone who promises he or she can commit to incredibly detailed plans based on economic conditions months before inauguration and even longer from the time any legislation could be legitimately be passed, is blowing smoke.

I agree that the ads are not substantive, but are they ever? They're 30 seconds long. But, there are good non-substantive ads and bad ones. The good ones set out general suggestions, that would hopefully get people interested in finding out more about the candidate. The bad ones are those that provide nothing but ad hominem attacks.

I also agree that all of the journalists are biased, but I appreciate that people like Matthews and Olbermann are upfront about their bias. I would rather have Matthews telling me that he feels a connection to a candidate than listen to somebody with an obviously biased view giving me his or her so-called "unbiased" view.

For starters, I want a specific understanding of the logic of why a windfall profit tax would be a good thing for energy independence. Is that such a tall task? If he has determined that it will be a good thing, then he should be able to explain why. Otherwise its just another vacuous populist suggestion designed to win votes, regardless of real life impact. Stating conclusions with no backup arguments is pretty much what you see in Obama's Blueprint for Change. I mean, he could say ANYTHING and get away with it, because no one is demanding specificity...

They don't think YOU are stupid, Jamie. They know that a certain number of the population sees right through their inane, mind numbing, juvenile antics. But what they have been correct in betting on is that there are enough people they can bilk in order to get elected. In a country where majority rules, there will always be a substantial minority who are dissatisfied with the result, no matter what it is. And since people of above average intelligence are, by definition, not members of the majority, people like you are almost guaranteed to be dissatisfied with the decisions your fellow citizens make.
The one thing we can hope for is that young people, less gullible and less easily taken in by the stale old lies of the GOP, will vote alongside us in large numbers. They see the "Bridge Out" sign on the road we're taking and are smart enough to change course.
