The think is, kids need real things for college and some of them are expensive. So, I find that a $25 gift certificate at Staples or Target can go a long way towards bedding, towels, carry-all for bathroom supplies, graphing calculator, electronic dictionary/thesaurus.

My kids appreciate the aluminum water bottles and headlights for reading. Those are each under $25 at an EMS. My older son was really pleased when I put together a sewing kit for him and my niece asked for an iron.

If you are going for frivolous, food and drink gift cards are a good bet.

The emergency kit is not a bad idea but I would go for the standard kit from the drug store.

If a student is going to college nearby, small houseplants can be a cheerful gift that will help to keep the air clean.
