You know, I just spent seven and a half years disagreeing with the administration that has given us an unprecedented military and economic mess. I saw it coming, it came, and in some ways it was worse, and promises to get worse, than I foresaw. I the course of these seven years, I have had my patriotism questioned and demeaned fairly often. I was even put in a book, as one of a hundred people who were hurting America. When I got into this book, my relatives worried that I would get shot by some rightwing nut, even though several of them were and are rightwing nuts themselves (and they carry guns). All this time, though, I considered myself a patriot and a loyal American because I was able to see the destruction that was being wreaked upon the nation, and in particular, upon the middle and working classes, by the Republican liars and war criminals and job outsourcers and health care destroyers and army wreckers and infrastructure ignorers and media whores and agriculture blackmailers (see this month's Vanity
Fair).
So now, Barack Obama tells the truth about conditions as we know them--that the countryside and the small towns are dying in many places in our country, and that the corporatocracy doesn't care enough to do a thing about it. He points out that immigrant-baiting, gay-baiting, gun-baiting, and religious pandering have helped to destroy those towns and that countryside, that those being destroyed have been cynically enlisted by their very own destroyers to provide the votes that help accomplish the destruction. And this is what Senator Hillary Clinton says about it: "Senator Obama's remarks were elitist and out of touch. They are not reflective of the values and beliefs of Americans."
From Senator Clinton's remarks, I infer that to actually see what has gone on in the US in the last 20 years is unAmerican. It doesn't matter who you are, where you were born, what you pay in taxes, what else you might have contributed to the culture, how you vote, who you support. If you don't support fundamentalist religion, job outsourcing, and free access to guns, then you are not even American.
I cannot believe how angry this makes me. I cannot believe that after the last seven and a half years, I can even get this angry. Yes, I know she is pandering to her audience. Yes, I know she will do anything to get elected. Yes, I know that she and Bill Clinton are corrupt to the core, and that I should have never expected anything better of her. But, please, any of you angry white women who still support this craven shill, don't mention it to me. Do me the following favor -- apologize to your children for not stopping the war that HIllary voted for, the war that is going to impoverish them. Then apologize to them for the effects of global warming that are going to make their lives hell. Then apologize to them for the school shooting they may someday see, the one where the kid gets the guns out of his father's gun case, or buys at a gunshow. Apologize to them for the meaningless wars they are going to fight and pay for. Then tell them that "American values" killed their hopes and maybe killed them. And ask them if they think it's going to be worth it.

a woman like yourself who hates another woman has real misogynist issues, like why do you really hate your mother?
This is what makes me angry at Hillary supporters. If you hate another woman you must be a misogynist. Is there no way that a woman can hate another woman? Does that mean you must hate your mother? This kind of name calling is what turns people off. As if a woman can not disagree with Hillary no matter what she says or does without being called a name. This kind of attitude does nothing to help.
hillary has done nothing to deserve being hated especially by women yet countless women do hate her including yourself and jane....ha te hitler not hillary... .
Name calling? Annie Oakley? If she called him Tupac she'd be run out of the country. So don't even....
I'm another woman and I don't hate Hillary, but she does disgust me and I love my mother. Anyone who says that you hate another female because you dislike the things the female does, is ignorant. That is like saying all women voting against Hillary are women haters. There are a lot of women not voting for Hillary because of what she does. If people would stop taking Obama's statements out of context, we could move on to the real issues.
Hillary's a woman. Could have fooled me. Do you know this for sure?
Queen Elizabeth the First was a powerful woman. But not a feminist. She fully supported the subjugation of all women outside herself. Just because a woman is in a position of power or seeks to be in a position of power does not make her a feminist. Nor does it mean she is a supporter of women and the causes women aspire to promote. Failure of women to chastise or be allowed to chastise another woman because she is a women, negates the very purpose of feminism.
Thanks for the dime-store psychology, Okie. It's so cool, too, how you prescribe the limits of what women are allowed to feel about other people based on their gender!
I've often wondered what would the Democratic Leadership (Dean, Clinton, Palosi, Reed, etc) be saying if the roles were reversed between Barack and Hillary. If she had won more states, had more pledged delegates, had a higher popular vote count, and leading in every poll.... I venture to guess that the "party" would have long ago insisted, no demanded that Barack Obama get out of the damn race and stop destroying the party. I would appreciate the thoughts of others on this matter.
Barack would have been forced out by Feb 5 if Hillary had secured her nomination the Media/Punditry crowned her with 6 months earlier.
You can't expect sense out of these people, sense left the building when Sen. Obama won the Democratic nomination in February and it took the MSM until April to notice (Obama = "that uppity Black guy" for you Media folk).
You have to understand though, Pundits need horseraces, and this is the only "horserace" around right now, even if it only exists in Hillary's & their minds. They are understandably slow to eliminate their biggest story of the moment (the Obama - McCain race really won't heat up ratings until mid-September).
Well the latest AP national poll shows HIllary BEATING McCain but Obama LOSING to McCain.
The only reason you think Hillary is destroying the party is because she's going after your guy Obama - the fact that Obama is also going after Hillary doesn't matter? Hmm...he calls her Annie Oakley, his supporters call her a monster, a fucking whore, the devil etc etc and this isn't destroying the party?
Half of Democrats support Hillary. It's not her fault half the party likes her more than Obama. It's up to Obama to convince them he's the better candidate. If he cannot do this it's his own damn fault and stop blaming Hillary.
Jane, I hope you can take a moment to visit my own opinion site as I think we have a lot in common.

About the only thing we differ on is gun control, liberal though I am I do not support gun control.
People seem to have a general idea that the right to bear arms is so we can shoot at targets or go hunting...
Our fore fathers wrote a wonderful document called the Constitution. Contrary to what many seem to think it does not grant rights to anyone. It's purpose is to serve as a limitation on the powers of government. The 2nd Amendment provides us with a means to defend ourselves against a government gone mad. the "insurrectionary theory".
Among the first steps taken by any would-be tyrant is to disarm his subjects.
Sadly, though I am not the survivalist type, Bush's actions have made me consider buying some guns and a stock of ammo myself.
People who wish to disarm us often site public safety as a reason but it is flimsy at best because people who intend to do harm will always find a way. A gun is just a piece of metal with no mind of it's own. If deaths caused by a piece of metal were really cause for control we would not be allowed to drive cars.
Work on the education of children so they don't grow to become killers. ( Like LiL' Bush )
And what's the deal these guys, and gal, individually, SPENDING half a billion dollars, on job that only pays a quarter million a year? Where does all the money go? The way of time, I guess....
It is the fringe benefits.. ..! And the fact that for all but the richest, the money is not theirs anyway. It comes from contributions. Some of those from "special interests" who will make sure they are well taken care of during and after their terms in office.
d on and on. All paid for.
...and the fees they can command speaking once out of office. Much like a big name athlete can often make as much or more on product endorsements as on the "field", a former President can make many many millions just doing speaking engagements in his retirement. Write a book....ma ke a million.
While in the oval office, they can squirrel away the entire pay check. They get the best government housing there is, meals, servants, a pool, luxury transportation any where in the world...an
Then look at the retirement
Most important to many is the shear power that comes with the office !
If anyone is the elistest here, we all know it's the Clinton's and the Bush's, and everyone in that little clique that has no idea what it's like to make half in payy that pay in rent. And after just revealing that she and Billy make 109 mil in the last 8 years. 7, sorry. Nice chunk of change. And now they seek to deter another from their membership. We need to catch Barrak while he is still young enough, and poor enough(?), to still believe in what he is saying, and believes we can actually do something. Sitting on our asses has gotten us nowhere. And this planet, and all that in there is, will die, if we don't do something. It's time we took our country back, and made it into what we wanted long ago.
Hillary and Bill are corrupt to the core!!???
Come on---they are nice people with the American people truely at heart.
I, too, predicted all the Bush administration would do.
And I also predicted the World Trade Center buildings would come tumbling down after they got hit.
But I can also predict that Hillary would do the best job in the White House.
And I can also predict, that if Obama wins, we will be hearing about race ad nauseum for the next four years.
Remember how the cameras captured the Black responce to the OJ verdict across America's cafeterias? We are going to see more of that. A lot more of that if Obama wins.
I like you, Maureen!!!!!
Nice people who did a ton of deregulation to help big business and hurt American individuals. NAFTA was such a great thing the Clinton administration did for us, and now Columbia? They are both so power hungry that they will bring down the Democratic party if they can't win. I used to have respect for them until I started studying the reality of that administration and what happened. They were no more uniters than Bush, that is why the Republicans took over both houses his second term. It is why the Republicans hate him as much as we hate Bush and why many Democrats feel the same. It's one thing to think they can win when people disagree with them, but another to think it will happen with that much pure hatred.
Ever think that the Democratic party needs a takedown?
Did you lose your job as a direct result of NAFTA? Do you know anyone who did? Or are you parroting more of the sewage spill from DailyKook?
MaureenSharkey said, "Remember how the cameras captured the Black responce (sic) to the OJ verdict across America's cafeterias? We are going to see more of that. A lot more of that if Obama wins."
Let me get this straight. You are comparing a jury finding OJ innocent of a crime he probably committed, to Obamma winning the Presidential election? Is that right?
What is it we're going to see more of? Happy black people in cafeterias? What a horrific sight that must be for you.
When Obamma made his comment about bitter people clinging to wedge issues to express their anger, it's people who write and say things like you've just written who prove him correct. For what ever reason, you are so bitter that you spew something like this and probably consider it a logical and reasonable thought.
All I see is poison. Hatred has poisoned you Maureen and I hope you recover.
I would love to see blacks dancing in the streets because Obama won the election. Though I doubt I'll see it live as I will be joining them!
"nice people with the American people truely at heart" would not have campaigned on a platform of opposition to NAFTA, and then--almost immediately after taking office--rammed it throught to please their corporate pals and betray the working people.
Hillary is working hard to rile up racial animosity, and ---from your posting---I can see that she is succeeding. What does an Obama victory have to do with OJ's acquittal, except in the minds of the closet bigots? Hillary is trying to get them to come out of their closet, and it is easy to see it happening right here on HUFFPOST.
If Barack Obama is interested in actually being President -- as opposed to impressing a bunch of rich Californians and left-wing bloggers like Ms. Smiley -- the road to the White House does not include talk about people "clinging" to their religion or anti-trade sentiment. Obama cannot spend time parading in front of a bunch of church pews with Rev Wright -- or blasting trade agreeements, for that matter -- and then talk about people "clinging" to their religion and their anti-trade views. It smacks of Marx's "religion as opiate of the masses", which is only good if you plan to lead a coalition of English professors to your victory. And it makes him sound like a condescending fraud. It was a dumb dumb dumb remark, and it will haunt him.
No it wasn't, and no it won't.
It was dumb remark only to those who have a shallow short sighted view of what was said and lack the understanding of what he meant. Hilary then pounced upon that lack of understanding of nuanced words and capitalized by rephrasing it in a truly condescending way while aiming at those who don't look to the meaning of what has been said. The 30 second commercial on TV loving crowd. You know those who watch the Superbowl so they can be blown away by the ads.
Your remark concerning the supposed Marx's quote demonstrates that you don't understand that either. You are viewing "religion as opiate of the masses", (which by the way you misquoted therefore, no need for the quotation marks) demonstrates a lack of knowledge concerning the London in which Marx was living, and the societal view of opiates at the time of his writing the remark. It is a common misunderstanding that many make who live in the era of "The War on Drugs." When Marx wrote the words you misquoted opiates were considered effective and comforting drugs to combat the ills many were afflicted with, and so his equating religion and opiates was meant to connect the two as slight but effective tools to deal with the ills of the 'masses' living in a sick society and those living with personal illnesses.
Must be one of the English professors in Obama's coalition.
So Marx was saying both religion and drugs are good? The hell he was.
Marx talked about a "soullesss sickness" in the same sentence, or used similar words. You are flatly wrong about what he was saying. He was condemning religion.
Dear Jane : Try as you will, Everyone in this nation isn't treating this election as an episode of American Idol. You and your cohort Shrum can try to jam Senator Barrack Hussein Obama down the public"s throats. But there are still people who can think for themselves. I used to respect Chris Dodd and the Govenor of New Mexico. But you and other like media people are doing a disservice to America. I am a proud Black man. But first I'm an American. Just maybe ,just maybe,America is willing to try some Estrogen as opposed to all that Testostrone that has us flailing about. Maybe it's time to really let women show that they've got immesurable skills that this great nation can put to usefor the betterment of us all. Just maybe society would find new heights of Real Character and solutions as oppsosed to hoping.
Yea, you're a black man like I'm the King of England!!!
Well, Well NYRalf- When was your coronation? It seems that what I stated is what I am. And your lordship, I'm from the great state of Texas. Born and bred. I am a proud Black American and registered Democrat. And used to voting. "This ain't my first rodeo" There are quite a number of Blacks who don't see this Ophrah Visage as another W.E.B. Du Bois.
There are certainly women of 'Real Character' showing their 'immeasurable skills' in politics. But none of them are running for President.
I have nothing against white women about 60. Matter of fact, I am one. I don't think that is a good enough reason to vote for Hillary. Shouldn't we, by now get past gender, estrogen, testosterone, red, yellow, black or white, religion or none, a name...... one that sounds American (Irish is always good, something that starts with Mc) or one that sounds funny. Should how someone looks matter, or their height, weight, etc. What are we.......c hildren???
.......Oba ma/Biden.
In fact, Hillary has proved that she has LOTS of testosterone. She has proved she is not afraid of your children nor mine to go to an unnecessary war. She has voted for the Iraq war; voted for the Kyl-Lieberman amendment, putting us another step towards a war with Iran, voted for the cluster bombs, cheered as Bush proclaimed in his State of Delusion Address that "We got Al Qaeda on the run".
We don't need more of that kind of testosterone. We need someone with a brain and real concern about our people and our country...
Dear jwhite: You've just stated that you are proud, black and American. Glad to hear it. How does the rest of your response relate to the article, other than to illustrate the bitter nature of your own sentiments? To respond directly to what you've said - I, too, appreciate when barriers are broken down. It would be absolutely fantastic to see a female president in the not too distant future. One with moral character. One with integrity. I assume "estrogen" will automatically come with the package - but I don't intend on making that my reason for voting. The right female leader will emerge some day - and I look forward to being inspired by her movement to continue honorably building on America's rich history.
On a side note, I'm entirely off-put by the hate filled way in which some choose to use Obama's middle name. The name itself is nothing to be ashamed of - but you seem to use it as a child on the playground pokes fun at another in a mocking voice - and that's incredibly disrespectful. Some would call it biggoted. Was that your intent, jwhite?
Here, here! It's about time I found another black person with my views. I feel trapped in PA!
Go Jane ...GO! I am with you 1000% on this. I too have just not been able to get this outrage out of my mind. It is a page straight out of the Rove playbook. Take a candidate's strength and by distortion and lies turn it into its opposite and a weakness. Why in the world would we want the Hillary equivalent to Bush and Company for 8 more years? Do any of her supporters still not see that the only reason she is in this still is to deny it to Obama in 2008 so that she can run again in 2012?
Maybe this country deserves no better. Don't nations get the leaders they deserve? Or maybe, maybe people will begin to refuse to be manipulated in this way, talked down to, demeaned by this F...ing Harlot and shill for everything that is wrong with corporate America and with inside the Beltway. She even has Chaney's "So?" down pat when asked when she last went to church. What a phony! What a fraud! What a liar! Is it possible that I have come to detest her more than I do Bush, because she pretends to be on "our" side?
How do you still have respect for the election process? The election has turned into making people think that nothing is really something. I just have a problem with anyone wanting to win something this bad. It is called "winning by hook or crook". Obama's statement is bringing out all of the freaks. Whoo!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!! !!SCAREY. What I keep trying to reconcile in my mind is how Hillary is trying to convince the Superdelegates that she is more electable. There is much more stuff to destroy her with. Most of the stuff being used against Obama has a core reason.
Jane,
Please don't tell me you've fallen for Al Gore's global warming fable too.
Sure. We need to be prudent about our way of going, so as not to harm our neighbors. That, is a given.
And I digress, but for example, the Nature Conservancy should use the $101,000,000 they received (in 2006) in government welfare to “clean up” barrel pits, fix potties in federally owned parks, and teach people how to “use their own so as not to injure their neighbor."
Some facts on global warming.
a) Global warming has past. We're now into global cooling. It's cyclical.
b) Getting our children to tug on Mommy and Daddy's heart strings to "save polar bears and stop the climate from changing," is candy shop ploy "global warming flat earth faithfuls" use to recruit thousands of new believers into their Al Gore led religion.
c) Policies and treaties are being breathlessly created to take America’s agricultural (and other resource) acreage out of production. This puts us dangerously closer to relying on un-friendly nations (for our food, fiber and fuel). No one is asking "why?"
d) There needs to be an all out open debate on climate change before one single solitary policy or treaty is made, or species listed as endangered.
e) This world class Ponzi scheme is no laughing matter; except behind closed doors by those who are lined up to make a killing off our stupidity.
f) Weather or not...it happens.
The majority of climate scientists agree that global warming is primarily caused by human activities such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation. The conclusion that global warming is mainly caused by human activity and will continue if greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced has been endorsed by at least 30 scientific societies and academies of science, including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Joint Science Academies of the major industrialized and developing nations explicitly use the word "consensus" when referring to this conclusion.

indie17,
Wikipedia isn't a science journal. Anyone may post whatever there.
Following is some information I found. Please study these. None of these scientists are swayed by "pay offs," so their information comes via documented findings of fact.
I've turned this thing inside out, then stood afar and looked at the entire picture.
If Mr. Gore's arguement is solid, he should seize opportunity to debate and defend it.
Why does he refuse to do so?
I don't have a dog in this fight, other than the fact that I like to eat. Probably you like food too. Why all three of candidates for president and Gore would pass America on the opportunity to be as self reliant as is possible, is beyond me.
At the rate they and our present administration is running, the new dictatorship will ration - probably tainted food - from countries without America's standards -at many times the cost.
Takeover 101? Remove a country's ability to feed itself.

Look. It's 2008. Being a global warming denier just exposes you as an Earth-is-flat, Darwin-was-wrong, Bush-loving dweeb. The nations most respected scientific body, the National Academy of Sciences, has called the work of the IPCC climate experts fundamentally sound. An occasional blip here and there does nothing to affect the unmistakeable long-term trend towards a hotter planet. And the evidence that it is human-caused is overwhelming. Go to Rush Limbaugh's site if you want to socialize with morons.
What Obama said was absolutely correct! Many of the working (or out of work) poor really do "cling to religion," worry that the gummint will take away their guns, find immigrants to be a major threat, believe there's some great ethnic underground cesspool full of welfare mothers who are sucking their money down the drain, and worry that gay marriage will somehow infiltrate their own families and destroy their relationships. (I, for one, was thrilled to find that gay marriage is the reason for the occasional tensions between me and my husband!)
Unfortunately, class, culture, and education are often denigrated and called "elite" by those unable or unwilling to achieve those goals. Anyone who has worked in a factory has probaby heard about the young guy with the college education who's not worth a damn compared to those who came up the hard way. This is understandable, but the only reason the mainstream culture would cater to this notion that it's somehow better to be uneducated, to lack social graces, and to speak poorly is that it serves the interests of the truly elite to keep the masses in the dark. Bush's "haves and have mores" come to mind here. The concept of "gays, guns, and god" has served them well.
Jane Smiley, as usual, has articulated my own beliefs. Anyone here who has not read her perfectly wonderful books should do so as soon as possible. Ah, yes, but reading is so... oh... I don't know... elitist!
The troubling thing to me is that all this talk about Obama being "elitist" and not really being in touch with the "ordinary people" is dangerously close to them saying that Obama somehow is reaching "above his station" which is a PC way of calling him "uppity."
Now, nobody would dare actually call him "uppity" because that would be admitting that they don't think a black man, even this intelligent, charismatic, well-spoken man, should aspire to the highest office in the land.
Oddly, although it is difficult to find dirt in this candidate's past, or to point to anything more than his telling the truth, even though some resent being told the truth, still they dig.
Why not just vote for whoever you want to vote for, making no excuses, flinging no dirt at whoever you didn't vote for?
Why is it necessary to destroy a candidate, even if what is being used to destroy him/her is not true, but just makes you feel better about your choice.
If you're not bitter about the last eight years, you're among the minority.
People do cling closer to their religion when they feel abandoned.
People do treasure their right to bear arms when they feel threatened.
Is saying out loud that you are bitter, or angry, or disappointed so wrong?
Are you perfectly content with where the country is now?
Obama is attempting, with your help, to take a different approach.
Isn't that a good thing?
Clearly lost in the wilderness of a metropolitan campus.
Thank you, Jane, for stating feelings that I am feeling in abundance. I am a 71 year old white woman and feeling so angry today. I want a change for our country desperately and yet I find myself having such trouble when I think that I may have to vote for Mrs. Clinton in order to vote Dem. this fall.
She has disappointed me over and over with the lying and the ridiculousness of her attacks on Mr. Obama.
Please, Hillary, stop this stupidity and give the Democrats a chance to win this fall.
It amazes me to read some of the comments from HC supporters as they try deserately to spin Obama's comments to benefit Hillary. I was a long time supporter of B&H Clinton, until they showed me and the world their true colors. The idea that America owes the Clinton's the Presidency is crazy as hell. If the Clinton's are allowed to steal this nomination, it will set the Democratic Party as well as Race Relations in this country back 100 years. For the Repubs this is a God send, and like many of you I think McBushCain will be the next President of these Not United States.... .....
Actually, the Clintons have showed their true colors all along; we loyal Dems. just excused it during WJC's two terms because we liked most of his policies as well as the booming economy. The right wing hated Bill and demonized Hilary, but we knew that there really was then, and still actually is, a "vast right wing conspiracy," so we defended Bilary and let a lot of questionable actions slide. Like obsfucation of their finances, downright lies, and Bill getting his knob shined in the Oval Office. Putting us through a sham inpeachment and largely responsible for a criminally vile and stupid GWB winning (?) 2000 as the "moral candidate. "
So as WJC's second term was coming to an end, whenever we heard that cracking, drawling, used-car salesman voice coming over the airwaves, we muted the volume because we were thoroughly sick of it by that point.
Now we have to listen to it again, along with the pandering phony-baloney, hauty voice of his wife, and neither is appealing in 2008. Why? Because the refreshing intelligence and forthrightness of BHO is such an utterly stark contrast.
Leveling with the electorate? What a concept!
I've always thought that Hillary's job is to get McCain elected
PoRo-I agree with you and the SD's better take note of that. If this nomination is given to Hillary, that would mean that it was stolen from Obama. I think that the Democratic party will never be the same. And then you will have to wonder how Hillary will be able to conduct a presidency with all of that turmoil.
What makes me angriest about this latest smear is that, on top of the other race baiting dreck spewed in the Hillbillys' pitches to the knuckledragging fringe, it smacks of calling Obama an "uppity N".
But, apparently sensitive to this potential criticism, Camp Clinton is now aiming for those fancying themselves a cut above the neanderthal with a claim that Obama is "elitist" in the sense of "Gore and Kerry" - whatever that is supposed to mean.
It means they lost because the rest of America knew they didn't have any bawls!
Another interesting thing going on is all of these pundents, supposedly experts, getting on tv and talking as if they know everything. These are just people who have views like everyone else. Their views are no more real than anyone elses. They just want you to believe they know it all. People must think for themselves. Nobody and I mean nobody really knows how those Pennsylvania voters are going to vote. Let Hillary tell it, all of the voters in PA are upset, but let's give PA voters credit for having more sense than to let these political maneuvers decide who they will vote for. Right now, to me, Hillary is acting like a possessed devel who just has to win and eventually she will trip herself up. She now, is acting elitest to the PA voters by thinking that she can manipulate them into acting on what she is saying, knowing that Hillary doesn't even believe what she is saying, but she has to win. So she will do anything to win. I would never vote for her.
"From Senator Clinton's remarks, I infer that to actually see what has gone on in the US in the last 20 years is unAmerican ."
I wish I'd noticed Ms. Smiley's post earlier. Wow, is she mad! And with good reason. When we ask if the Clinton campaign can get any more cynical, they respond with Yes We Can.
