What Now?

It's pretty evident that Obama is caught between rock and a hard place, but the trap is one he made for himself, and those of us on the left who hoped that he would not make this trap now have to ask ourselves some very difficult questions. The first of these is this -- if we step up to the plate and support him now with both our money and our feet, what will we get in return? If the last six months are any indication, the answer is, "Nothing." I have to admit that I've watched the administration with increasing dismay. Although I sent Obama as much in the way of campaign contributions as I was allowed to by law, and then was dunned again after the inauguration for more (in this I am like most of my liberal friends), Obama seemed neither to share our analysis of what was wrong with the Bush administration nor to share our views on who, exactly, was the right sort of official to correct Bush's crimes and misdemeanors. While his choices on the environment have been pretty good, he has catered to Wall Street at every turn, and Wall Street has responded by going back to business as usual as quickly as possible, clearly unintimidated by their friends Summers and Geithner. Our tax dollars have disappeared into the maw of fat bankers' salaries and rising equity while we, the taxpayers are still stuck with high principal, tight loans, high fees, and skittish lenders. Yup, Naomi Klein was right -- a crisis is just another way for the financial class to soak the poor.

Health care has been the real test, and if his administration caves to Republican intimidation and lies and foregoes the public option in the health care bill, Obama is failing that test. If there is no public option and no way of lowering the price of drugs -- if Obama is determined to make back room deals with the same old corporate shills--then what have I gotten for my campaign contribution? It's not nothing, it's worse than nothing, because if the man who promised hope does the same old thing, then that is the end of hope.

It was always pretty clear to me that the right wing was not ever in a million years going to play the bipartisan game, and I couldn't figure out why Obama thought they might. At first I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt -- that he knew he had to appear to extend the hand across the aisle so that he could then do the right thing with a clear conscience (and good PR). But then it became evident that he really does care more about the Republicans across the aisle than the left side of his own party, and this is really peculiar, because the more that he has attempted to woo those Republicans, the more hysterical they've become. They think he's weak, and they think they're winning. If he foregoes the public option, they have won. Simple as that, and we on the left can and must come to the conclusion that he used us and our money, but never intended to listen to us or give us a G-D thing. Believe me, even if and when he gives up the public option, no Republican is going to extend the hand of fellowship to Obama, no matter what. As far as I can tell, Obama does not understand how Republicans work. Here is how they work -- if you are stronger than they are, they arm themselves and scream that they are being victimized, and if they are stronger than you, they arm themselves and scream about what a pussy you are. In other words, they work like spouse abusers work. To try and work with them is crazy, and Obama's only hope for making something of his promises and his presidency would have been to work around them. But he didn't.

There is a real danger now that some right wing nut is going to commit an enormous and terrifying crime. Obama has never understood that what he represents is, in and of itself, repellent to some Americans. There are people out there who believe he's the Anti-Christ and if there's one thing Saddam Hussein learned, it's that you can't prove a negative. But Obama courted the Republicans from the beginning and gave us the cold shoulder. Now Move On is asking me for money again, and I expect Joe Biden will appear in my mailbox any day now.

If I pony up, what will I get? More Geithner. More Summers. No public option. Obama needs to wake up before he has no friends at all. Max Baucus is not his friend. Chuck Grassley is not his friend. If Obama wants me for a friend, he's going to have to give me something for my little contribution and my vote, and my support. He's going to have to come clean about the abuses of power committed by the Bush administration and repudiate them. He's going to have to repudiate the drug companies and give them back their money. He's going to have to pressure the banks to revamp their lending policies and their fees, and he's going to have to regulate them. And he's going to have to stand up to the Senate Finance Committee and give us the sort of health insurance that the Senate Finance Committee enjoys. The left could do again for Obama what they did last year -- back him up. But he's jilted us since then, so what hope is there?

If you are concerned about receiving "real" health care reform in this country, please take the time to watch a video on our current system. The video was created by Oregon physicians who are advocating for the single-payer option. The video is very informative and helped me to gain a better understanding of various aspect of health care, as we know now it.

https://www.madashelldoctorstour.com/Mad_as_Hell_Video.html

These Oregon physicians are in the process of organizing a caravan designed to inform the public about the benefits of the single-payer option. At last count they will be stopping in approximately 23 states, on their way to demonstrate in Washington. They need volunteers and our support. Please spread the word.

All I can say is amen. However here's the hard question. When it becomes 2012 what do we do? Surely the Republicans will not have changed any for the better. And the likelihood of any third party candidate garnering enough support is highly unlikely.

I'm asking the same question. Who do we support? The chances of anyone running against Obama are unlikely -- unless the public has figured it out and is that disgusted that maybe something could happen.

All I can say is this article hits hard. And the "abuser" anology I read in another piece on Common Dreams this morning.

Bravo, Jane Smiley !!! Democracy Now alerted us to the people Obama was choosing for his campaign advisors, which was a window into, what Obama was likely to do in office. They were, all, "plutocrats." I voted for Nader, even though, I knew he wouldn't get enough votes; because we have to recognize that we don't have a "democratic" party. We have two "Republican" parties.

This is the main fact, that people need to understand.

Obama has done some environmental good, but he has opened precious wilderness to logging.

Great article Jane, I feel exactly the same as you. I am so disappointed in Mr President. This is just making me sick. I wish that we could get him a copy of this article.
Thanks for the post

Wow. You liberals are amazing. "If it's one thing Saddam Hussein proved is that you can't prove a negative?!?!" Are you serious? Saddam went out of his way to make us believe he had WMD's. He even said it!
The failings of the Bush Administration (fiscally) were because of his cowtowing to the liberals, and not for his conservative ideals. Think about it...

WOW the kkk, nonstop war with clear contempt for war profiteering laws, abortion clinic bombings, the ability to tie even the most basic of needs to a spot on the exchange ticker, and many more plus the retreads have ideals!! who knew??

Jane Smiley, those are hard words to read. I imagine they were much harder to write.

And they had the resounding ring of truth.

President Obama will find that the very best regard he can ever hope to get from the Right is respect. They'll NEVER like him. They'll NEVER vote for him. They'll NEVER accept that a person like him, no matter how smart, attractive, and charming, is President.

But I guarantee they'll respect him for standing up for what he believes in. For standing up to them.

Right now they detest all he stands for, AND they disrespect him for caving.

Xihuitl: Actually it is not. Check Gallup for party and ideological identifications. & catesby: Healthcare is all or nothing is it? no step by step changes on issues? Really I thought there were several energy bills in the past few years? The Republicans passed that idiotic prescription drug bill a dew years back too? Plus the insuring of Children this year....wow that looks like step by step changes on major issues....wow so....I guess that if the Obama administration gets the majority of its healthcare demands then it can make improvements as it see's fit as the economy improves (public option included especially as Robert Gibbs confermed today that nothing had changed & they were still behind it)

The CO-OPS are total BS, by the way.

Wow...they will ALLOW you to group yourself with others to buy insurance as slightly less gouging rates.

Think about it for a minute.

When you buy auto insurance, it doesn't matter who you join with, your rate is based on your risk vs. their entire pool of customers.

The risk is the same for health insurers. It doesn't matter who or how many people you JOIN with...their risk is still you vs. their entire pool of customers.

It's a shell game.

You would NEVER accept the idea that how your co-worker drives would affect your auto insurance rate....

WHY do we accept this scam in health insurance?
10:57 AM on 08/18/2009
You are correct...it is a scam..the insurance companies will get wealther while Americans suffer.

Well said! We need more outlets than just Hp to bring these issues to light however.
When we get a truly truthful media outlet, the world will change...greed will keep that at bay though.

Having worked in the energy industry for over two decades now, i'm still amused that people play right and left. My company contributes roughly equal to all canidates. Most senior staffers in my office don't vote, and we laugh at our customers ( behind their backs ) that take a stand, right or left. Many golf outings with both sides, and I have never seen conflict between pro-politicos, outside of who counts the money. I remember back in the eighties, as the social implications of the "web" were becoming apparent, my mentor said many times, that there would be too many people "at the table". Now, he says ( in retirement ), the opposite has happened. People are pinned down with it. They spew their ideology, right or left, then go to bed. I learned to bury my concience many years ago. I've paid two college educations in cash, with my youngest still to go, have enjoyed the best in what life has to offer, and will retire at 55, maybe 52, with the good fortune of what this economy lays at my feet. I feel bad sometimes, for Americans, then remind myself of what this same mentor also said many times: " You never see a fish mounted on the wall with its mouth SHUT. "

Well, since your conscience is "dead", why don't you enlighten the folks on this board about what a Frac job does to the water table? No, how about how much salt water from oil/gas wells (toxic on a good day) gets dumped back into our rivers? NO, why don't you let follks know how much pollution is caused by our "green" energy companies? I work for one too....

Does Jane Smiley sincerely, with a straight face, think that Hillary would have behaved "to the left of" Obama? Exactly what candidate, and what policies, does Smiley think could win the
White House for the Dems, if Obama's repudiated by the left? What now, indeed.
12:27 AM on 08/18/2009
None, that is why Obama knows he can take us for granted.

This is the middle of the debate , not the end.Do you usually give up this easily?
11:26 AM on 08/18/2009
I like bo the job he's doing, trying to do, BUT smiley is right !! In the action movies they say "we dont negotiaye with terrorists" !! If someone or group of someones(repugs) wrong you tell them in capital letters "YOU ARE WRONG" !! To bow down to blue dog(dem or repug whichever suits them at the moment) or repug pressure is WRONG and a sell out. Many people claim the way it works is this first bill will be a miserable failure no matter but it is a platform from which to build, ok thats accepting defeat in the short term but......We voted based on a promise of no cave-ins!!!

If they pass a health care reform bill without a public option, what exactly is in the bill that will help either bring down the costs of health care or help those without insurance get it?

I voted for Nader because I knew no matter what Obama's intentions were, he would have to start running for re-election on Jan. 21, 2009.

Moreover, I never blamed Nader for Florida; I blamed Gore for failing to mention (among many other ideas) even the basic progressive idea of raising the minimum wage. If he actually did talk about it, maybe it wouldn't have mattered what happened in Florida.

It still doesn't cross the Democrats' mind that if you help people, they will vote for you. It doesn't even cross Obama's intellegent mind for some odd reason. Why else does he pay ANY attention to Grassley?

Grassley is a useful tool.He exposes the lack of sincerity of the Republicans. The American people are slow to notice but it will have an affect. They realize the only hope is from the Dems and will eventually demand what Obama wanted to give them in t he first place.
Sad but sometimes the American people don't know what is good for them.As more loose jobs and health care , they will become more serious and less political about this issue. They will demand it.
And Obama will deliver because it is the mandate of the people.

So get out their and demand reform.People will join you.

I like how people who want progress are being labled as pseudo-progressives. The people who sit quietly in the hopes of not offending the GOP so, fingers crossed, maybe they will let us pass some legislation are the real progressives, no doubt.

And somehow, sitting by quietly and patiently and hoping things work out is considered to be supporting the president.

If Obama truly wants to implement a progressive agenda, then he NEEDS progressives to stand up and demand action on progressive issues.

Otherwise, every day we sit and wait and hope, the debate and the policies move further and further to the right.

So, somehow there are people here who think that demanding progress is hurting Obama...I don't get it?

Being quiet helps only the GOP. If no one demands a public option, it will be sacrified at the alter of compromise.

Progressives should speak their mind. Obama has said he wants people to hold him to account.

I will take him at his word on that.
