Eli Zabar For President? Obama for America?

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

A few weeks ago I went into the gourmet food store Eli's Manhattan and bought what I imagined were the most expensive pigs in blankets in the whole world -- Eli Zabar's own signature ones at $.99 apiece. That was until last night when I went to an Obama for President fundraiser and the only refreshment I was offered was a single pig in a single blanket. Let's call that the four-figure pig!

Well, you may argue, there is no comparison. At an Obama fundraiser you get to rub shoulders with the great man himself not to mention other people as worthy as yourself -- your peers. True, but you get to do that when you shop at Eli's too. At an Obama fundraiser you get a vision for America. Well, Eli has a vision for America too and it is delicious food at elevated prices. An army marches on its stomach and so do I.

So why should we vote for Obama? For me the most compelling reason is because he is the only candidate who has a prayer of restoring any dignity and moral authority to America's now atrocious reputation overseas. I believe our future depends on that. However, I'd still rather have Eli Zabar cook my dinner. Maybe Eli could overhaul the Presidential kitchens, ingredients and menus but in the meantime, couldn't he just cater Obama's fundraisers?
