Happy Mother's Day! This morning, as I gather my 'stuff' (camera, gift for mom, healthy snacks) to head off into the sunrise to visit my 94 year-young mother, I am reminded of this video that I shot 2 short years ago. Not much has changed. My mother still sits in her apartment, doing her solo act. She did finally stop driving herself to and fro the supermarket this past year. She said it was like having a limb chopped off, but she felt it necessary. Her reflexes aren't exactly what they used to be, and she certainly didn't want to put anyone else in danger. Brava that she came to this conclusion on her own!
Still, a remarkable 94 year old. Whose mind is seriously sharper than mine; whose energy level never wanes. Mom gets up at 5 a.m. (latest!), by 5:30 a.m. she's had coffee and toast, by 6:00 a.m. she is fully dressed with make-up and earrings, by 9 a.m. she has dusted, vacuumed, and she's put a chicken in the oven for dinner. No kidding! Such is her routine; her ritual, if you will. It is the framework in which she lives; it gives her order, and I suspect one of the reasons she is so mentally fit and happy.
So, here is to my mother on Mother's Day! While I don't have the same 'order' to my day; I have my rituals, as well, and I thank her for setting a good example. That is the best we can do after all. Be the person we were meant to be, and hope that others take note, specifically and particularly our children!
And to all mothers. May this day be a happy one!
