How Much Does Whoopi Goldberg Weigh?

Posted: 08/15/09 08:40 AM ET

Taking a break from my grueling home-work schedule, I plopped on my bed, remote in hand, and hit the "on" button. Serendipitously, The View popped up on the screen at a most delicious moment. As "fat" is my issue, my subject, my expertise, I was mesmerized by the topic. The "girls" were talking about an obese couple that wanted to adopt but were turned down by the adoption agency because they were too fat! The man, as I remember, had a BMI of 42, and 40 was the adoption agency's limit.

A heated conversation ensued about weight and Whoopi, bless her heart, trying to shed light on the emotions attached to the numbers on the Scales of Injustice, said that it's just a number and that she doesn't have a problem saying what her number is... and so she offered it to the audience: "174 pounds!" Cheers, claps, hooray Whoopi.

She then turned to Joy Behar and invited her to toss her number out there. But Joy and the rest, including their big-boy producer, sadly blew Whoopi's succulent invitation off. They moved on...but I didn't.

Here follows some vital information that can finally give you a new perspective on the Scales of Injustice and your number!

What does the scale really measure?

Do you know what the scale measures? Scientifically, that is?

Every object in the universe with mass attracts every other object with mass. (Some more massive than others!) Therefore, there is a pull, a force -- an attraction (even better) -- between you and the earth.

Your bathroom scale measures that force of attraction, and that force is called your weight. If you look at it in those terms, it takes the emphasis off fat and puts it on gravitational pull.
Nowhere in scientific data -- that I could find -- does it state that the scale measures hideous fat. It is only a number. There's no reason that we have to be in a twist over the attraction between the earth and us.

How attracted is the earth to you?

To Whoopi, I'd like to say, thank you for courageously tossing your number out there. Feel free to pass this happy spin on the scales of injustice to your friends at The View, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Sherri Shepherd, Barbara Walters and Susan Solomon.

The tyranny of the scale is not the best way to gauge one's health. Better to use a tape measure.
It isn't what you weight, but your percentage of body fat that will determine your health risks.
Throw away that scale and free your body and mind!
Eat healthfully and abundantly, and exercise every day in the fresh air if possible. Life's too short to be tied to the scale and a skewed society's demands.

Whoopi carries that 174 pounds quite well. I looked like a beached whale at 170 pounds, but I was also pregnant with my first at that time. I am taller than Whoopi, but my bone structure is much smaller. That is what makes the difference. Whoopi probably wouldn't look well at 125 pounds.

Telling someone your weight? That's the hardest thing in the world. I went to boarding school that was both boys and girls, and at the beginning and end of each school term they would weigh and measure us. Fair enough. But then they would say it our loud! There were just three of us who's weights were in the highers numbers and we would cringe or try to hide when this happened. It has left a lifetime scar!!
Love you,
Deb

Whoopie can carry 174 pounds..and look fine...a small-boned woman..not so much..or say a man OR woman who stands 5'0" tall...relative..right? Should not weight be more of a HEALTH issue..than a "looks" issue. this is just me..but "if" I'm a man who sooooo wants to adopt..and knows the BMI (is that body mass index..or what? not important)...is 40..and MINE is 42..my GAWD..I lose the friggin weight..for the KID!...(he can always put it back on AFTER the adoption...but can he play ball in 5 years without keeling over..and would he feed his kid mc'ds..see..this are my questions..more than caring about "does he look fat"..if he's healthy...great!..but parenthood carries responsibility...and adoption has "rules"..

Your faceshot, Janice..shows an average looking woman...please..unless it IS a health issue..don't worry about the 10-20 pounds Vogues says you should lose (your doctor..another thing)..

bottom line...right or wrong..adoptive Daddy needs to lose whatever..to get his child...it's not like they want a kidney..

Not speaking for Janice (or maybe I am) but she has worked hard to lose (sorry, remove!) the weight she once carried - and I don't think she's suggesting anyone lose 10-20 pounds here. I agree with your comment about the adoptive gentleman - the agency having a limit on BMI amongst other things, is sensible.
