Apple's Siri 'Rock God' Commercial: How Accurate Is It, Really?

Posted: 03/13/2012 1:10 pm

Apple's Siri-centric commercials for the iPhone 4S are the focus of a controversy this week, as a man in New York is suing Apple for what he claims are "misleading" TV advertisements.

The lawsuit charges that Apple's ads show Siri doing more than it can in real life; there is a sarcastic jab at Siri on the second page of the suit that essentially sums up the complaint, in which the plaintiff argues ironically that Apple's ads indicate that Siri "performs useful functions and otherwise works as advertised." (The intimation being that the real Siri neither performs useful functions nor works as advertised. Ahem.)

As a kind of (non-)scientific experiment, I decided to take a look at one of these iPhone 4S ads -- the much-discussed, rather polarizing "Rock God" commercial -- and put it through its paces. The video that follows is simply me repeating every voice command prompt in the Rock God ad, word for word. Every shot you see is a first take: No do-overs, no second chances. This "first takes only" rule means that I often completely fail to point my iPhone at the camera at first. Nobody's perfect.

Speaking of which: Siri comes out looking -- well, not so good. Perhaps she was camera shy or had been up late the night before. Perhaps the Siri servers were overloaded, or my AT&T "4G" network was sputtering. Perhaps my perma-groggy voice and disarming Southern drawl were too much for Siri to process at once.

Whatever it was, I got decidedly different results from Siri than the young Chad Kroeger of the commercial did. It is perhaps not grounds for a lawsuit, but it's worth noting that Siri responded to only two out of seven prompts on the first try as it did in the ad, with one coming with serious time lag, not at all the instantaneity that the commercial suggests. One mistake was also fairly minor: In the text message test, Siri heard "Our" as "Are" -- a small error, but an error nonetheless.

Below, you can watch the video for yourself, with the commands on the original Siri commercial followed by my commands to Siri here in the New York HuffPost office. I apologize to my audience for the occasionally spotty video quality, and to my mother for my beard.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to reprogram my iPhone not to call me "Rock God" anymore.

I upgraded to get SIRI and have come to really regret the decision.

SIRI is unable to accept requests, as often as not, and when you do get through, it cannot answer simple requests like: "How far is it to Denver?"

A seemingly simple request like, "Add the following to my task list,..." And it cannot do it.

Unfortunately, SIRI is a toy that does not work very well that Apple is falsely marketing as a viable tool.

I had intended for this phone to be the beginning of a company-wide transition from PC to Mac, but I think I will end that experiment with this phone and keep us PC based.

You base your company's computing needs on whether beta software on a mobile phone works as well as you would like? I hope you're not a public company and my mutual funds are invested in you . . . .

Whoa everyone! Let's be careful!
We have a tight path to follow.
Remember, one of our Apple bashing talking points is how Apple took Siri off the App store, and only has it on the new 4s. We have to maintain the idea that it is sooo compelling that Apple is using it to force people into premature upgrades.
However, we also need to ridicule the feature as useless, and ignore the Beta status, all at the same time.
I'm not sure how we'll accomplish all of this, but it's the job we've accepted as Apple bashers.

QFT. I'm glad I didn't upgraded to 4S. I have a jailbrokem Iphone 4 and I decided to give Siri a try using Spire and a paid Siri proxy. So far the only good use for Siri that I have found is looking up 5 day forecast when I am too lazy to open stock weather app or using the dictation part to text. Other then that I can do anything faster then Siri.

I don't have an iPhone, but it seems to me that there are a couple issues with this "Ex-Siri-Ment." First, surely the kid in the commercial already has a list called "Band names." You would need to set that up in order to perform the experiment correctly, no? Also, how is your phone going to know how to play a Bm9 chord? It has to know that your instrument is a guitar first, doesn't it? That part of the ad does seem a bit misleading.

Siri is in BETA. That means it's not supposed to be perfect. It should be expected.

That said, I've had very good luck with it on most occasions. My wife hates it. Maybe she'd prefer a dude's voice or for it to iron her clothes. But from my experience, she's really hard to please.

With the 4S and Siri you need an internet connection (3G) constantly to use your voice controlled Bluetooth speakerphone in your car. More often than not I keep data turned off. This wasn't a problem with the 4, where Voice Control was always useable. Wish Apple would fix this.

Another case of Apple pushing out a technology that's not Ready for Prime Time. They're making the same mistake that they did with the Apple Newton.

Well, Apple has had quite a few successes with the products that have come out since the Newton that was introduced 12 years ago in 1997. That was also the year that Steve Jobs returned.

In 1997, Apple stock was $4.67 a share. Today, Apple stock is $568.45. I guess that technology is ready for Prime Time.

Newton was 20 years ago. 1992 or so?

Apples individual stock price is only an indication of the company's recent refusal to split it, as they've done in the past. That means that most of their customers can't afford to invest in the company in any meaningful way. How much sense does it make to force their fans to make a choice between an iPad and one share of stock?

Absolutely!

I'm glad they chose not to include it in the iPad3. Features like that are not integral to the product and should be "apps" that you can add on for an additional fee. To market a new product with a feature that is both unnecessary and doesn't work as advertised is unethical.

I don't think the lawsuit has merit, but it certainly brings a lot of unwanted publicity Apple's way and may make the market think twice about selling us something half-baked.

Ask it the meaning of life, once in a while? The answers get pretty funny, but do it with people around. You will all laugh at some of them.

Wonder if the Apple programmers blocked any questions.

Can you ask it how many workers died making Apple products last year? Perhaps ask it what is the average salary of the person who put together the Apple product.
01:40 PM on 03/15/2012
Still beating that broken drum? It's a verifiable fact that the suicide rate at the Foxconn factories that make Apple products is about HALF the rate of China as a whole. The workers there are paid significantly more, and have better working conditions than the vast majority of entry level jobs in China. People walk for days, and queue for days, to try to get a job there. The Foxconn workers are paid much more, and have better working conditions, than the people who probably made your clock radio alarm, your TVs, your home movie equipment, your coffee maker and maybe your watch. Factory work is, by definition, boring and repetitive, and poorly paid. It's the same in this country too. Maybe your car was made in one of those factories? If you want to make some sense with your complaints, spew your vitriol at the real Chinese sweatshops. Or at the Chinese society that has developed over thousands of years. But it's pretty silly to keep blaming Apple when it's actually improving worker conditions in China.

Siri, like most women, will not be forthcoming with that information, unless you establish trust and a forge a friendship. :D (a little humor)

I just asked Siri if this was true... Siri ignored me and said "We are Apple... I mean borg... truth is irrelevant"

Some, yes, others... No. It didn't even come close to finding the music it was asked to find... And trying to get Siri to understand "Rock God" was like pulling teeth.
