Playing Poker With John McCain

Apparently, Sen. McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Palin, a so-called "feminist for life," is a first term governor who reportedly has only served two terms on a city council, and one as mayor before that. Were McCain to win the White House, Palin would be next in the line of succession which only goes to show that a candidate who professes to be so concerned with "experience" has flip-flopped again by picking someone with even less "experience" than Obama.

McCain poker: "I'll see you one two term senator and raise you with one first term governor."

He doesn't 'do' poker.
He plays craps.

He has a gambling addiction.
And an Oedipus complex.

Jayne,
Two bouts with cancer, seventy-two years old and he accuses Obama about making poor choices. She may be the greatest thing since collard greens, but the American public knows much less about her than Obama.
Considering abortion, the question for me is not so much is a zygote and a fetus human life, but when does that human life become personality? The Holy Bible presents man as consisting of a body, a soul and a spirit; for instance the Apostle Paul writes to the Thessalonian Christians, "And I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ" (I Thessalonians 5:23 AV).
The spirit is the life force within us that returns to God who gave it when we die; we know what is a body; however, most Christians would agree that the soul (psyche) consists of volition (will), cognition (intellect) and emotions (feelings). The question should be when does a fetus have emotions (love, joy, anger, etc), cognition and volition, not when does it have life. My little finger is human life, but that is all. Trouble is there is that element within our society that wants to use abortion as a method of birth control and for convenience. This does not even deal with a woman's right to choose to control her own body. What about tubal pregnancies, hydrocephalus, gang rape of a nine year old or incest with a nine year old?

OBHG,
Phil

Thank you for this illuminating, and level-headed response.

Isn't it amazing how the Rapture gang support this notion of a hierarchy of being. How, for instance, can anyone claim to believe in the "right to life" and, at the same time, boast of shooting moose? Are humans more entitled to survival than the animal kingdom? And, by extension, are some humans more worth saving than others? One has only to look at the infant mortality rate, in this country, as well as the demographics of those on death row, to see the hypocrisy that tries to pass itself off as Christian in America today.

If Palin, and her fellow Dominionists, see divinity as the deregulation of nature, they are moving the human race closer to extinction.

Thanks, Phil. You're right about McCain's choice of veep. Frankly, I think one way in which McCain can be sure of remaining on top is by finding a running mate who is guaranteed to stick to the bottom of the pan like Palin. Hell, nobody can accuse McCain of picking another Cheney.

Still, isn't it amazing how Palin, and other members of the Rapture gang, support the notion of a hierarchy of being. How, for instance, can anyone claim to believe in the "right to life" and, at the same time, boast of shooting moose, or shooting wolves from 20,000 feet? Are humans more entitled to survival than the animal kingdom? And, by extension, are some humans more worth saving than others? One has only to look at the infant mortality rate, in this country, as well as the demographics of those on death row, to see the hypocrisy that tries to pass itself off as Christian nation.

If the govenor, and her fellow Dominionists, see divinity as the deregulation of nature, they are moving the human race closer to extinction.

"Feminists for Life" believe in no exceptions to an abortion ban.

Honestly, I've never understood why those moderates who oppose abortion often make exceptions in the famous cases of rape and incest. I can understand the exception for saving the life of the mother--- two lives being at stake, you save the one that has achieved sentience and attachments in this world--- but I have never understood granting an exception for the fetus conceived in rape or incest. That wasn't the fault of the fetus. If you believe the fetus has a "right to life," then why would you hold that the arbitrary events leading to the fetus's conception, over which it has no control, should have any bearing on its right to life? Palin's position actually strikes me as logically consistent.

Thankfully, though, the pro-choice position, which I hold, provides its own consistency. You believe people should have control over their own reproductive decisions as a matter of principle, and that's that.

Correction. A true feminist would not want to be away from her family so much and the Downs child needs more attention than any VP could provide. As to being pro life. When the subsidies are so high for each child there is not a huge choice. A mother in New Orleans with several other children should be allowed and respected with making a different choice. A sensible choice. A mothers choice.

SO TRUE.

"McCain poker: "I'll see you one two term senator and raise you with one first term governor.""

Whatever two term senator are you talking about? You mean TWO YEAR senator Obama?
06:21 PM on 08/29/2008
Obama is 2/3's through his 4th year, after 7 years in the Illinois legislature, after being president of the Harvard Law Review, Constitutional scholar/prof, etc.... But we are talking about the VP here. If Jayne erred (wasn't that a famous novel?) it is because she could have said 6 term senator. Biden was elected to the senate in 1973 when Sara Palin was 9 years old!

One of the candidates thinks the VP pick is serious business, the other is seriously pandering.

I completely agree with you. Now just to convince the media...

Yes, and figure out how to get those low info voters informed who will vote for McCain thinking that Palin "seems nice".
01:16 PM on 08/29/2008
This decision is a pandering insult to Hillary supporters. It's also an implicit admission that Obama is right on moving America forward. McCain got spanked last and this late-hour move proves it. That he thinks women will base their decision solely on 'lady parts' proves how clueless he is.
01:34 PM on 08/29/2008
Agree.

Obama was so serious, looked so serious, determined, committed last night. He picked a serious and seriously prepared and experienced guy for a serious job (VP), because he knows the risks, and that this is serious business. Twice in my lifetime the VP has ascended to the presidency mid-term.

In contrast, McCain seems intent on making this election a farce.

A heartbeat away from President of the United States of America (leader of the free world)...

For the Democrats, Joe Biden. Experienced in foreign and domestic policy. Seasoned and poised. Incorruptible-- tested repeatedly and severely by life. A "regular joe".

For the Republicans, Gov. Sarah Palin, a candidate with less domestic and foreign policy experience than Dan Quayle. Though she is a former Miss Alaska (and Miss Congeniality).

The experience issue is now off the table.

As President Clinton noticed, Senator Obama's choice of Joe Biden demonstrates good judgment. Senator McCain's choice, not so much.

A heartbeat away: Senator Joe Biden vs. Gov. Sarah Palin

Obama-Biden vs. McCain-Palin... Now, which ticket for President of the United States makes you feel safer?
07:43 PM on 08/29/2008
Already one right-wing talking head on Hardball has made the assertion "she's running for Vice-President, not President."

Somehow, with McCain at the top of the ticket, that rings hollow.

I wonder if anybody within the Republican brain trust has considered what to do in case McCain dies *before* November? They never think ahead. Palin is needed for a one-day bump. One day. Just to get Obama's historic speech off the news cycle. And maybe to get some PUMAs. That's it.

But what if she has to step in? Is she really up to the job? She's never had to deal with Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Taliban, Putin, Kim Jong Il, or any of it.

It's like invading a country without an exit strategy. Short-term thinking that could have disastrous results.

Senator Hillary Clinton can and should kill this farce in one statement, protecting her own support base. I am waiting for something more than Kudos, Palin.
