Occupy Consciousness: Healing the Collective Mind

Posted: 11/27/2011 2:43 am

Here in Asheville, NC, ranks of the Occupy movement have struggled peacefully to keep their encampments. Recently there was a march in protest of occupier arrests.

Bloggers on The Huffington Post have commented eloquently about the widespread protests and the statement being made from Oakland to New England.

In support of social change, there's another powerful approach, one that's complimentary to all viewpoints -- an approach essential to social evolution, yet so quiet it's easily drowned out amid the general media's focus on the obvious and sensational.

That approach: meditation.

"Change Begins Within"
The above phrase was coined by David Lynch as the theme of his philanthropic foundation's annual benefit event to support Transcendental Meditation stress-reduction programs for students and at-risk populations -- such as Native Americans, veterans with PTSD, child prostitutes, prison inmates and the homeless.

Why this initiative to teach people a meditation technique -- why not food, shelter, clothing, or job training, as other altruistic organizations provide?

Because real change begins within. Our world is as we are. It will always be necessary to affect responsible change on the outside, but whatever good can be accomplished in society depends on the quality of heart and mind of those creating the change -- individually and collectively.

Besides, everybody needs to dissolve stress, and research shows that effective meditation is the most powerful stress buster there is.1 Stress wears you down. It clouds your mind and diverts you from right decisions. Doctors say it can kill you. And the total stress of all individuals coalesces to become collective stress--affecting the overall quality of life in society.

Meditating for Social Change
Imagine: countless numbers of people across the country, in their homes or together in meditation halls, sitting, closing their eyes and transcending, experiencing a level of consciousness where we're all interconnected. What if, by silently stirring this underlying, unified field, an influence of orderliness and cooperation could be created throughout collective consciousness -- dissolving social tensions and relieving government gridlock, stimulating economic confidence and supporting positive change?

Such a project is quietly underway and gathering momentum, on both national and global levels. In Fairfield, Iowa, 2000 meditators -- volunteers from 50 countries, of all races and religions -- assemble morning and evening, seven days a week to further this endeavor. Similar large, permanent "coherence-creating" groups are forming in South America, Europe, Australia, and throughout India and Asia.

Teams of forward-thinking scientists have tracked this phenomenon and published their studies in peer-reviewed sociological journals--showing promising results.2

I have written on The Huffington Post of this harmonizing influence that meditators have on others -- the scientifically measurable "field effect" ("Did Group Meditation Cause The Plummeting Crime Rate?" and "Are We All Interconnected By An Underlying Field?").

The extended societal influence of meditation aside, consider this: The effectiveness of everything we do -- for ourselves or others -- depends on the clarity of our consciousness, how much of our individual creative potential is available.

Meditation at its best allows us to tap into our inner reserves of creativity, clarity and orderliness of mind; it opens our awareness to the field of all possibilities within human consciousness and spontaneously rids us of obstacles that block our higher judgment.

Through effective meditation we can develop and fully occupy our own consciousness -- infusing possibilities that our minds have never seen -- and thereby gain the wherewithal to accomplish the big, positive changes needed in the outer world.

Creativity and World Problems
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi taught that all societal problems are rooted in a lack of human creativity. At the basis of every human mind -- deep within, beyond ordinary waking consciousness -- is a field of limitless creativity and intelligence. Through correct meditation, this untapped potentiality can be experienced and unfolded by anyone. The results are transformative, for each meditator individually and for the whole society.

Maharishi, 1974:

"Our inability to see clearly is not due to some inadequate arrangement of the objects of our vision. Although, as a result of restoring our sight, we shall be better able to rearrange those objects, our first task is to reclaim our full powers of seeing.

"Although there are certainly many things in the world to be put right, we shall not be able to accomplish this humane ideal by mere reshuffling the environment. It will never humanly succeed until we can see and appreciate that environment at its full value, until we can envision all its possibilities with expanded heart and mind so that they may be actualized to the advantage of everyone and everything in nature.

"Men and women, however great their responsibilities, have up to now been reduced to reshuffling the environment to varying effect, just because they have not known how to claim this birthright. As a result, it is becoming commonplace to point out that, in spite of prodigies of technological skill, in spite of explosions of objective information, mankind continues to suffer from collective disasters and individual inadequacies.

"When we resume contact with this deep source of creativity within us, we are able to appreciate all the limits that circumstances impose and see beyond them.

"That source within us from which all change arises, the interior reservoir of creative energy, gives to those who have learned to systematically draw upon it a quiet and justified confidence born of inner silence and strength."

based on my own good experience with TM, meditating for over 20 years and loving it, i would say yes, it is an efficacious means to make the world a better place. it has certainly makes my world a better place and it keeps getting better every day. for sure, true meaningful change begins within, and transcending -- experiencing the source of thought -- is probably the most powerful way to bring holistic transformation.

I practiced TM for 7 years (every single day) and gained nothing. They did thin out my wallet very well however. There is a wonderful "at the edge of your seat" movie out about the TM movement. Watch a trailer of it on the internet. Then decide if you want to watch the whole movie.

A person's negativity, of course, says a lot more about the person than about meditation.

I don't care what meditation technique a person practices, what they get out of it depends on them, how they do it, and on their individual make up and level of development. Your statement reflects a basic misunderstanding of meditation and of life itself -- that one would "blame" an innocent meditation technique for one's lack of success, is like blaming your running shoes if you're not a good runner. I haven't experienced TM, but know that any meditation worth its salt will produce benefits if practiced with the right attitude. It is well known that TM, as a meditation technique, is extremely effective and well worth its salt. And I find it hard to believe that anyone would practice a meditation technique for SEVEN YEARS (20 minutes twice a day as prescribed with TM), and keep doing it if they were not getting something good out of it. That just seems unnatural and a disingenuous statement. But so be it, anything is possible.

I wonder why, almost every time there's a negative statement about TM, it is a person who apparently just registered to make this negative comment, and who has zero fans...is it the same person, over and over?

anything that condemns the natural, beneficial process of effortless transcending, the experience of one's true inner Self, is a sham and based on confusion. period.

it is beyond comprehension how something so advantageous and positive as TM could be so miscategorized by someone, that something so benevolent as meditation could become the object of someone's wrath. i guess it takes all kinds.

Really beautiful points in this article! If we want this country to be all it can be, we each have to be all that we can be and do all we can to unfold our creativity and live healthy lives. Then we can create a country filled with good health, peace, harmony, prosperity and fulfillment.

I can see how with increased coherence in national consciousness, people would not make mistakes and create problems like the ones that the Occupy Wall Street movement is upset about. With a broader vision in a more coherent atmosphere, the banks, corporations and government would see what is good for the global economy is good for them also. Then poverty could be removed from the world.

Excellent article. And a great quote from Maharishi -- he has an awesome ability to describe the basics of the problem, and the solution, and this comes from being well-grounded in enlightenment.

chopra talks some nice words, but does he really have a practical plan to affect social change? it takes more than talk. wishful thinking won't create the needed effect of reducing social stress and raising the levels of coherence in society. what's being advocated in this article is not "mood-making" (to use Maharishi's phrase). the large groups of people transcending together is the mechanism that creates the overriding effect of coherence. and transcending is a very specific process that happens not through any random type of meditation, like concentration or mindfulness or visualization, but through a practice specifically designed for it-- one that allows the mind to go beyond thinking and sensations to directly experience the source of thought.

Chopra was smack dab in the middle of hte TM organization 25 years ago, but decided to leave it to start his own thing independently. It is amusing to hear him talk about "transcendenT" meditation and so on. HIs original books were careful to point out that only trained teachers of TM were qualified to teach TM. Then he rewrote them to make it sound like you could learn meditation anywhere, just so he could sell more books. it is amusing, in an OCD ind of way, to look at all the different editions of _QUantum Healing_ he has published over the years (without noting that they are different editions, anywhere in the book!). He rewrote everything to conceal the origins of his training. He even removed the dedication to his teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, from the front of the books, and rewrote the introduction to delete the passage where he explained that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi had instructed him to write the book in the first place!

I was doing publicity work for Chopra nearly 25 years ago. I suspect I know far more about him than you ever will.

Brilliant insights yet again Jeanne. I especially enjoyed the explanation of change begins within. Seems to be the message from the wise throughout the ages. Please keep your articles coming. You are one of the best writers for Huff post as far as I can see . thanks again.

A great perspective. So often the world is changed by what first goes on inside of man.

i think that's the only time society is changed and takes a leap forward -- by what goes on inside...that's why developing the mind is more important than anything else...

Another great article! I love the expression, Occupy Consciousness. Let's make O.C. the next national demonstration---synchronized group meditations in all major cities!
Thanks, Jeanne.

Nice comment and quote. Yes, people can keep their diversity, even strengthen it, but the unifying value is what brings the most needed value of balance and harmony.

Thank you Jeanne. There has been too little attention given to the research on the group dynamics of consciousness and to the effects of meditation on society. You've provided a clear introduction to a wider audience.

In a world dominated by differences and diversity, sometimes the underlying unity of life gets lost. It's just this, the underlying unity of life, that is contacted and brought out through the TM technique. So many opinions, so many views - and everyone feels they are right. What is lacking is that unifying nature of life that can bring together even the farthest viewpoints. Such a simple solution to an age-old problem. This quote from Maharishi sums it best:

“All diversity exists on the basis of an underlying unity. There is the field of diversity, not only in people but in all creation. But there is a unity underlying all these individual existences. It is this basic level of unity -- that unbounded, unchanging field of pure consciousness -- that is contacted when the mind settles down to the state of least excitation. When this basic value is applied to life, individuality is made stronger, but at the same time it brings together the growing differences to make a strong society. It's like the sap in a plant. When the sap strengthens the individual petals, at the same time it strengthens the unity of the petals. The flower blossoms in its full glory.”

Thanks for this great article on a timely subject: Occupy your own consciousness rather than someone else's!

So much of life in the world today seems to be dictated by the media telling people what to do, how to dress, what's "in" or "out", what to be worried about, etc. It's like everyone is living out the media's consciousness in their daily life!

By meditating and getting to access or occupy OUR OWN consciousness, we can wake up and see what WE want, rather than what someone else wants. Empowering people to be themselves, and act from within, is so powerful!

Thanks for this reminder to be ourselves and a way to do it.
