Obama Canvasser Punched in the Face

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

A woman canvassing for Obama in Wisconsin was punched in the face by a man ranting about ACORN. The woman was part of a canvassing effort organized by friends of mine. As we were about to go on stage for Oobleck Election Play 2008: The Trojan Candidate, a friend of our lighting designer who was in the same canvassing group called and told her the story.

The silver lining is that when the woman who had been assaulted returned to Chicago, there was already a voicemail message from Barack Obama expressing his sorrow that she had had to go through such an experience.

That's it. McCain supporters are dicks. The usual gang of conservative bigmouths are inciting violence with their propaganda, and the suckers who want desperately to believe are so frustrated with the lack of believability of the propaganda that they're lashing out with violence and violent rhetoric.

Meanwhile, Obama has such a great organization that he heard about this small incident and contacted the victim before the end of the day.

More as the details come out.

This is an absolute disgrace. If Sen. John McCain has any sense of honor he will put a stop to this terrible cycle. No one should fear for their safety because they are willing to engage in the political process. No one should be afraid to exercise their civil rights. As Sen. Obama said in his acceptance speech, ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!

I sincerely hope this lady presses charges. What a classy guy to hit someone, and a woman at that.
Our mostly Republican town is having a problem with Obama lawn signs being slashed. I hope that's as far as it goes. I remember feeling apprehensive about putting an Obama bumper sticker on my car but I've had no problems and lots of smiles and waves from people I don't know. One thing that really sticks out in my town this election year is the decided LACK of McCain signs!

I live in a suburb of Seattle, and on my street alone is about 80% McCain to 20% Obama signs, and two Hummers!!! I HATE IT!!!!!!!!

People think oh, Seattle, the latte sipping elite sandals and socks people all liberal.. trust me, 5 miles outside of seattle and you start seeing the McCainiacs.....

I see no purpose of lawn signs anyway, they do not get someone to vote one way or another...

I don't know, living in Alaska, the lawn signs are pretty nice to see. There are 6 Obama signs on my road and no McCain/Palin signs. Makes you feel good.

Yikes! Very sorry to hear that, Banned. You near Madison Park or something? Or farther north up I-5? Can't imagine anywhere else that would be around 20% McCain *anything* in Seattle. I'm near Ravenna, and it's 100% Obama signs here---and I'm not kidding! I've yet to see a McCain sticker or yard sign 'round here at all.

We're somewhere left of heaven, I 'spose...it's pretty wild. :-)

It was obviously John Lewis' fault -- or maybe it was because Obama didn't agree to town hall meetings -- or maybe because he didn't agree to public financing. One thing we know for SURE -- it's NOT the fault of the Repub-lie-can who actually punched her in the face.

So many of us saw that this was the direction McCain/Palin's campaign of hatred was inciting people to go. I don't blame that campaign for creating this hatred. Racism and ignorance exist. But it was up to them to step up to the plate and calm things down before events got to this point. If McCain can't calm down his supporters and placate the wave of hate and violence that is building, then what kind of President would he be? If he can't lead America now, he does not deserve to lead us in January.

I do blame the campaign because they are the ones that have stoked the fires of racism, fear and hate and have allowed their supporters to express it freely at their rallies and in their names.

Who were the people around her that didn't step in after he hit her? Geez, I'm a female who's trained in karate and I wish that would've been me. I would've shown him how you should hit someone to take them down. Unbelievable. Where's McCain denouncing this behavior?

The fact that Mc Cain did not hold a news conference to acknowledge one of his supporters punch a female canvasser in the face is unbelievable. Where is this honorable straight talk express at?

I pray charges were filed against the supporter who tried to shove the ACORN rhetoric down peoples throat was arrested on the spot.

My prayers go out to women canvassing in Wisconsin who bore the brunt of hate run amuke.

I have to tell you, it really says something that Barack Obama called this woman personally. Not one of his aide's, not a secretary, but HIM. It just supports the good opinion I already have of this man. It feels good to dare to believe that the little guy really CAN count in this country again, if only we have the right man in office.

IT becomes increasingly evident to me who the better human being is.

The problem is that McCain/Palin are creating more hate and more division in our country and Obama is showing strength, stability, and great character. Obama is what our nation needs and damn those Republicans who think they are above the law, and that their lies about Obama are true. The Republicans are spreading lies about Obama that are untrue...whereas the Democrats are spreading truths about McCain/Palin that are true. Go Obama/Biden - they deserve to win and we deserve to have them as our leaders!

The 72 year old guy was arrested. I heard he actually grabbed her hair and dragged her by the hair bumping into and pushing her. She was trying to get away to leave while he was dragging her to leave. He yelled at her about how she was connected to Acorn. This information, I was told came from her canvasing partner and friend. who witnessed the whole thing. Obama most kindly called her, left a message with his number. She called back and her aides put Obama on and he thanked her for canvassing and asked how she was.

This is a open and condoned form of racism being called a election. RNC needs to be sued for inciting hate. Something bad is going to happen I fear!

McCain needs to address is supporters as a whole and deal with this before it goes too far. Earlier I read that someone's tires were slashed. That means some knife weilding person is out there and could seriously injure someone or worse.

McCain and Palin started this, they need to end it and NOW.

The tire slashing issue was at the Obama rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The folks were parked on a residential street, not at the collesium. It is still reprehensible that people would stoop to this level.

The hatred generated by the McCain/Palin ticket is horrible. It has even stopped my dad from talking to me because he believes that Obama is a terrorist and just sent me some stupid, lethal email that stated that Obama was the anti-christ. Good God, what is going on!!!!

Things like this incident is happening and JOHN MCCAIN doesn't eve care. He doesn't care what he
and his campaign is doing. Anything to win. Well he won't win because the american people will not stand for it. They will elect BARACK OBAMA.
