When I arrived in Detroit to intern at the Free Press many years ago, I saw a local character dressed in a bright yellow rain slicker, no matter the weather, theatrically directing traffic in front of the Cadillac hotel. He was there every day. My troop of interns suggested to our editors that he'd be a story. Apparently every group of interns had the same idea. And the editor sternly admonished us that we shouldn't exploit the man's insanity. Nuts aren't news.

I wish that same editor would give the same lecture to Piers Morgan at CNN and the news departments at NBC and ABC regarding Charlie Sheen.

Far be it from me to diagnose Sheen from afar, but I agree with Howard Stern yesterday when, after playing Sheen's clips, he said the guy sure sounds bipolar. Yes, Sheen is acting very much like the manic people I have known. Time asks whether he's bipolar. Whatever. He's clearly not acting sane.

So why are they interviewing him? Not because they expect him to say smart things that give insight. Neither are they trying to give a picture of mental illness, for they give no context. On Piers Morgan's nightly exhibition of ratings neediness, the star dismissed doctors' mentions of bipolar disease and then Morgan stepped up to give him a clean bill of mental health, telling Sheen he is "alarmingly normal." I think in the field they call that enabling.

What Sheen does may be news. What his network didn't do is also news -- when he abused women, they kept him on the air to keep the ratings he gets. What his network did do is news -- they yanked him only after he issued a manic rant against his producer.

But is what Sheen says in his haze of insanity or drugs newsworthy? I don't think so. I think it's exploitation. They want him to act nutty. Ratings, man, ratings.

After the horrid Arizona shooting, the gunman's lunatic rants online came to light. This is now part of the news cycle: madman commits horrid crime; search internet; find madman's words; make on-screen graphics of them; read them over and over out loud. For a while, news people read this madman's words as if there was something to be heard in them. But they were so looney even the news people had to say so. Context.

One way or another, by one definition and diagnosis or another, Charlie Sheen is a sick man. He doesn't need airtime. He needs couchtime. News people are ill-serving him and the issue of mental illness in this country by putting him on the air as if he were just another source, another celebrity. They are not informing the public. They are exploiting Charlie.

Let Charlie have his run. If he survives he will be a Hollywood legend. if he does not he'll just be another Greek tragedy.

Charlie has a well documented history of alcohol abuse and disrespecting women, which have brought attention to him as a "celebrity behaving badly". His disrespect for his producers should cause any production to shut down, but his public reaction to the shut-down and his desire to stay in front of the public have fueled the media attention. The producers have essentially said that they won't allow their star to get away with whatever he wants and still be allowed to work, while Charlie seems to say he doesn't need them interfering with his lifestyle and can generate his own attention.

He has sought to generate attention in order to prove that he's still a valuable commodity and that the producers can't get the best of him. Of course, the news media eats it up because it's real life drama with a bizarre celebrity. While many people cynically see his life unravelling with his crazy antics, his fans are probably just excited to get a glimpse of his off-stage life.

I somehow feel that we are witnessing the transformation of Charlie Sheen from TV sitcom star to TV reality show star.

What is on TV that isn't exploitive?

It's painful to see Sheen undone. I did not look at the face of the AZ shooter-- he looked too crazy! And Sheen is an excuse to not look at Libya, the super poor, abuse of women. He threatens to kill a woman and the show must go on; he insults his producers: enough! How is that for crazy. All of them.

The attention Charlie gets is the reason he is in this situation today. It really is not funny especially if he is a danger to himself or others. If this were your husband, father, or son, you would be very worried about him. I hope he can get clean and sober and be able to look back at this time as a reminder of what he does not want for his future. This in not winning.

Charlie Sheen is a distraction. Any time mainstream media talks about Charlie Sheen, they are distracting their viewers from 'real' news they could use. Charlie Sheen is the 'run-away bride' of the day.

Oh please.

Charlie Sheen is news because the news doesn't want to report on more important things.

A nice little diversion to what really SHOULD be written and talked about.

I do feel sorry for Charlie, but I feel sorrier for his family. He is an adult who has chosen to unmask his contempt for all of the schmucks who watch his show. Do I think he should be protected from his own stupidy by the same media that has disemboweled people far more innocent than he? Not really. He is not 19, 21. He is a 45 year old father of five, who when asked a question wants to know what kind of car anyone who deigns to criticize him drives. Charlie has bought into all the superficiality and immorality that Hollywood passes for entertainment.

Apologies if this has been said before, I'm coming it after 200 comments.

Although I don't argue the exploitation, couldn't it be said that this exploitation, aka exposure, has helped some celebrities see how sick their behavior was, and subsequently receive help and/or clean up their lives? Britney Spears comes to mind.

For those of you who still think this is all a put-on by Charlie, let's revisit another one of his "put ons" from a few months ago:

Still think he is just having fun with us ?

CNN is becoming a bad joke.
The only reason people watch it is that it is not quite as obnoxious as Fox News.

Thank you for your article. It is worse than sad to see the wall to wall coverage of a man falling to pieces, losing his sanity in front of our eyes. He show has a cute kid and some funny lines, but is 30 minutes of disrespect to women. So why is it so popular ? Why are his breakdown rants soaring in ratings on television? It looks to me,that in spite of all our agreeance on the rights and respect of women, and despite our condemnation of ruining our lives and those of our families and friends: the viewing public just love to see a guy getting away with getting as high as possible, short of death and screwing blondes with abandon. SHame on us. If Sheen loses his life as this hysteria inflates, I believe that we all share in the blame.

I can't help wondering how things would change if both show biz and political types were held to the same standards as, say, Taco Bell employees. Meaning that in order to work they had to show up for work on time, get drug tested, be subject to firing if they commit crimes, etc., etc.
