I'm Outraged - Why Aren't You?

Posted: 02/ 8/2012 7:20 am

For full disclosure, I am a Catholic, I am a Democrat and I am a woman. I am also someone who if push came to shove can afford to pay over the counter for birth control.

But the false outcry this week over the need to cover birth control has made me raving mad. And I am shocked it has not enraged more women across this country, whether they are Democrats or Republicans.

Aside from the fact that 28 states already mandate the same form of coverage, including Mitt Romney's home state of Massachusetts and Newt Gingrich's home state of Georgia, this debate has put into question whether ensuring women have access to affordable healthcare should be a priority no matter where they work.

Birth control is not only for family planning; millions of women are prescribed birth control to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, to treat uterine fibroid tumors and anemia. A recent study by the National Cancer Institute reported that a woman's risk of getting ovarian cancer decreases by approximately 50% after using contraceptives for 5 years.

The fact is that the vast majority of middle class women in this country can not afford to spend hundreds of dollars a year on birth control. A recent Planned Parenthood study found that nearly 50% of women ages 18-36 have struggled to afford birth control.

The new guidelines could save an average woman up to $600 per year in healthcare costs. That is $600 to spend on a month of groceries for a family of four, a month of rent or three months of car payments.

And the financial benefit to the employers is indisputable as well. According to the National Women's Law Center, not providing women with contraceptive coverage would cost employers an estimated 15% to 17% more.

Those who are opposing the new guidelines, including the full slate of Republican candidates for president, are flat out rejecting the view of the majority women, including 77% of Catholic women who support birth control without co-pays.

These changes are a victory for women's health and women across the country should not only be rejoicing that an administration has finally stood up for women's health, but they should be outraged by the opposition to the basic right of affordable and accessible health care.

The National Cancer Institute took 6 decades to admit to the tobacco/lung cancer link.

The pill causes cancer: (according to the same NCI researcher who said it didn't, according to the World Health Org, and according to the American Cancer Society)
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/175394.php

Furthermore, Reurters reported last year that 25% of women are pre-disposed to a vein thrombosis problem that would put tham at a significant risk of blood clots.

Poor girls 20 and under cohabitating on the pill have a 48.4% chance of getting pregnant in one year.

You better take a better look at that Planned Parenthood study. They're always full of it...

Oh yeah, mandated contraceptvies will solve a lot...it will help Obama fulfill his promises for more jobs...for lawyers....

Have you read the reports on what Fluoroquinolones can do? Should these antibiotics not be covered, as well? Do you realize that ALL prescription drugs have side effects, many with adverse reactions that can kill or cause permanent disability? Should the entire pharmaceutical industry shut down? I understand your point, but it's weak and I just don't buy it.

OK, there's a simple solution to this dilemma. If the Catholic Church doesn't want to pay for contraception for its non-Catholic employees, fine. They shouldn't be getting a cent of my tax money, either. It's a win/win.

It strikes me as hypocritical that people object when the government issues rules that affect everyone for the common good, but not when a religious denomination does the same (and affects non-members). With separation of church and state, this should be a non-issue. If you don't approve of birth control, don't use it. Whether you like it or not, it's considered part of women's preventative health care. Why stop at objecting to covering birth control? Object to covering cancer and diabetes screening. Object to covering Viagra. As citizens, we pay for a lot of things that we don't use (police, fire depts, libraries, public education of other people's children, etc.). Libertarians, fundamentalists, and conservatives seem to object to "footing the bill" for things they don't use or approve of, but have no objection to others sharing the cost for things *they* benefit from.

It's tradition. It seems like, since the begining of time, the Pope has ruled the people. Luther had to split with the Church to overrule the Pope. Scientists faced heresy and death to overrule the Pope. King Henry the VIII started a new religion because the Pope told him he could not divorce. This is just the way it is. Nobody overrules the Pope. Priests don't marry and Catholics don't use birth control. That's it in a nutshell. Who does Obama think he is...the King of England?

Yeah for big pharma!!!!! This mandate means more money to be funneled to the pharmaceutical industry.. .

Yehaa GO CRONY CAPITALISM!!!!

"The new guidelines could save an average woman up to $600 per year in healthcare costs. That is $600 to spend on a month of groceries for a family of four, a month of rent or three months of car payments."

$600 a year = 50 per month.

Lets compare
High speed internet $40 - $50 per month
Many cell phone plans $50 per month
home phone service $30 per month
cable tv $40 - $50 per month
1 40ct pack of condoms from Walmart $12 --> that equal 30 cents a session or 7 seconds per minute!

This issue is about the government imposing its values on others who disagree! Did you ever wonder why the Catholic Church opposes birth control? Google Dr. Janet Smith, she gives fantastic explainations. All churches opposed it until the 1930s. If you don't believe in what the CC believes in, maybe you shouldn't identify yourself as Catholic.

And maybe the Catholic Church should have some faith that its members will follow the teachings of the Church. No one is forcing anyone to use birth control; only to provide it to those who would use it.
05:24 PM on 02/09/2012
Arrant nonsense. They ARE being forced to pay for birth control - for Gentiles, as well, I believe - which they believe is a violation of their religious practices. That is a direct and clear violation of the First Amendment. On the flip side, NO ONE is denying anyone access to birth control by saying they won't pay for it. You have the freedom speech, but I am under no obligation to pay for your internet access to post here. Ridiculous.

If everyone followed your statement, the Catholic church would lose half it's population.

"I am a Catholic, I am a Democrat"

and I believe from your name, also of Polish blood, as I am. affordable and accessible health care is not a right. a govt that can give you everything can also enslave you. look to your ancestors for guidence. recent history will reveal when secularism becomes the national religion, millions are murdered. what is shocking is how few are familiar with the Bill of Rights, amendment 1, and so willing to give up not only their own protections, but those of their countrymen.

Believe me, I am outraged. I never resented the fact that I have had to pay as much for family health insurance as some colleagues who had a regularly pregnant spouse and a passel of children, until now. It is just one more way that Republicans have found to pit us against one another.
05:26 PM on 02/09/2012
Positively Orwellian to say Republicans are the ones pitting us against one another. There was no controversy at all until the administration decided to step all over the First Amendment and order a Church to break its own laws.

You've forgotten about all the states that already made this move with nary a whimper on the part of your buddies. Are you going to demand that they undo it, too? Probably not, since it is mostly just to try to bring down a President that you stage these tantrums.

Strange how some posters assume that all churches oppose birth control and assume that all women share the same religion as their employer.

Obviously neither is true.
05:30 PM on 02/09/2012
Obviously. But making the Catholic Church (of whom I am not a member) pay for a practice they believe is a violation of their tenets - which it also obviously is - is a clear infringement of their religious practice. That's the true outrage, but even without the First Amendment issue, it boggles the mind that so many posters equate the right to something with someone else being required to pay for them to have it.

Religion already gets way too much respect and tax breaks - both undeservedly so. Enough is enough already.
12:11 PM on 02/09/2012
I certainly would not argue with the benefits of birth control and the right of anyone to use it, but I do object to the government forcing private companies to provide or not provide anything. This is governmental intrusion into private industry and it should stop immediately.

Governmental "intrusion" into private industry helps keep our air breathable, our water drinkable, and in this case, women healthier.
