HERE'S MY TAKE #5: How Should Authorities Respond To Long Lines And Chaos At The Polls?

"Here's My Take" gives you an opportunity to present your view, opinion, or choice in a way that commenting or op-eds don't permit (Check out #1, #2, #3 and #4 to see what it looks like). It's a new format! And a new way for you to engage others in the HuffPost community. We'll publish peoples' submissions on HuffPost's OffTheBus as part of the "Here's My Take" feature. Think of it as a citizen think-tank, a series of discussions, each one focused on a single issue or scenario. This idea came to me after editing op-eds for OffTheBus and moderating comments for HuffPost. Got ideas for ways to make it better? I'm open to them - email me at heresmycall@gmail.com. Don't have time, but want to participate later? Join OffTheBus.

To get us started, Here's My Take:

When I envision the circus that will take place Tuesday in this country I am elated as well as terrified. I am volunteering with the ACLU in my state to monitor polls that day. The state I live in is not in the limelight and should be "pretty quiet" as far as chaos. But we don;t enjoy early voting, either, only by absentee ballot, so we will experience the same issue with lines as everyone else. I think that, for this week's contest, local authorities should extend voting hours as well as supply folding chairs and water. I know, it costs $ to rent chairs and buy water -- tough tooties, I say! Splurge for Democracy! Voter advocacy groups should be able to pitch in, as well as local campaign offices.

I truly believe that many of the polling locations will have "vote-gaiting," like tail-gaiting but without the grilling going on -- or in terms avid concert goers will understand, there should be a "lot scene." If this is indeed the case, then seats, liquid and understanding are all that will be needed, the rest will take care of itself.

Now I want to hear what you have to say. Take a few minutes and think through these issues then use this Survey Monkey link to send in your reply. Alternatively, you can send it to "heresmycall AT gmail.com", although the Survey Monkey link is a superior submittal method.

GO VOTE NOW! Make History! Obama is need of all the votes necessary to create a landslide. Let's make sure that our state turns blue! Bring your friends and family - make it a group thing! Wouldn't you want to say 1 year from now, 5 years from now, or even 20 years from now that you contributed to the most highlighted election in US history? Wouldn't you be proud to tell your kids/grandkids years from now that you voted for this election? It will be the most talked about election for centuries. Voting is a right and a privilege. Let's all make history together!

I agree about the Oregon system of vote by mail! But if we have to have polling places for early voting, why not open more of them? In my county in western NC, there are only two...one in town and one on the local university campus for the students. I live about 15 miles from town, but only 1/2 mile from my usual voting place. I will wait for Tuesday to vote at the fire department where there is never a line!

Rachel Maddow calls these long waits the equivalent of poll taxes-and I agree. Who can afford to take a day off of work to stand in line. It is a disgrace. Let;s look at the Oregon system. nationwide.

Here is my take--The last time that I voted in Ohio, the polling place was a local gym. Upon entering, voters were divided into sections according to the initial letter of the last name, i.e. A-D, E-J, etc. and this limited the length of each line. The voter registrations were similarly located at each location so verification was swift. My voting experiences in California have been equally good. To prevent vote theft, I suggest publicizing the name(s) of those responsible for the integrity of the count daily for four weeks prior to the election along with the home address of each. Such an honor should not go unrewarded.

This whole long-line stuff for voting - 8 to 10 hours in Georgia - is truly sad. The Governor of Georgia should have been forced to increase hours. I don't understand why this is all such a mystery. Every state knows how many registered voters there are and should be able to figure a percentage of turnout for early voting and organize accordingly. It's really a form of poll tax I guess. People who are paid hourly and have to take time off to vote can lose an entire day. Criminal I think.

What a perfect time----when Obama is sworn in and has a congress interested in something other than so-calle"social issues like choice," and will cooperate on PROGRESS....to truly find ways to not only make voting less stressful.......but finding ways to prevent the GOP from vote stealing.....voter suppression....and whatever other methods the GOP uses to "steal" the rights of millions of Americans.
I have no doubt that even some (sane) republican lawmakers will assist.

OBAMA FOR EIGHT.....THEN HILLARY FOR EIGHT....Then we'll talk about Obama's daughters!
IMAGE LIVING IN AN AMERICA THAT WOULD CHOOSE AS ITS' LEADER NOT ONLY A WOMAN....OR AN AFRICAN AMERICAN....BUT AN AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN! Who knows? This IS America where anything is possible!

It is absolute lunacy that there are such lines for voting! This is 2008 and we have walked on the moon... you mean to tell me we cannot come up with a system for making voting simple.

The German model above sounds reasonable...... every 4 years its the same madness! Then it gets put on the backburner and forgotten until the next election comes around.

Governor Crist in Florida expanded early voting hours to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 12 hours over Saturday and Sunday. Whoever can should vote early, which will shorten lines and wait time for voters who must wait for Election Day to cast a vote. When I voted last weekend, volunteers passed out bottled water during the hour wait and had couches set up and special parking areas for the disabled.

My wife is German. They have none of these kinds of problems in Germany, or (making the possible exception for Italy) throughout Europe. The solution is simple. Your identification number (or SSN number) is lifetime. When you vote, the official checks it, logs you in electronically-- preventing you from voting again in that election anywhere in the country-- and you vote.

No nefarious disenfranchisement, no "voter fraud" challenges, no Republican dirty tricks. You can be a student, have moved several times, a gypsy. It doesn't matter because your government has verified who you are and that you have only voted once. Simple.
09:02 PM on 10/31/2008
well see... the reason we dont have it that simple in America is because if we did, then the republican party wouldnt have it so easy to cheat, fraud, intimidate, hassle, "challenge voters", create havoc, and get away with it year after year effectively deterring thousands of minority voters in every major metro area in the country.

My sample ballot I got in the mail had a phone number to call for an early ballot. I got on the phone and spent all of 3 minutes arranging for my early ballot to be mailed to me. That one phone call extends through the next few elections as well, so I don't have to call again for a couple of years.

After I got my ballot in the mail, while seated in my easy chair, I spent the afternoon online. With my ballot before me, I researched each candidate and referendum and filled in the ballot. A couple days later when the weather was nice, I drove less than 3 miles to the ballot box. There was no line. A helpful poll worker made sure I had prepared the ballot envelope properly and I slipped it in the slot. I could have even dropped it in a mailbox but I'm a little paranoid about my vote getting lost. How easy can it get?

Here is my take:

If you can not wait in a long line for THIS MOMENT in history then you are a fool. People camp out overnight in lines for a frig ging Harry Potter book - WHY is this even an issue?? VOTE! If it takes all night do not rest and get out the vote!

If your line is long call a friend to bring you a snack and carton of beverages for folks in the line. Make it an EVENT because it is one!!!

Respond to long lines by:
A) have election commissions Create 16'H x 8'W Billboard ballot with all the choices, & sidenotes of instructions in clear visibility from at least 50 feet away Mounted near the entrance to the building. Have 1 or 2 election volunteers walk the lines to answer questions,

B) Advertise requirements ahead of time for voting/registering forms of Identification.

That way most voters get in there and they know exactly what to do and how to make their choices and move fast. The best way to move a long line is to make it more efficient and quick moving, and it makes all people involved happier, more relieved an more sure of their choices.

C) Intimidate all democratic "appearing" voters into thinking they'll be arrested for voting, or tell them their votes will only be counted as 3/5ths of a person. That would be the normal occurance every 4 yrs anyway. j/k

D) At every voting location, the Feds should bring healthy / sweet snacks with Hot coffee, Tea or water for people in lines. The Feds should make voting as easy & as pleasurable as possible as well as take care of people susceptible to heatstroke, bad circulation/feet, low blood sugar etc.

E) place numerous chairs & benches out along the lines for elderly, children, & people with some health concerns.

Respond to Chaos with an immediate Beat down of anyone thats Chaotic.
heheee. Let them vote, but beat the crap out of them for disturbing

It is absolutely ridiculous that we have 'voting problems'! Why doesn't this country have one accepted, approved method of registering votes perhaps based on social security numbers? Why must there be long waits? Absurd! We only had 8 years to work on the solution. How lame.

Roman777-----you are right, of course. But here in America it seems, your SSN might be the same # carried by 17 illegal aliens. We first have to figure out how to prevent identity theft, I think. But we certainly need SOMETHING! I voted a week ago.....and from the time I parked till I was out----1/2 hour! In Illinois....Springfield, in fact. I don't know just what measures our city leaders took to make the process stress-free.....BUT I SAY: GOOD FOR THEM! People doing their jobs.......how about them apples?
