Honor Sacrifice by Supporting Vets

Posted: 05/26/2012 12:26 pm

This Memorial Day weekend, we reflect upon what it really means to honor the memory of the men and women who fought for our country. We'll visit gravesites, observe moments of silence, hold parades and barbeques and celebrate the freedoms our soldiers provided -- all important gestures.

But as a country, we can do better than that.

In Congress, while the House's proposed defense budget calls for significant increases, it also cuts 11 billion dollars from veterans spending -- including healthcare and disability pay. Be clear: we can't equate spending on veterans with spending on defense. Our strength is not just in the size of our defense budget, but in the size of our hearts, in the size of our gratitude for their sacrifice. And that's not just measured in words or gestures.

The President has overseen dramatic troop reductions in Iraq and Afghanistan -- and the first step towards caring for our soldiers is getting them home. He has also increased funding for veteran healthcare, pushed tax credits for businesses who hire vets, and approved a stronger GI bill to educate them.

But there shouldn't be a contrast between the political parties. Caring for veterans shouldn't be a partisan issue. It should an American one. We should be willing to show our respect by sacrificing something too, perhaps even, yes, by raising taxes on those who can afford it; who benefit from having a free nation, a free enterprise system could give back to those who enabled their prosperity. We are defined as a nation by how we treat those who have defended us.

As governor, when I visited our troops in Kuwait and Iraq, I served them Thanksgiving dinner. It was a small gesture compared to their sacrifice. And I hosted a Memorial Day ceremony every year, which brought together families of our fallen soldiers. It was simple and emotional, but it was important. I would say the names, ranks and cities of the soldiers, their families would stand with each name, and at the end, I would assure these families that we would not forget them. That their names would be etched in our hearts, that we would remember them in all things around us, when the wheat fields or the banners of white cloud in the sky waved in their honor. I thanked them as a governor and as a parent, for raising a hero.

And as one mom said to me, "That we remember my baby's name means that my son did not die in vain."

Ceremonies are important. But our gratitude has to be more than visits to the troops, and once-a-year Memorial Day ceremonies. We honor the dead best by treating the living well.

We will remember their names, this weekend and beyond. And we must remember them, as a nation, through a commitment to treat our living veterans as well as they have treated us.

Just 1 more reason why I simply do not understand why Vets generally lean Republican. Look at this, the House, and Romney supports the GOP plan, want to cut 11 billion directly from vets health care and disability. Yesterday there was a report that shows that 50 percent of soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan are disabled. With these huge cuts, how will we take care of these men and women....many with horrific life changing disabilities? Kind of reminds me of the GOP in another way...care more about the fetus than the baby who is born. They also care about the vet when he or she is risking their life, but when they come home and need help, same thing.

Yes, the GOP wants to "support" the troops, as long as it is support for the war. After all a great many of the GOP are either making money from the war or have wealthy donors that do. Once these brave men and women give their all and return home they are basically thrown out with the trash. There is no money to made from a wounded or disabled soldier, they only cost money. The real money is in the contractors! Obama is ending the wars, the veterans need money for care and where are the GOP? Why they are cutting veterans benefits. Sickening, especially since many of the privileged GOP have never fought in a war or have had children who fought a war. Sickening.

Most important thing we can do for the troops is to stop those pounding the drums for war with Iran.

I don't have sympathy for today's veterans. Nobody forced them into joining a military that attacks and invades other countries for very dubious and unclear reasons that aren't necessarily justifiable. I wouldn't say that these continued wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the Libyan invasion and a possible war with Iran, have really enabled my prosperity, or anybody else's. I truly think that America wouldn't really be that different had we never gotten involved in Libya or Iraq (you can make a case for an initial involvement in Afghanistan because of 9/11 and Bin Laden and the Taliban, etc.). I don't think these troops are making a "sacrifice". They are voluntarily lending themselves to wars and conflicts that are part of the reason why America has become increasingly unpopular around the world. That doesn't sound like something worth celebrating to me.

These Iraq war vets need our help. Most have done multiple tours leaving their families in dire circumstances for many months and years. I would hope that getting these exceptional people help with their problems would be a priority for all Americans, regardless of political party. These vets are beyond extraordinary. Their sacrifices should be on all of our minds.

Sorry, but there is nothing honorable about having participated in the U.S. Empire's killitary. I realize that some of the people who did participate were totally indoctrinated by the media, especially if they came from backwaters with, in pre-Internet days, no access to alternative media. But being fooled into participating in a criminal enterprise may make you deserving of pity, especially if you were harmed in the process. But it doesn't make you worthy of praise or thanks, except from the banksters, weapons makers, and other capitalist bloodsuckers you really did serve.
10:52 PM on 05/28/2012
You mean Crony capitalist blood suckers. True capitalists are small businesses like those with food carts. Mercantilists only hide behind a facade of capitalism.

A true capitalist would be one who owns hundreds or thousands of those food carts and pays wages out of the income from the carts to people who can't afford to own and stock their own cart. A crony capitalist would be one who has a monopoly on the food cart business because of his connections to the state apparatus.

We had an improved GI Bill...then the VA got a hold of it and is steadily whittling it away to nothing. I know plenty of unemployed or worse underpaid, under valued and under employed veterans who grabbed what ever job they could get. Universities, colleges, and employers still fail to give credit or value their military experience. Call me bitter but being married to a vet and having his so abused by the VA and local companies...its hard to see the evidence of a grateful nation...just one that keeps asking what more can you do for me???

It is so sad that the GOP uses our troops and then does not like to fund their needs after they are done using them as political pawns. Watching the GOP lead House use veterans programs by cutting them or holding them hostage with poison pill bills has disgusted me, and should disgust us all.

Thank you Mr. President for all you have done and are trying to do in spite of the GOP. You are an honorable man.

Very nice sentiments about our military Governor Granholm. The men and women in our military deserve the very best. A huge 'thank you' to each and every soldier who has served in our militarty, past, present, and future. A special hug to those who have lost loved ones while fighting for this country.

I tape the War Room on Current TV every night, and am amazed at the brilliance, the gentle and reassuring way Gov. Granholm presents the news each day.

Knowledgeable, respectful, and forcefully gentle. It's great to see more and more intelligent women presenting the news. Keep up the great work!.

Gov. Granholm was a great governor for Michigan. The GOP wanted to make her the face of evil when the auto industry went bankrupt, even though she had no control of those companies and the GOP never wanted to support our auto industry at all. She won a second term despite Dick Devos, of the ponzi scheme company known as Amway, spending millions and millions to try and defeat her. When I listened to her state of the state addresses I was extremely proud of her kind and gentle words for our vets and her love of the people and of the state of Michigan. She was also instrumental in getting Kwame Kilpatrick, the crooked mayor of Detroit who cost the citizens millions of dollars, to resign. Jennifer Granholm fought tirelessly for the middle class people of Michigan and for that she will be known in history as one of our greatest governors. The current GOP Nerd, (his campaign slogan, not mine) Rick Snyder, not so much.

Politicians when they are not giving a speech on the floor of the house or senate are fundraising. Both sides of the isle are pretty much useless these days. You read comments on here and you can see how our political discourse in this country has degraded from "I disagree with you" --- to ---"I don't even like you, or your just an idiot"
Disagree is now dislike and distrust and nothing can be accomplished that way.

Don't kid yourself EVERYONE is to blame for this-- right and left collectively. Republicans and Democrats both own this one ... good job people.

Bush III sent more troops to Afghanistan and has fallen in love with drone killings. His drone killings this year alone exceed all those done by Bush. He is also expanding sanctions to kill more children. Don't buy into their theater that there is any difference.

Let's see...Bush lied about WMD's, mostly because he wanted to avenge a stated assumption that Saddam wanted to kill his "daddy", Cheney became a millionaire many times over off the backs of dead soldiers, and he outed a CIA agent, Valerie Plame because her husband was not a fan.

We elected Obama to clean the Bush/Cheney mess (really want to say sheet) up.

He's doing an excellent job. So in a sense you are right, in more ways then just right. You fit the "you are an idiot" category. Check!
