Madame Voldemort Is Wrong: Public Employees Are American Heroes

Posted: 08/06/2012 11:15 pm

Forget about going all the way to the London Olympics for heroes. This weekend, we saw real heroes -- and real scoundrels -- right here in America.

First, look at the images from Pasadena, Calif. last night. You can watch them in this video. How fantastic that the American ingenuity of NASA scientists got us to Mars. It makes me proud to be an American. I can't get enough of these images from when the probe touched down. These scientists are American heroes.

And there was another American hero this weekend: Brian Murphy. He is the police officer who protected the Sikh community in Wisconsin during that awful tragedy yesterday. Despite being ambushed and taking nine bullets, he waved off medical attention so the victims inside could get help instead. He is in critical condition in a local hospital, and he is an American hero.

The NASA scientists and Officer Murphy represent the best of America.

And then there's the other end of the spectrum: an American scoundrel who reared her head this weekend, too. I refuse to give her publicity, so we'll just call this venomous person "she who shall not be named."

She said this about public employees: "Government jobs, we're for losing government jobs."

Well, guess what, Madame Voldemort: Those NASA scientists hold government jobs. Officer Murphy has one of those awful government jobs. Those who purify your water, inspect your meat, and test your kids' toys, as well as a huge number of nurses, teachers, and our soldiers, are public employees. The firefighters who don't hesitate to rush toward danger while you run away from it -- they are all public employees.

"Government jobs, we're for losing government jobs." Really? Those who devote their lives to serving our country, children, and neighborhoods are giving back. They have answered the call to serve. Public service used to be the highest of callings, until people like Madame Voldemort vilified it.

We need to be celebrating those who serve us rather than mocking them for the purpose of getting on TV and selling some books.

Now, no one in their right mind would think that her opinion actually matters. But, sadly, her opinion isn't hers alone. Mitt Romney, the man seeking the presidency, has this very same insulting, anti-public-employee rhetoric as she-who-shall-not-be-named. We all remember when he said, "[President Obama] says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It's time for us to cut back on government and help the American people."

When it comes from her mouth, we can write it off as the hateful, controversial nonsense of someone pining for attention. But when it comes from the mouth of a man seeking the highest office in the land, it's a whole 'nother thing.

What are you going to do, Mitt, if you become Commander-in-Chief? Insult the armed services? Alienate the Secret Service agents who would take a bullet for you?

Maybe your wealth means you don't need public servants. Maybe you can just build a private jail cell, hire private tutors and doctors, and pay for private contractors to pave the streets to your many homes.

As for the rest of us, I don't know about you, but I'm really, really, really grateful for the service of all you public employees out there.

You are the true heroes, and we thank you for your efforts every day.

Thank you Ms. Granholm. Your piece is the bottom line! Who can argue with that? The United States simply is a very large country with a lot of people that demand and require services. The ones that perform these services are public servants. Their work is what keeps this country operating. When someone talks about doing away with government workers it's usually about having a private entity take over with their sole purpose of growing their bottom line and raping the taxpayers.

With the debt the former Gov left for Michigan: I would be hiding out if I were you! Detroit especially is a wasteland...so just what were you doing other than receiving the benefits from taxpayers...?

It baffles me that those vehemently opposed to big government often support big business. They are upset when a school teacher gets a bountiful retirement but not so when a corporate executive, who did not even do a good job, gets a golden parachute equivalent to hundreds or thousands of public employee salaries. They are all atwitter when people get welfare services but quite tolerant when a major corporation lobbies for, and gets, a multimillion dollar tax break. Government redistributes wealth. It always has and always will. That money, however, should not be used to support and enrich those at the top of the economic structure.
I have heard the argument that corporate benefits are not taken involuntarily like taxes. That's wrong. When the price of a gallon of gas goes up a nickel so some some corporate executives can buy bigger yachts that nickel is extorted from us. It is a form of tax not acknowledged by those who rant about corrupt government but favor big business. When bankers and brokers killed the golden goose they just went outside America looking for another goose. Until we restore some balance between those who do work and those who manipulate money America will continue to decline.

Gov "always has and always will!" Dream on the USA is bankrupt--this administration is here to hand it over to theCommunist Chinese aided by the JIHADISTs...the Kenyan god king with his 102 Un Cons titutional Socialist CZARs spending more than all other administrations combined does not equal "always will!" Get rea- we are being shoved over a cliff...that has been the PLAN but both parties except for a few who have a conscience...!

Lupusnoire, well said and very clearly put. As you probably have seen the commercial by Mittens trying to brainwash and incite small brained people about the welfare work requirement. "How dare these people get a check without working". I bet he has siphoned off millions of taxpayer dollars. But like you said, to him that's not welfare.

Federal worker's salaries and benefits make up just over 2% of a multi-trillion dollar budget……ask any business owner of any size if he can boast the same ratio……there are at least two more constants in the universe……….affirmative action has never had anyone genuinely wishing he/she could actually become a person of color to gain employment and no person (especially in congress) would forgo the equivalent in federal pay and benefits or better when seeking employment.

The real truth is that some public employees suck and some don't. I have worked in a town where there were many federal civil service employees that did little to nothing for what they were paid. I can tell you that some of them use the fact that they are basically guaranteed a job for life and for which we will pay for their retirement. There are others, however who do a good or great job and get paid a reasonable or less than reasonable salary for that. The tricky part is sifting out the wheat from the chaff.

Public servants teach our children.

Public servants protect us.

Public servants put out fires.

While others were escaping the Twin Towers on 911, public servants rushed in.

Public servants lay down their lives for the rest of us.

The GOP demonize public servants.

Faux News demonizes public servants.

The GOP and Faux News are what is wrong with America.

Their attitudes and actions border on treasonous !!!!

And public servants get VERY well and retire nicely for providing these services.
09:49 AM on 08/09/2012
You obviously have never been a public servant.

Public servants make 1/3 what they would make in the private sector.

Oour POTUS oversees 3 million employees and a budget of 3.6 Trillion Dollars.

In the private sector he would make 100,000 Billion per year.

As a public servant he makes a little over 400,000.

Really? Some do, some don't. (Unfortunately, I was a 'don't.')

Statistically, the more education the position requires, the less a public employee will be paid compared to a private sector employee with a similar occupation. Public employees generally accept that out of a genuine desire to serve, because they can't do a truly comparable job in the private sector (police & fire come immediately to mind), or for the retirement pension promised to them.

For some of those public servants - police, fire, EMTs - dying on the job is a very real risk, sometimes for no other reason than that they happened to choose that line of work. So for people like you, I always have a question. Just exactly how much money would someone have to give you before you'd agree to be killed?

There are about 159 million workers employing 21 million public sector employees between their taxes and the deficit.

That's about 1 public for every 7.5 private employees. It does seem excessive.
01:23 AM on 08/09/2012
Some government employees are heros, some are necessary, but many are not and some are completely useless. Blanket statements such as the one Jennifer Granholm is making are almost always wrong. There are many government departments that desperately need to be trimmed or even eliminated. For starters I'd like to see the Department of Education go, it has no place in the federal government and performs, as far as is discernable, no useful function.

I don't think that most of us have a problem with government workers as people. We have a problem with a bloated government that continues to offer much better wages and benefits than those with similar private sector jobs.
01:14 PM on 08/09/2012
I must be doing something wrong, then. When I left the private sector for a government job so that I could look out for the public welfare rather than corporate interests, I took a 10% pay cut and had no retirement benefits for the first five years. I still make at least 20% less than someone in a comparable position in the private sector.

Really - you had retirement benefits in five years? It was 10 under my plan, which was still better than the other state-run plan, which required 20.

Yeah, I remember the big paycheck from my first public sector job. My salary qualified me for housing in the projects in a nearby city, but wasn't even close enough to be able to rent an apartment in the city where I worked.
11:58 PM on 08/09/2012
When I was in the private sector, my supervisor said he had a chance to work for the federal government and he regretted he hadn't done so. It was because of the benefits comparison between the public and our private job. I was a young man then. I was laid off from that company during a recession and applied for private and public sector jobs. I was called by the public sector and took my supervisor's advice. I loved my Public job and at times have made some serious sacrifices. On the private job, you can be terminated at will. As for the public job, there are laws and regulations you can't be terminated simply because someone doesn't like you. Your termination has to be in accordance with law and policy. Of course there are people that try to circumvent these procedures but when found out they can be disciplined.

This is my vote for best article of the day!

My thanks to the author and all the public employees who watch my back without me even knowing. It's sad that any powerful Americans would take you for granted.

You have my back and I have yours.

With Love from Fit and his family.

In the good old days, everyone in the Soviet Union had a government job.

So is your point:
a. That it was a perfect place to live.
b. That every government that has employees is a soviet-style dictatorship.
c. That this comment has nothing to do with anything.

Gov. Granholm, I have a question for you. Is being a governor of a state a "government job"?
09:07 PM on 08/08/2012
Of course it is! And your point...?
08:31 PM on 08/08/2012
Government employees do a lot of very important, often thankless, jobs. I am a public servant myself as, at different points in their careers, were my parents and a grandfather. The problem starts, however, when we start idolizing entire sectors of society...be they entertainers, businessmen, policemen, single mothers, priests, or what not. In the case of public servants, the governor ill serves her genuine passion when she refuses to acknowledge the legitimate concerns the average person has about what he/she sees as an overcompensated and indulged public sector (please note..I said 'perception' which is a word that does not necessarily equate to reality..check your dictionary before foaming at the mouth). For many liberals and genuine progressives-who otherwise love public employees-there is, for example, a real concern about the impunity with which unionized municipal police forces can violate the rights of individuals and face no discipline thanks to powerful unions. And no, the nonsense of 'a few bad apples..' has been used to many times to have any meaning except a sorry excuse.

Haven't you heard?

Public workers are an endangered species these days.

Unions aren't the problem. The bureaucrats who negotiate with the unions are the problem. The unions only take what is given to them.
