Dream Bigger

Posted: 05/16/2012 7:13 am

With high school graduation approaching, we are reminded of the opportunity and promise of America. But for the children brought to this country by an undocumented family member -through no fault of their own - the promise of America is broken. Many did not even know they were not born here until they went to apply for a driver's license or a part-time job. But they toiled just the same. They studied here, worked here, built a life here and yet our laws tell them, that despite all their work, they do not belong. They are caught in the middle of a system that ignores the fact that they did not commit a crime, but punishes them anyway in their pursuit of the American Dream.

It is a gut-wrenching situation for these kids. It also requires Americans to balance compassion with law-and-order. In instances like these, common sense needs to be the referee so we don't have a permanent underclass of kids caught in limbo.  Our Congress members and Senators are elected to address these issues but haven't solved this problem. There is a bill called the "Dream Act" that gives children in this situation citizenship and in turn allows them to petition for their family members to also apply for citizenship in return for two years of school or military service. Unfortunately, it is cobbled together, fraught with loopholes and has never garnered enough support on either side to pass for over 12 years. This problem is not going away and it will take strong leadership to create a workable solution that makes sense and respects our nation's laws.

Such a solution is being discussed by U.S. Senator Marco Rubio from Florida --who understands the need for common sense solutions that can actually unite Americans and Congress. The time for a new approach is now. Rubio is proposing a conservative policy alternative to the Dream Act that will allow children of undocumented parents who were brought to the U.S. at an early age - through no fault of their own - to earn a student or work visa while they attend college or serve in the military for four years, and then to apply for legal residency and go through our legal immigration system. This way they can earn legal status while at the same time following our current immigration system.

Most Americans are fair and compassionate and at the same time want our laws and borders to be respected. In a recent poll released by the Hispanic Leadership Network, by a margin of 83% to 12%, American voters support "allowing children of undocumented immigrants who have been here for years to obtain legal residency status after their honorable discharge from service in the U.S. military" and by a margin of 67% to 29%, they support "allowing children of undocumented immigrants who have been here for years to obtain legal residency if the graduate from college." Support crosses party lines and includes Republicans, Democrats and Independents.
Additionally, when presented with a choice between the current failed DREAM Act and Sen. Rubio's alternative, Americans across all sectors support Sen. Rubio's version. Both Hispanics and Independent voters prefer Rubio's 57% to 33%, while the broader electorate prefers Rubio's version 55% to 32%.

This is proof that there is a workable solution forward that can unite us all.

People of good will strongly disagree over many aspects of the immigration debate, but allowing the children of undocumented immigrants who have grown up in America the opportunity to earn legal status with a work visa if they serve honorably in the military or graduate from college is one aspect of that debate that unites most Americans across party and racial lines.
We can dream bigger and our Congress can do better. Our elected officials should make the responsible decision to work with Senator Rubio on his proposal and solve this problem. There are many dreamers depending on it.

I'm truly shocked that there is so much hatred directed at these young people who were brought to this country through no fault of their own (and this is a REPUBLICAN writing this). President Reagan would have undoubtedly supported a DREAM Act-like measure had it been presented to him, because he had the sense to realize that these kids are American at the end of the day. Further, making citizens out of them is the best thing for them and for our country in the long term. Let's please put the economic and social well-being of this nation ahead of petty politics and fear of America's rapidly changing demographic landscape.

The Dream Act would give amnesty to over 5 million illegals, the Reagan amnesty was like that and he later said it was "my biggest mistake".

Have you read any of the dream act bills?

Please do - here are the two that made it the furthest. Most are almost the same as these two.
http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-s952/text?version=is&nid=t0:is:35
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/111/s3992/text

Now you can talk intelligently about the dream act.
Please note the following issues/problems/etc that most citizens are concerned about:
1. These kids can be up to 35 years old.
2. No proof is needed to show when they came here - ALL burdens of proof are on ICE to disprove any claims made by applicants.
3. It costs them nothing - at several thousand for paperwork/backgrounds/medical/etc each X 3-5 million it will cost taxpayers hundreds of billions.
4. They can have unlimited numbers of arrests.
5. They can be gang members.
6. They can have two criminal convictions.
7. They can daisy chain their parents here immediately.
8. They can take basket weaving for two years and get a 2.0 gpa.
9. With unlimited hardship exemptions and no criteria school is only a suggestion anyway.

No thanks.

So, if we pass the “Dream Act” can we immediately deport all of the other illegal aliens, including the “Dreamer’s” parents? I strongly suspect that the supporters of this act want the other 10 to 20 million illegal alien “special cases” legalized as well.

If there ever is to be a "Dream Act" foisted upon the backs of the American people it should contain strict guidelines and benchmarks for who can apply for this amnesty and what they need to achieve in order to change their status. Most importantly, beneficiaries of the "Dream Act" should NEVER be allowed to petition for the change in status of ANY other illegal aliens. Also, the "Dream Act" should only be implemented once we have a national ID in place and once the 14th Amendment is properly interpreted to exclude citizenship from the children of undocumented aliens.

Armando, nothing good ever comes out of making second-class citizens of those who were born to immigrant parents. Take a look at Germany, for example. There are people of another ethnic background who were born in Germany and whose parents were born in Germany, but who can't claim an ethnic German background. Owing to German law, they cannot claim citizenship unless their background is German. The result is social marginalization and exclusion from the political process. These people usually end up less educated and engaged and as a result, end up burdening the system even more at the end of the day. In sum, we should leave the 14th Amendment AS IT IS and as our Founders intended it to be.

America should only confer citizenship to legal immigrants and children born of US citizen or legal immigrant parents. We should draw the line at providing automatic citizenship to children whose parents willfully and maliciously violated our national sovereignty and immigration laws.

German law is different - conferring citizenship by way of bloodlines.

Please remember that the ONLY thing in common all 7 of our previous amnesties have solved is the problem of attracting MORE illegals to this country all demanding another one.

Anyone want to take bets if any more amnesties pass the number of illegals and demands for yet another amnesty will jump up again? I'll even give you odds.

Why not dream bigger indeed.

Implement SB1070, E-Verify, employer sanctions and Secure Communities in every state with immediate effect. Give illegals 30 days to register at a police station and get a temporary visa and give them stay from prosecution to process them. Criminals get summarily deported and banned for life as do any new illegals. Problem solved and no dream act needed!

Balancing common sense and Law & Order has not been the question about the DREAM Act. That is only one of several objections Americans have to the proposition.
That it rewards the children of foreign lawbreakers who should not be here in the first place is important. More objectionable is what it lacks.
There is nothing in the bill to benefit the American people who are being asked to pay for it. It offers no rewards to American kids who do the same things.
They finish high school and college, serve in the military, obey laws. What'd they get for it? Squat.
But we would reward foreigners who our kids would be forced to compete with by giving them our most precious gift as a nation; our citizenship for them and family.
That won't work. That's not compassion. That's extortion.
The reply to "DREAMER"s might be;
"We're sorry your parents broke our laws and dragged you along. Our children are suffering too. Jobs many used to do are taken by your parents and the costs are way too high for us not to work our way through college. They haven't done us any favors and nobody gets rewarded for lawbreaking here."
This is foreign aid in our own backyard and we're not invited to the feast we're to pay for. No thanks. As long as there is nothing for Americans it won't sell.

"Nobody gets rewarded for lawbreaking here". Where are you? I am sure you are not talking about The United States. Besides those children didn't break any law.
01:20 AM on 05/19/2012
If they do not register for the draft and they are male between 18 and 25 they have committed a felony. Thus can be deported as a criminal. If they work here, they have committed a FEDERAL crime in doing so. Virtually every coiuntry on earth has laws that are a lot more harsh on those who do things like that. So YES they are criminals once they are 18.

Chief Johnson2...I have come to the conclusion..after I read most of your comments. You must be an illegal immigrant..or you harbor an illegal immigrant..no other comments for you...done with you!!!!!

Why are you citing a poll conducted by the "Hispanic Leadership Network" as a credible source ?

You are supposed to quote polls that are non-biased and non-partisan.

You might as well said "La Raza thinks we should have no border, nor any rules on coming to the US from Mexico and Latin America."

Jennifer, they knew the risks coming here illegally. Stop acting like people had no clue. If the parents had no problem having their kids living in the shadows, then I have no problem with it.

I can only imagine how the conversation went...

"Mommy, why are those men in green uniforms chasing us ?"

"Don't worry mijo, they are the newest Disney characters..."

Dude, I don't care. We don't reward illegal behavior, maybe these kids should go yell at their parents for a change.

Let is be known, there is no amnesty coming, so don't bother waiting it out. ICE will get you, eventually.

How can anyone prefer Rubio's version when it hasn't been presented yet?

That is the problem with most people, they make up their minds before presented with facts.
