Obama Lacks a Suitable Replacement for McChrystal

What's Your Reaction:

In my opinion General McChrystal will survive this ordeal not because he is the best man for the job but because he is the only man for the job. Discussion around the campfire here in Afghanistan has centered around who would be a suitable replacement for McChrystal and the only name that really holds any water is Lt. General David Rodriguez who came to Afghanistan at the same time as McChrystal to run the ISAF Joint Command (ICJ). The IJC is the operational arm of the coalition here, devoted to running the day to day operations of the war. While General Rodriguez could assume control of ISAF without a large learning curve, this would cause and even larger problem by leaving the positional of operational commander vacant at the height of the deadliest fighting season seen in the past 9 years of the war.

The other four names being floated in the press as possible replacements are all decorated soldiers but not one of them has the background or institutional knowledge required to assume command of a war as complicated as this one.

General James Mattis:
General Mattis is currently Commander of Joint Forces Command. Talk about someone with a past for making outrageous comments to the press. General Mattis is also a marine which will likely disqualify him from the top spot in Afghanistan. The Marine Corps has been the slowest to adopt Counterinsurgency practices, instead preferring to rely on the same battle tested tactics that brought them victory in Fallujah.

LT. General Allen:
As deputy commander of Centcom, General Allen would have a decent understanding of ongoing operations in Afghanistan but there would still be a significant learning curve involved if he were to assume command in Afghanistan. Furthermore, he is a marine and as I mentioned earlier the marine's do not have the best reputation when it comes to counterinsurgency practices.

General Martin Dempsey:
General Dempsey has Iraq experience but Iraq is not Afghanistan. Yes it is true that General McChrystal came to Afghanistan after fighting in Iraq for several years, however, as a Special Forces Commander he had the advantage of being well versed in COIN principles whereas General Dempsey is not.

Navy Adm. James Stavridis:
Is an intelligent man and has proven himself as a skilled commander of both SOUTHCOM and as Supreme Allied Commander-Europe (SACEUR). However, he has very little experience with the conflict in Afghanistan and has had zero experience implementing COIN in the field. Furthermore, the Army represents the vast majority of the troops currently fighting on the ground here in Afghanistan and as a result any successor to McChrystal would have to come from the ground forces, most likely the Army.

Afghanistan the graveyard not only of empires but also of generals (or at least of their careers).
Who where the last Russian and British commanding generals in this godforsaken part of the world?

When lobbying for someone it is easy to forget an obvious best choice... The Pres is on top of it.

based on the requisite skill sets, Ted Bundy or Albert DeSalvo come to mind.

You could replace McChrystal with a genetically modified lifeform composed of the DNA of U.S. Grant, Dwight Eisenhower, and Alexander the Great and it wouldn't matter. The war in Afghanistan is over. The United States lost. The only question is how much more blood and money will be wasted before that truth is acknowledged.

The comment on General Mattis is unfounded. Practically and historically speaking, Marines invented counterinsurgency operations and have executed them quite well in the past. The Marines' "Small Wars Manual," dating back to 1940, is still a key reference for operating in "nation building" and security operations. It's also important to note that even in counter-insurgency operations there's a place for major combat operations; it's all situationally dependent. And Marines are, and have always been, the quickest of the services to adapt to the military situation. General Mattis is far from a one-trick pony. Obama selected General Patraeus to go in for benched McChrystal, but if he'd chosen Mattis he'd have done well. There's also some irony in President Obama naming General Petraeus as McChrystal's replacement. As the article correctly notes, General Patraeus was McChrystal's direct boss. So what kind of leadership, oversight, etc., was he exercising over McChrystal? Why didn't Patraeus know the Stone article was coming off, the attitudes and opinions of McChrystal and his subordinates, etc.? Less for what he specifically said than for his "command climate," McChrystal probably needed to go. But in the ethereal world of the 4-stars, I can't believe Patraeus didn't know what was going on, and he should have personally reined in his subordinate 4-star.

Off-topic, but whoever edited this article needs to get his glasses checked. I know in the age of the internet where speed trumps quality it is difficult to catch the errors, but I had to read this sentence three times to make any sense of it. Guess I'm just stoopid.

"While General Rodriguez could assume control of ISAF without a large learning curve, this would cause and even larger problem by leaving the positional of operational commander vacant at the height of the deadliest fighting season seen in the past 9 years of the war."

LOL...yeah, let's argue about replacements. One way or the other, we will leave Afghanistan with our tail between our legs, just like the Soviets did--they don't call Afghanistan the "Graveyard of Empires" for nothing. Which means that we can continue to pour hundreds of billions of dollars down the toilet there every year, or we can slap ourselves in the head and say, "You know, even though there are countless examples throughout history that demonstrate that sending in a standing army to fight a guerilla war DOES NOT WORK, we 'exceptional' Americans in our infinite wisdom decided to do it anyway--and TWICE in one decade, to boot! LOL! We sure are stupid (although since warfare is the only thing we export anymore, it's kind of understandable), but maybe we can redeem ourselves by ending both wars (in defeat), saving a couple of trillion dollars, and working to shore up what's left of our completely broken economy."

It's our choice, folks...but really, who am I kidding? OF COURSE we'll continue to dump trillions of dollars down the toilet! This is America! We're lazy, fat, dumb and weak--what do you expect us to do?

The U.S. Military does not focus around ‘only one person able to do or get the job/mission done’……. If they did it would be a setup for ‘failure’..

You are incorrect…. There are several others that could and would get the job done in Afghanistan…your list are just the initial obvious choices…..
