Jackson, Mississippi - The Mississippi legislature today approved a hotly contested piece of legislation that legalizes marriage between two people with the same father. Governor Haley Barbour signed the legislation late this afternoon, making Mississippi the first state to legalize marriage between a brother and sister.
"This is about equality, and this is about progress, in a way," Mr. Barbour said after signing the bill. "Not in terms of evolution, maybe, but progress nonetheless. A brother and a sister who love one another and want to form a committed relationship, they should have the opportunities and benefits that are granted to everybody else. It's not their fault they fell in love with the person who grew up down the hall from them."
The legislation explicitly forbids marriage between two siblings of the same sex. Governor Barbour said that would have been taking the bill too far.
"Marriage, in my view, is a sacred sacrament between a man and a woman," he said. "Not a man and a man, or a woman and a woman. A man and a woman, who may or may not be related."
Asked if he thinks married couples who are also related will face added difficulty in their marriages, Barbour said, "Difficulty? No. If anything, I think it'll be easier for them. Think about how much they have in common already."

You know, it was actually a concern of mine that it might be read as some kind of odd support for these insane right-wing theories about gay marriage. I was trying to point up the absurdity of what people, especially conservatives, are okay with, while not being okay with gay marriage. But I hate that it might be read as some kind of negative comment about gay marriage. Didn't intend it that way.
Well, it wouldn't be surprising if there were such confusion since this article was put under the "gay marriage" topic. For people subscribed to the feed, this topic comes up even though it's only tangentially related to same-sex marriage.
That said, I still found the story interesting in light of Mississippi being such a socially conservative State and arguments same-sex marriage opponents have been making referencing incest.
Satire like this is decidedly unhelpful when our opponents are ignorant enough to take it as gospel truth and say "you see? Told ya it was a slippery slope!"
this is a joke right? truth is stranger than fiction so you never know...
Hmmm. It seems that some of the arguments against SSM might not be so ridiculous after all. Opponents were claiming that polygamy, polyandry, group marriages, fathers marrying daughters, sons marrying mothers, i.e incest would be next. If brothers are now able to marry sister, maybe the other scenarios will happen as well.
Those arguments are still ridiculous. The idea is that there would be a cascade effect where legalizing same-sex marriage leads to a cascade effect where incest, polygamy, relationships between a child and an adult with a vast age difference, and bestiality are subsequently legalized.
In the case of Mississippi, incest was just legalized despite a State constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, thus, reinforcing the invalidity of that argument. If anything, this law indicates that you can have legalized incest without same-sex marriage and vice versa and that the two issues are not intertwined.
