Dear Mrs. Obama,

It seems as if everyone who cares about your husband is talking at him.

It doesn't seem as if he hears any of us.

But everything we know about your relationship suggests that he does listen to you.

So, with a sense of distress bordering on urgency, I'm using this public forum to urge you to pass on as much of this as you agree with.

My concern: For two years now, we have watched President Obama reach across the aisle, only to have his hand slapped away.

And yet he seems intent on continuing an approach that has damaged his administration and now has him cast, in the eyes of many, as weak, risk-averse and unworthy of respect.

Mrs. Obama, your husband has a better chance of killing Osama bin Laden than he does of forging a working partnership with John Boehner.

I know you've been busy with motherhood and your own projects, but even if you lived under a rock, you'd know this: You can't collaborate with people whose goal is to make you a one-term president. And it's not like it's a secret that the Republicans plan to destroy your husband's presidency -- when Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was asked about the Republican agenda after the midterm elections, he said, "The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president." If that means blocking every bit of legislation proposed by the president or even shutting down the government, they'll do it.

But that's just the surface opposition. What's just as troubling are the Republicans' minions on the extreme right. Their aim, from the beginning, has been to de-legitimize the president. Secret Muslim, not born here, Socialist -- you've watched your husband endure this onslaught. Sometimes he makes a joke of it. Which is smart, because to see these accusations clearly is to see the racism bubbling just under the surface.

Over in my America -- progressive, white, educated, not yet unemployed -- we are all but begging for the president to show some anger. I'm sure the election results did more than dismay and annoy him. But to watch him at that post-election press conference, you'd have thought the problem was an inferior crumpet served with his tea.

"No drama Obama" was fine for a while. But that, we were told, was merely how he managed the bumps and ruts of the campaign. At the podium, he was all about "Fired up! Ready to go!" And we were. We dug deeper in our pockets, made more phone calls, bought enough t-shirts to keep our kids in nightshirts for the rest of our lives, and we took that campaign out for quite a spin, didn't we? It felt great. I miss that. We all do.

And now, on the blogs I read and in dinner conversations, there's a sense that we were hoodwinked. We think your husband negotiates with himself and then presents diluted proposals to Republicans so they can be further watered down -- all in the name of doing things differently in Washington. Yes, we've got an historic health-care bill, but it's one that the insurance companies actually like. Sure, the president has talked tough about Wall Street, but he not only doesn't seem to want a single high-level banker to be indicted, he's willing to sit on the sidelines as corrupt banks evict homeowners whose houses have been illegally repossessed.

Why spare you the rest of the disappointments? Your husband was going to call a halt to our ruinous Mideast wars, but now it looks like the conflict in Afghanistan will end -- regardless of what the president has decided --- when General Petraeus says it does. As a candidate, your husband was clear about gays in the military; as president, his position on Don't Ask Don't Tell is "evolving." His administration's record on constitutional issues would delight Bush and Cheney and get a failing grade from sometime constitutional law professor named Obama. I have no idea where the president really stands on tax cuts for the rich. And, most baffling of all, he is willing to link the invented-by-Republicans deficit "crisis" to the even less relevant Social Security "crisis" instead of grappling with a real crisis -- unemployment.

(This isn't why I'm writing to you, but I do want to point out that disrespect flows in all directions these days. The Republicans and the Tea Party people disrespect the president, for sure. But also, the president disrespects a large section of the people who got him his job. Which, I guess, is understandable. What are we gonna do -- campaign for Mitt Romney?)

Philip Slater, the great sociologist, noted that "the first cure for illusion is despair." I'm sure I'm not the only one of your husband's admirers who's been there. But despair gets old fast. You look for something you can do to get the blood pumping, so you're not just the target of other people's dark plans -- and then you feel the surge of energy that's the direct product of a righteous anger. Take America back? You betcha. Where do we start?

Well, just for old time's sake, why not start with a president who's a leader. Who's got a vision that doesn't have a sell-by date of 2012. Who doesn't kid himself that today's enemies can be tomorrow's friends. Who isn't afraid to show his feelings. Who's strong enough to ask for help.

A few years ago, when I first started paying attention to your husband, I thought of him in the words George Orwell used to describe Charles Dickens -- not the actual Dickens, but the essential man, the man beneath the skin. Orwell wrote:

I see a face that is not quite the face of Dickens's photographs, though it resembles it. It is the face of a man of about forty, with a small beard and a high colour. He is laughing, with a touch of anger in his laughter, but no triumph, no malignity. It is the face of a man who is always fighting against something, but who fights in the open and is not frightened, the face of a man who is generously angry -- in other words, of a nineteenth-century liberal, a free intelligence, a type hated with equal hatred by all the smelly little orthodoxies which are now contending for our souls.

Is that a plausible description of your husband? I don't know anymore. But you do. And if anyone has the key to inspiring him, you're the one.

My bet's on you.

Cordially,

Jesse Kornbluth

Hey, if the guy can't listen to what his supporters have been asking for since he has been in office, he should not be in office. That would mean he is grossly unqualified to be in that seat. Personally, I cannot understand how huge a fool he is to have chosen the ass backwards agenda he and his party chose, (a health care fiasco rather than being focused entirely on joblessness), esclalating a war profiteering disaster in Afghanistan again against the will of the majority of Americans. I could continue, practically everything he has done has been ill timed and not enough. Perhaps he is simply not presidential material. It takes more, far more, than being able to give a good speech. He seems detached from having to do anything else but speeches.

What gushing pablum -- hardly incisive, hardly worth reading. The Republicans are dismantling Obama's legacy, and Jesse Kornbluth is wrought up over jobs. Michael Moore's message is infinitely more intelligent -- Use the Lame Duck Session to pass some real legislation then start defining yourself as a fighter in 2011 for a comeback in 2012.

If the repubs are dismantling his so called legacy, they are getting an awful lot of help from him and his cowardly party.

>>>What are we gonna do -- campaign for Mitt Romney?>>>

Why don't you try taking a page from the Tea Partiers' playbook? Last I checked, they and their supporters were taking RINO's and "establishment" Republicans out in the primaries and running their own people. And, today, every member of the Republican congress who doesn't cast votes to the satisfaction of said Tea Partiers and their supporters knows that he/she runs the risk of meeting the same fate as Bennett and Castle when they're up for reelection.

Meanwhile, all liberals ever do is reelect the same pols who screwed them, thinking that somehow they're not gonna get screwed all over again. You want Obama to perform for you? Try getting off your butts, like the Tea Partiers did, and hit the streets with signs that say "Anybody but Obama in 2012." See how fast he starts paying attention to his base.

Nice try. The problem is that this president is, as Jon Stewart put it, a functionary, not a visionary. Which has the related problem of not being able to see what is obvious to the rest of us: his approach isn't working. Just because we want him to be a leader doesn't mean he's capable of it, as he's proved again and again and again. So sadly, we have the worst president in history followed by a mediocrity, at a time when we needed a truly great leader.

One cannot be a leader when dealing with a people who are unwilling to be lead.

This president's problem is that he is dealing with a political climate that is more invested in being "right" and winning arguments, than it is in actually addressing problems.

Watching Liberals and Conservatives in the Culture War is like watching a husband and wife shamelessly fight in front of their kids.

Michelle the First Fashion Lady, likes to holiday with royalty and take her best friends to 5 star hotels. She did an appeal for Haiti wearing an expensive Pearl necklace. Like Barak she is far to the right of most of the grassroots Democrats and others who believed his lies of 2008.

Simply he told us he was different and went straight to work being exactly the same as all the other rotten presidents we have had. He is richer and happier while America falls into despair. His answer is to abuse those he lied to.

Michelle earned good money in the rotten Health Care system the Democrats and her husband worked so hard to preserve by not bringing in a Public Option.

No they do not care, like Clinton it's all about the tax free Foundation and the massive profits awaiting in retirement. He fooled us but he is better than any Republican, at least we got nearly nothing for all our cash and support. With Obama nothing is always better than nothing.

Yet I'll vote for him in 2012 but I will not cheer and I will not support him with cash. He has my vote and I detest him..that's more than enough.

If fame hasn't corrupted the President's wife, I would venture that she would appreciate a letter that was clear, concise and to the point.  The Writer should have posed questions for Mrs Michele Obama to ask her duplicious husband.  First, when are you going to stop pandering to plutocracy and open the banks to investigation of fraud and cover-up of fraud?  Second, when are you going to propose a policy for reindustrialization and economic growth?  Third, when are you going to ask the Congress to provide jobs and civic education for 30 million Americans, many who have never worked a day in their lives?  Last, when are you going to openly invite ordinary Americans to advise in the governance of this great Nation?

Or to put it more simply: "Hey, Michelle, tell your man to grow a pair."

Of course, if he has to be told, he probably isn't capable of doing it ...

Michelle,
Allow me to add to Jesse's letter.

http://www.change.org/actions/view/eliminate_capitalistic-military_regime I'm sure Barack have told you about is designed to get him to do the constitutionally correct thing. Please read it and see if it isn't the safest thing for your family. I actually thought, and said, you had done what is required to prevent Barack from being incarcerated when you went on the 10 day eastern trip, maybe I erred, I don't know if you've. Although doing it will land him in prison, it's the only option available with the constitution on one side and Bilderburg Group on the other. Advise him to do it.

To Jesse's *Take America back? You betcha. Where do we start?* I want to say that's the only way I see possible. Other attempts will only end in a civil war, I believe the Bilderburgs want to be able to declare "Marshal Law" and replace the Constitution with THEIR Patriot Act to begin the New World Order.

Washington said "let us raise a standard only the wise and honest can repair..." and I'm that wise and honest, also willing to take his place for what I believe Bilderburgs have in mind for him. Convince him, Mechelle, to do as the link suggests and take his chances in a court of law, there may be a very slim chance he will not meet discarnating for treason.

Faced with the unsolveable puzzle called the Gordian Knot, Alexander drew his sword and slashed it in two. Zeus was pleased and granted him many victories in battle. That's the message, distilled to its essence. Sometimes the solution lies outside of the stated context. Sometimes it takes bold vision and bold action to win the day. Had Alexander hired a committee of professional knot-untanglers to study the knot and come up with a list of probable solutions, it might eventualy have been unraveled but its doubtful that the ultimate result would have been the same. The world rewards intelligent audacity. Obama of all people should know that, it was a key part of his message. Audacity and hope.

Well done, Jesse. One has to wonder if Michelle has passed on the very same words/messages you speak of. She cannot be blind to the criticisms that started as a snowball and now appear as an avalanche. The negative momentum facing this president, from his own party and independents, is palpable and disturbing. And yet it is gaining strength toward the undoing of this man and his presidency. Please Michelle, ask your husband to look deep inside his heart and know that he has the will and fight to do what Americans expect of him; to fight without compromise.

So which of the thousands of voices out here in the news media and the blogosphere should the President listen to? Maybe everyone should stop giving their advise and simply give support. It would have been great if all of these voices had spoken up during the Bush years.

I think this article is an excellent one. I am a gay liberal Democrat who is among the many critical of the President. I was far harder on President Bush on my easiest day of criticism than I have been on President Obama on my harshest day of criticism. President Bush took plenty of criticism and deserved it. President Obama wanted and campaigned for the office and is subject to criticism, especially when promises are not kept, signals are mixed, or decision are in error. To his credit, the President does not seem to mind the criticism. But, he also sometimes seems not to understand or incorporate it. That's the beauty of this article. The First Lady is not just charming, she is also intelligent and sensitive. Perhaps the best way to get through to him is through her. It is certainly worth a try!
