Dear Mr. President: Will You Please Speak Up About Police Assaulting Protesters On College Campuses?

Posted: 11/19/11 03:32 PM ET

Dear Mr. President,

I know you're halfway around the world, doing very important things, but we've having some trouble here at home that your staff may not have told you about.

It's the police --- especially the police at the University of California, Davis.

In this video --- it's long, but you only need to watch the first minute or two --- a policeman walks up to seated protesters and, at close range, covers them in a cloud of pepper spray. [Huffington Post has a more complete account here.]

Let me set aside the distressing irony that protesters in, say, Tahrir Square in Cairo last spring were, in the main, better treated by repressive authorities than protesters on a California campus.

Let me just talk politics.

Specifically, this: What would I do if I were President and running for re-election?

Let me go a bit further...

What would I do if I were running for re-election and I knew the Republicans were mounting a nationwide campaign to disenfranchise as many minority voters as possible?

What would I do if I were running for re-election and knew that many of my core supporters in 2008 felt disrespected and ignored by my Administration?

And, finally, what would I do if I were running for re-election and I had even the vaguest idea how many kids go to college and how many families back home were worrying about them --- and how many of those kids and parents considered themselves Democrats?

In that situation, I think --- again, I'm just making a political calculation here --- I'd take the opportunity to speak out about what happened at UC Davis.

I'd say something like this:

My fellow Americans:

I'm out of the country, dealing with some thorny issues in Asia, but I have seen the video of students demonstrating peacefully at the Davis campus of the University of California and police blanketing them in pepper spray.

I don't want to get into the particulars of this incident.

I do want to affirm some principles that may be getting lost in our national conversation.

1) Americans have an absolute right to assemble and present their grievances.

2) The authorities have an obligation to guarantee public safety.

3) That obligation may include arresting demonstrators who are violating the law.

4) The authorities must respect the rights of non-violent demonstrators.

This isn't rocket science. It's not even politics. It's Democracy 101, and I hope we'll see more of it --- and fewer videos like this.

Thank you.

Mr. President, making a short speech like this should not be a tough call.

Consider: Forbes Magazine --- Forbes! --- has condemned the police.

Do you really want to be the last to speak up?

Or is it your intent to say nothing?

There comes a time, sir, when we must stand up and be counted --- or have our silence counted as its own kind of speech.

I'm sure there are many Americans --- not just college kids, their parents and their professors --- who would be grateful if you would remind us all of the right to assemble peacefully.

Some, perhaps, might even see that as a reason to vote for you.

Sincerely,

Jesse Kornbluth

I think the less we hear from Obama, the better off we'll be. He is, of course, also part of the problem that is being protested.

I can handle the truth. Now let's talk about you.

Well, actually, that's true. He doesn't get off scot free. But there are places where the President should be heard, and this is one of them. Obama might have a bit of a problem walking through an Occupy site in rags with his fist in the air. But he should probably say something about this.

Obama needed a serious foot-from-mouth extraction when he intervened on behalf of his friend Professor Gates in a case in which he knew nothing about. Hopefully he will not make the same mistake again.

Dear Mr. President:
As a police officer who have been working for the state for almost 20 years can you please speak up about:
1. Crowds throwing urine and feces on my fellow officers
2. Anarchists within protest crowds who are creating risks for everyone.
3. Politicians who have stole and mismanaged our pension funds
4. The Republicans and Democrats who are privitizing parts of our jobs, increasing our day to day safety.
5. And last, commentators who use "Forbes" magazine as a credible source for confirming police brutality.

Gee, isn't people who read "Forbes", and follow it's principals part of the problem Kornbluth? But then again I'm neither the left arm or right arm of the elite.

The problem is, first, Obama would speak the truth about the abominable police behavior (I know, not a strong enough word), then the police would express outrage. Obama would then invite the pepper sprayers to Washington to have a beer, and once again, the bad ones win. Can't anyone stand up and not only speak the truth, but then stand behind their words even following faux, right wing feigned outrage. Obviously not this guy, and not this time, either. Let freedom ring, but that ain't gonna be coming from the Liberty Bell... 'cause, yeah, that one's been cracked for some time now.

Did anyone ever wonder how long it would take from the Military being allowed, if not encouraged, to torture Foreigners, until that same unconstitutional and unconscionable torture would be used on peaceful law abiding American Progressives?

Radicals like Bachmann are already saying "terrorists" have no rights, even American ones. How long do you think it will be until political dissenters will be categorized in a similar manner?

since OWS started Obama has been notably silent on police tactics, probably so as not to stir controversy like the harvard professor incident again and also I think homeland security, the fbi, and the military have been analyzing and advising him on this as it is a type of disruption by the masses.

Please support our whitehouse.gov petition urging Obama to address this police violence: bitly.com/uuq7pN

With 25,000 signatures, the White House guarantees a response to the petition.

I absolutely agree with the author. Obama should issue a statement concerning what is going on at California campuses. In fairness though, he does have a tremendous amount on his plate but even so, a statement from him could have tremendous impact.

Why is #4 a leap? You don't believe in the 1st Amendment?

Isn't it interesting that when the police in the Ivy League college town (Harvard? I can't remember) arrested one older gentleman who was a professor after mistaking him for a burglar, that Obama was so outraged that he went on national television and said the police behaved "stupidly," later regretting his statement and having the gentleman and the policeman both to the White House for a beer? But when leagues of cops crack down on the protesters who have legitimate reasons to see little hope for the future, he is completely silent? I am so disappointed in him. Surely after the horrendous behavior of the police at UC Davis Obama will finally break his silence!

All parents of college applicants must now ask recruiters "Does your campus police force use pepper spray, or baton beatings to subdue outspoken students? Or do your prefer tasers?". Never thought I'd see the day but if I was paying my kid's tuition and the cops came along and beat them up or sprayed them, the gloves would come off very quickly, and Obama as the father of two would not be silent on this if he was not a complete and utter corporate lackey. It would be flattery at this point to only call him out as a coward.

Please - Obama couldn't care less about college students until its time for them to vote for him and work on his campaign. He's steadfastly fought against even basic reforms that would make substantial differences in the lives of college students (e.g. repealing the 2005 law that makes student loan debt legally the same as tax fraud penalties; repealing laws that disqualify kids who were convicted of marijuana possession, but not alcohol possession, from federal student loans; etc). I'm going to be astonished if I see anyone under 30 vote for him.
01:10 PM on 11/21/2011
Obama did reform the student loan program for the better, getting rid of corrupt middle men. It was a commonsensical reform that is one of the few good things to come out of the Obama presidency.

Ha! Not even close.  What he did was double down on outrageous Bush era repayment programs and incentive reckless lending.  Why do you think we've seen such an explosion in for-profit colleges?

Oh, please....."assault" is a crime (a state law crime), and if cops are guilty of it, the local legal system is the appropriate one to handle it -- like any local crime. (And yes, if they're corrupt and fail to prosecute their own, then the local office of the US attorney get involved).

We don't need POTUS to be handing out report cards on local police actions

This is a widespread civil liberties issue and he needs to take a stand. It's got nothing to do with who issues citations.
