America's Moms Are Watching U.S. Senate: Pass the Safe Chemicals Act!

Posted: 11/15/11 10:17 PM ET

Thursday is a big -- and long overdue -- day. And American moms, like me, will be tuned in and watching.

Usually, hearings in Congress get little attention from the general public, let alone busy moms. But this Thursday is a big day for those of us who care about protecting American families from toxic chemicals.

The U.S. Senate will be holding a hearing on "The Safe Chemicals Act," a bill sponsored by Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ). The bill, a much-needed overhaul of our antiquated laws, will help us all protect our families from toxic chemicals.

I just gave birth to my second child, and I can tell you that there is no stronger instinct for a mom then wanting to protect her kids and keep them safe. My children have changed my life in wonderful ways. They've brought me tremendous joy. They've also made me conscious of every product I buy, from toys to mattresses to cleaning products. I hope that the decisions I make will shield my children from harm. Yet today, it's impossible to be sure. As parents, we just don't have the information we need to keep our kids safe from toxic chemicals in many household products.

Many moms and dads believe that our government is making sure there aren't toxic chemicals in our products. And for a long time, I thought the same thing.

However, nothing could be further from the truth. It is still legal to use lead, mercury, asbestos and formaldehyde in many common household products. Even worse, there are thousands of other chemicals in use that have never been tested for safety at all!

We require all kinds of companies to make sure that their products are safe before they're sold, from food to pharmaceuticals to pickup trucks. And yet there is no requirement that the chemicals used in consumer products be tested for safety, even if they're used in products made for children.

Would you give your child medicine that hadn't been tested to make sure it was safe?

Parents are often shocked to find out that there are dangerous chemicals in their child's plastic baby bottles, toys, baby soap, shower curtains, and even in their crib mattresses. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

That's why parents are demanding action from Congress now. That's why we need the Safe Chemicals Act.

I am hopeful that members of both parties will see this as an issue of basic common sense -- for the health of their kids and grandkids and those of their constituents. I believe they will do the right thing. And I am encouraged by bipartisan efforts to make progress on this issue. Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma, the lead Republican on the committee hearing this bill, has joined with Senator Lautenberg to seek common ground on this issue.

I hope the companies that make chemicals and household products will step up, too, and become partners in passing this important legislation. The Safe Chemicals Act will enhance their brands and their businesses, and, most importantly, serve their customers well -- especially their tiniest ones.

Moms (and dads!) across the country are busy people. They are trying to raise their kids and support their families. But on Thursday, lots of us moms will be watching online on behalf of parents across the country.

Every kid has the right to be safe in her home. Every mom has the right to know that the products she buys for her child are free of toxic chemicals.

We have hope and faith in our political system to fix this problem, and we are counting on our U.S. Senators to get it done. For the sake of our kids, do not let us down.

For more information and to join the campaign go to the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families website www.saferchemicals.org or Facebook page. Click here to call your U.S. Senator today and ask them to support The Safe Chemicals Act of 2011.

It's impossible for the state to control every single chemical producer. It's impossible to control every single toy factory. It's impossible and unthinkable to control every imported toy or product. I suggest moms and dads to take a few more minutes when shopping. You can't know what kind of chemicals that toy plastic was made with? Buy branded ones. And if not even those are safe... Well then the US is a very retarded - in this subject - country. There are EU (european) standards that regulate the quality and safety of every product in Europe. Nothing's perfect, obviously: if some company wants to "circle" the system, they just need to print the EU norm number. But like I said, branded products are by far the safest.
Having said that... When we all were growing up there were thousands of much more dangerous materials everywhere and we're all still here.
Having said that as well... you go girl! lol (it wouldn't be me if I didn't mess this up)

The Safe Chemical Act should be amended to cancel the Cheney Rule that keeps secret items in the chemical stew used in fracking liquids!

It's nice that Jessica Alba is paying attention to this very important issue, but one has to wonder if she's the best possible messenger....

To all those who think this would mean "bureaucrats" regulating your child's health, I suggest you look at your boss at work, or your child's school principal. People work hard, gain experience, and are responsible for using their hard earned skills and experience to improve something - it could be your child's school curriculum, or the way a company does business, or in this case, scientists, who I can assure you have been studying their subject for years and years and paid next to nothing to do so, will be advising Americans on their findings. Society cannot move forward if we do not come together as a group and gain advice from the people who are experts in their field. There is a reason that you have electricity and running water in your home, and are not living in a tent in a field. That is because society can collaborate on big projects, infrastructure (getting the electricity and water to your house, and remove the sewage, for example), and yes, also scientific advances. Stop blaming 'big government' for everything. Instead, get involved in local politics and demand that those elected be experts - smart, savvy, experienced and motivated to truly make a difference in the world.

I really don't want bureaucrats to decide what's best for me and my children. Furthermore, this country is flat broke. There's nothing in the constitution about the federal government regulating chemicals in products. We can't afford all these regulations anymore.

Tell you what, Jessica, if you start a group that petitions businesses to voluntarily give us the information the guns in Washington, I'll join it and even contribute money to it. If businesses understand that consumers are more likely to buy their products if they advertise this information, they will have an incentive to do it. That's far lest costly for us tax payers than to hire more guns to create and enforce more laws.

Ignorant people like you are a big part of the problem. This issue is a question of who's paying for the science, because science can be just as corrupt as anything else. "Bureaucrats" have nothing to do with this, unless you're mistakenly calling legislators bureacrats.

In the 100 years after the start of the industrial revolution, if chemical producers had waited 70 years to see the lifelong effects on people of the chemicals being used before turning them into or using them in useful products....we wouldn't have become a superpower and probably would have been taken over by some other country by now. We ALL live in and have benefited from our capitalist, materialist, consumer society. I'm all for more stringent rules..but if those making the rules don't understand chemistry...they could do more harm than good. The real answer is going to come from chemists and scientists who can come up with cleaner alternatives that won't bankrupt us. You want to really make a change...take a chemistry class, then start a scholarship fund for more scientists and engineers who want to focus on green chemistry. Maybe the next movie you make you can donate the 10 million you get and stop pretending you are helping, to make yourself feel better, by jumping on a bandwagon

It's called doing your homework and reading the labels; good gosh Jessica, at least take a little responsibility for yourself and chlildren!

Then you only have control over the chemicals you personally use, but kids spend most of their waking days in schools, not their homes
01:15 PM on 11/20/2011
My fear is congress splitting the difference between big-chem lobbyists and uninformed hysteria. In the end, small formulators will be crushed while products become no safer - just more expensive.

Hi Jess,

Way to step up and put yourself out there in support of children and our future environment. :) It's easy to be cynical these days when there is so much chaos and illegal/immoral activity going on around. Hope, faith and some action on our part can make a diffference. Change.org is proving that daily. Keep fighting the good fight and know your efforts will be rewarded. :) Your appreciated!

I wonder when they will look at the list of toxic chemicals currently in vaccines, such as mercury (thimerosal, still in most flu shots), aluminum (the adjuvant used in most acellular vaccines), formaldehyde, etc...

Children get upwards of 36 vaccines before they are 2 years old. Do you know what is in all those shots?

Did you also know that both the pharmaceutical industry and the doctors have blanket immunity regarding those shots? That if your child has a severe reaction to one (not that you could tell which one, as they give several shots at each visit), you CANNOT sue the manufacturer, nor the doctor?

It's not just a case of having a "severe reaction". Many things have mild but lifelong adverse effects that never get reported. I have had a sore arm for 4 years since my vaccination. Someone told me that they have not been able to use their arm quite the same since their vaccination. But these things will never be reported. You have to practically drop dead immediately to get a report of a reaction.

A major chemical that is never mentioned in these articles is perfume and air fresheners. These products are made from petrochemicals and have no safety testing. I think many peoples main exposure to toxic chemicals is from fragrances in the home and workplace.

Don't you know that the thimerosal has been taken out of vaccines YEARS ago? Don't you know that the British doctor who started that autism scare has lost his medical license for fraudulent claims that started the whole thing?

Thimerosal was never "taken out" of vaccines. Most pediatric vaccines have been manufactured without thimerosal for several years, BUT the flu shot continues to be primarily available in a thimerosal-preserved version--and that version is given to pregnant women, to all children under the age of 3, and to anyone who doesn't know enough to ask for the (more expensive) thimerosal-free version.

In addition, adult vaccines continue to be preserved with thimerosal.

Vaccine manufacturers continue to make thimerosal-preserved pediatric vaccines, which they sell to 3rd world countries.

Autism has been linked with vaccines since before "the British Doctor" hit the news. The US "vaccine court" has admitted and compensated 1400 cases of vaccine-induced brain damage--many of which cases include autism.

I thought we were supposed to be shrinking the size of government, not expanding it!
01:32 PM on 11/20/2011
The notion of a smaller government is nice, however we have SERIOUS issues in this country. It would seem that the people who run these companies care more about making a profit than doing good business to become profitable both materially and spiritually.

I'm not a proponent of big government but it seems that there is a need for someone to provide oversight in order to keep the balance. At some point you have to sacrifice to effect change. That's been proven time and again for thousands of years. This moment in time is no different.

Not enough emphasis on parenting "properly" and not enough accountability = chaos and we are damn close.

Actually you are right, sort of, but also terribly wrong. A chemical is just a substance, so even water is a chemical. Every substance, or chemical, has a safe range and a danger range. You can die from drinking too much water, taking in too much salt, even from too much food. Some of the vitamins, essential to health, are known to be poisonous at high enough levels. You have let chemical ignorance scare you. We are all walking, talking bags of chemicals, including water, hormones, salts, fats, proteins, amino acids, minerals, the whole mix. Even things formerly thought to be ONLY poisons have been found to be necessary for good health. Selenium is a good example of that. More than a tiny trace is deadly, but that tiny trace is essential. Chemist, Ph.D.
