Gadgets For Women Gone Wrong: Tech Companies Take Note

Posted: 01/11/2012 3:59 pm

Note to tech companies: Before you come out with a special pink phone or tablet to specially market to the female "niche" portion of your demographic, you may want to consider this: Contrary to stereotypes, women buy more tech products than men and may even constitute the majority of your customers, according to a recent survey.

On Monday HSN announced the results of a survey by the international research firm Parks Associates that asked 2,000 adults about purchases they wanted to make before 2012. The results showed women outstripped men in their interest in owning electronics, with 18 percent of women planning on buying a tablet before 2012 (compared to 15 percent of men), 20 percent of women wanted a laptop (only 14 percent of men did) and 20 percent of women planning on purchasing smartphones -- compared to 17 percent of men, Mashable reports.

The results aren't surprising for several reasons. It's a well-publicized fact that women make 85 percent of purchasing decisions in American households. Women are a force to be reckoned with on a global scale as well: Michael J. Silverstein and Kate Sayre of Boston Consulting Group, writing in The Harvard Business Review in 2009, contended that "women represent a growth market bigger than China and India combined -- more than twice as big, in fact." Silverstein and Sayre also argued that to ignore or misread this demographic is a huge mistake, recalling the failed attempt by the computer manufacturer Dell to launch "Della," a website conspicuous for the preponderance of pink tech products it hawked to women.

Parks Associates' findings also makes sense in light of the fact that women are the main users of social media -- meaning we need smart phones, tablets and laptops to access the sites we spend so much time on. A 2011 PEW Report found that 69 percent of women use social media compared to only 60 percent of men, and that almost half of us visit social networking sites daily, (48 percent) compared with just 38 percent of male Internet users.

The Parks Associate study corroborates this relationship, finding that women download more music, upload more pictures and watch more films online than men, reports Mashable.

We've established women compose the biggest market for electronics, and we have a fairly good idea of what we're using those electronics for; the survey found that women's number one concern when buying electronics was ease of use. Given this, Jezebel's assertion -- that adding pink just doesn't cut it -- is dead-on. So remember, tech companies: next time you're marketing a product that you actually want to sell, focus on the product itself -- and not the packaging.

Why must we keep talking about "women" like it's some fringe element of humanity? Women IS humanity. We're 51% freaking precent of the entire universe. We grow new people, we shape them into adults, and we contribute at least half of every single part of life everywhere. Where does this attitude of women as "other" come from?

I mean, we have a "women" section in most media, including huffpost. Do we ever see a "men's" section? Why not? We could put sports in there, lingerie ads in there, and panicky articles about how to postpone balding. Instead, women - 51% or more of EVERYTHING - have to deal with media that has tabs labeled as if the majority of the audience loves "sports" and women - rather than being included in "media" or "culture", get our own little tab away from the men folks to whom the "culture" segment is, I suppose, directed? Ridiculous.

If it's considered good, moral or altruistic, women will do more of whatever "it" is.
If it's considered bad, immoral or selfish, men will do more of whatever "it" is.

Our schools and media tell us it's so, so it must be true.

We men needn't kid ourselves. Women don't make 85% of all household purchase decisions. Women make 100% of all household purchase decisions. And if we are smart, we keep our mouths shut 100% of the time and enjoy the new decorating.

say what you want to but the pink camo on gun stocks for women are nice i bought my wife 2 hand guns because i think the look fits her

I bought the gun with the black stock because the laser sight was beyond awesome. And the pick stands out too much in my black handbag.

I've always hated that.. anything for women must be pink. Who cam up with this idea? Over Christmas I was at work and saw "tools for women" (what does that mean anyway?) that were pink or something patterned, like leopard or zebra. They were actual zebra striped hammers and pliers and whatnot. SMH
I liked the laptop, actually.. if it was a different color, though, it would look 10x better. But everything else is just a bit much. Unless I'm supporting breast cancer, I don't want anything in my house or kitchen that is pink. Especially that UGLY pink and gold video camera. WTH what THAT!? lol

The problem with this article is that even though women buy more technological stuff than men, women still cant figure out how to use the darn things.

Pink became popular as a show of support for those of us with breast cancer. It isn't my fav color, but as a 2 time survivor, I do use pink to show support.

Yes I am an OWL! You dare put pink on me, you might be taking your life into your own hands!. They might have done it when i was a baby, but look out now!

I agree, offering things in just black, silver and/or pink is frankly rather annoying for both genders! I like pink, but hate it when it costs more than boring black or silver and won't splurge on it. I think companies can stretch a bit in this day and age and offer colors and designs in many colors of the rainbow! Men (not just women) might like something other than black or silver - how about blues, purples, greens, etc. for more than just certain cell phones. I admit, a purple hammer would be fun, or a blue broom, or bright yellow lap top! Becomes a vicious cycle of deceitful advertising " men/women only want this color" When "that color" is the only one available!
12:52 AM on 01/16/2012
I use to adore pink as a kid. But with the release of pink crap, it's been bugging me. I like the one pink top I have in my closet. NOT A PINK CELL PHONE!

Personally, I would love to have more colour in general. Green computers, orange toasters, purple printers, etc. Why do we have to make due with mostly black, white, silver, and pink? I mean, I love those colours too, but I wish the rest of the spectrum were as popular with electronics.
06:41 PM on 01/17/2012
I so agree! I think color makes ALL things fun! I also know several guys who given the chance, will choose a color over black for various items...it is not just a "girl" thing..

After grade school, pink become a VERY optional color. Sure a splash of pink here and there can spices up the right outfit and add some flair. But an entire bright pink shirt, slacks, outfit or sweater is teetering on Baby Huey Land -- makes others want to scream and run away. "Oh, Betty, you wore ALL PINK pink today, even the shoes and eye shadow! Why, my dear, you look like an escapee from the group home!" ACK

No, we've known all about women for years
We just delude ourself into thinking that women are goddesses
Basically, women are childish, sociopathic, manipulative, narcissists.
Who only value in men, what we can do for them

Not having much luck with the ladies? You might want to take inventory of self before blaming half the planet for your inadequacies. Whenever someone blasts out a long list of faults they find in others, it's usually a direct reflection of their own inner turmoil and stumbling blocks. Doesn't sound like you have much to offer anyone. Take a good, long look at that list of faults you wrote. You'll find yourself looking in the mirror.
10:57 PM on 01/31/2012
You do realize that men and women aren't that different, right? You're wrong when you make them all goddesses, just like they're wrong if they treat all men like gods and wrong if they treat all men like criminals. People are all flawed, all coping in their own way, and all dealing with a lot of identical issues, regardless of gender. You act as if women get a per-breast discount on their electric bill.

I HATE pink tools and gadgets. I do not need to be reminded that I am female when I am using tools. I can handle any tool and just because it is pink does not make it any better. Sometimes the "pink" stuff is even more expensive than the same object in another color and it works the same.

I am a man, and if a pink tool is availableas long as it is as funtional as the other colors i will usualy get it, like my neon-pink and purple extention cords, that I can spot clear across a job site, so no one else walks away with them, or the fact that 15 years ago, when everybody else all had crom tapes, i had yellow and never lost a tape on site, now I have to do that with pink or purple, cause everybody else caught on to the yellow idea. But I guess the only reason that the tool companies would use those colors is, you are sooooooo special?
