'The Flip Side': If Women Acted Like Men In A Bar

Posted: 02/ 8/2012 12:23 pm

What would happen if women acted like men at bars?

If you've had your fill of terrible pickup lines, offers of shots from uninteresting and/or creepy parties and drunks attempting to grind on you and your friends on a bar dance floor, this video is for you.

Director Jay Diaz's "The Flip Side" imagines an alternate universe where women act the way (he perceives) men do at a bar: These ladies are out to score. While I'm not sure that getting picked up is ever a one-way street (and last I checked, women can buy drinks for men, too), I did love watching these women using over-the-top lines like, "Are you sure you guys aren't brothers?" and one man at the bar with friends decline an advance from a gorgeous woman with "you seem like a nice person, but we're just trying to catch up a bit." The end is pretty satisfying, too.

I was a bartender for 12 years, much of that time working at a popular nightclub. Women do act like guys, or guys act like women, however you like. Just add alcohol.

It's a funny video, and I had a few genuine laughs, but it's not even about "the behavior of men at bars" it's the behavior of both men and women.

A bar full of men is often referred to as a "cockfest". It was a play on that.

Bridesmaids was way overrated
It just wasn't funny at all most of the time (though there were a few chuckles every once in a while)

well, if a woman likes a person she should make the first move!!! Why not???

Let me tell you women a little secret so you'll be happier. Don't over analyze things. Go with the flow. Be happy.

My cell isn't working -- may I borrow yours? Great, because my mother told me to call when I found the woman of my dreams.

I think Rotondi missed the joke. IT's more about the men (who are acting like women) sitting there passive aggressively wanting to be wanted but playing hard to get--and the asexuality of women in groups presenting themselves but always in a protected huddle. And the boring girl who always wants everyone to leave, with her. It's about female pack-behavior and inaccessiblity--and the ridiculous horniness that men (now the women in the film) deal with on a day-to-day basis.

Here's a wild idea fellas...when women go out its not always to be the subject of the male gaze and center of hyper-masculine sexual desires. My friends and I are modern women with conversational skills, partners, careers and wallets to pay for our drinks; when we go out yes sometimes its maybe with the prospect of meeting new people, but its not always an end goal of the night. The female pack-behavior is us enjoying one another's company and the inaccessibility...well sorry the last time I checked a dude sneaking up behind me to grind without an introduction shows poor form. I'll admit there are girls that play "games" but mostly we're freaked out by heterosexual men in bars because they've made the environment inaccessible, not us.

Here's a wild idea ladies...when men go out, it's usually to get the attention of, and get to know women. and hopefully leading to sexual intercourse. Just because you and your friends aren't looking for that, doesn't mean that men should read your mind and know before approaching you. We're going to approach you, because that's what we're there to do. if you don't like it, then it sounds like you're the one with the problem.

Most women who go to pick-up clubs don't even bring a wallet. They expect to have their entire night paid for by men. They act like drunken fools while expecting men to guard them from making poor decisions while their drunk. Modern women go out of their way to make drunken spectacles of themselves, then write and comment on blogs about how poorly their treated. As if slutty, falling down drunken behavior is deserving of respect. Western women live in a world of narcissistic, solipsism where they believe their feelings are the only thing that exists.

You sound bitter.
I don't mind women getting drunk. I love it when I am about to have sex with a woman who is saying she really shouldn't be doing this while tearing not just her own clothes off but mine as well.
God bless em!

When a woman complains about how she is treated at the bar, can I respond like you and say "So you didn't find any men interested in you? Sorry sweetie."
06:15 AM on 02/09/2012
Women buys drinks for men? Never happen in a pickup bar. Some male and female friends hanging out in a friendly pub, then sure maybe a cool woman buys a round for her close buddies, but only a really cool woman, and to be fair this is partly because women generally drink fewer drinks at a slower rate, so even in a non-pickup bar they tend to buy their own drinks and let guys pay their own.

And when you consider women make close to 1/3 less then men for the same work, why should she?

Sorry, but this has ALWAYS worked for me. Perhaps I'm just singling out the type of man that is more open to female advances..... I live in Japan, the men here are SHY AS HELL. They will covet you from across the room, but they will most likely never approach. It is hard to get in their heads, or their pants for that matter. I find that walking over, and stating *cough* exactly what I want (be it conversation or other), always leads to a pleasant evening.
12:29 PM on 02/09/2012
Yes, but that is Japan where men are the "herbivores" and women are the "carnivores" when it comes to dating. It is an interesting question as to how the gender rolls got flipped, but it is a different culture.

Sorry babe, but you got that COMPLETELY wrong. Men are *somehow* still the agressors here. But they don't do it in bars and clubs *usually* like we do. Most relationships in Japan start in High School or in the office. I have never ONCE seen a woman go after a man. The girls are even more timid..... I'm an anomaly here...

Are you serious? You walk over and tell them what you want from them and then what, they just say ok? I think that sounds kind of awesome. But...it probably would get old after a while.

I don't beat people over the head.... I walk up and say: Hi, I'd like to chat. Or, Hi, I'm looking for some fun tonight.
To them, that is WAY straight forward. To us, it probably doens't sound so bad.

This is what it was like when I went to a lesbian bar on labor day with my sister. It was fun to let loose and not have to uphold a "manly" image.

I KNOW! It's like you can't hit the dance floor of a straight bar without every girl on the floor looking at you sideways or taking a seat... and then yr just out there dancing by yourself.

If I'm gonna dance by myself, I'm gonna do at home in the comfort of my underwear.

I think i might be part lesbian.
