State of Undress: Is Nudity Still Newsworthy?

Posted: 09/27/11 08:23 PM ET

The conversation around San Francisco's recent "Nude-in," held to protest a proposed law that would limit public nudity, which is currently legal in the city, raises an interesting question: When a practice arrives at the point where it has a system of etiquette, has it lost its shock value?

According to The New York Times, one of the objectives of the Nude-in was to draw attention to a proposed ordinance -- introduced by Scott Wiener, a city supervisor -- that would prohibit nudity in restaurants and require unclad people to put a towel or other material down before sitting bare-bottomed on public seats.

What I found funny wasn't that Weiner felt he needed to nix bare-cheeked seating, but that the protesters were insulted at the idea that they would do anything so uncouth and inconsiderate: George Davis, who the Times reported is a "self-described 'urban nudist'" and "campaigned in the buff" during an (unsuccessful) run for mayor, said that putting that towel between your backside and the bench is "basic nudist etiquette," rendering legislation requiring it "totally unnecessary."

Basic nudist etiquette? We all know of another famous Weiner who didn't play by the rules, sending images of his barely-clad body into the Twittosphere. We can safely agree that sharing unauthorized nude photos is a no-no (see the recent brouhaha surrounding Scarlett Johansenn's nude pics hacked from her phone) and it might be a good idea to check with the owners of private property before baring it all on their land (see this farmer's reaction to pop star Rihanna going topless in his corn field) but is public nudity still all that risque?

I remember where I was when Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" happened on live TV and how much it shocked the world, but does anyone care to remember where they were when what's-her-name had a similar wardrobe malfunction on "Dancing with the Stars" this week?

Demi Moore's nude pregnancy photo was revolutionary when it appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair in 1991; now every celebrity has a similar photo to share with the world (see exhibits A, B and C).

The shot of a woman baring some or all for the cause has become a stock feature of awareness campaigns -- see Elisabetta Canalis and Bethenny Frankel posing nude to raise awareness of animal abuse, or these
750 Australian women posing naked for this aerial photograph to protest war -- but with so much skin being bared, does nudity really shock us anymore? And if not, has it lost its power to make a statement? How dramatic -- or effective -- is a Nude-in in a city that already condones public nakedness?

At the very least, the event prompted the editors of The San Francisco Bay Guardian to run their story on the protest with an accompanying cut-out page: a 100% recyclable seat guard for the protestors. The phrase splashed across it read, "If you go bare, put 'er there."

When discussing nudity we must remember that mere nudity absent any inappropriate behavior is completely different than nudiity with the intent to offend others by some kind of behavior. Be it lewd, lascivious or indecent. But never the two kinds of nudity do they meet.

I don't mind being naked but I'd really feel bad if I killed anyone. First I'd feel bad for the family of the poor victim, but mostly I'd just feel humiliated by killing someone with laughter. That would be sooooo embarassing.

Generally, I think Americans are still very shy about nudity because they are very squeemish about their bodies and bodily functions. I think that it has something to do with people associating nudity with sexualization. Until we learn to embrace our bodies and understand bodily functions--and teach our kids the same--we will still be shocked by nudity. Have you noticed the lack of nude or topless beaches in the U.S.?

We have to distinguish between different types of nudity. There is p0rn0graphic nudity, such as a playboy full page spread. And, there is artistic or natural nudity. The Birth of Venus, the painting on the link for this article is not inherently meant to seduce the viewer (yes, Venus is supposed to be beautiful and all) but it represents her natural state at birth, with some very mild undertones of sexuality.

In terms of the modern context, I think it's ridiculous that people become outraged by an accidental show of a breast by a female celebrity. Who has not worn something a little too revealing and had a wardrobe malfunction (remember that time at the gym)? All humans are equipt with those parts depending on gender. Maybe it would be helpful to introduce "nude safe zones"--like topless or nude beaches--where one can choose to be nude and those who don't want to see it can avoid it (like introducing co-ed dorms to a college). Once people become more comfortable, then it could expand.

The nudity taboo is one of the most absurd and useless belief systems society has ever had. There are (for the most part) two varieties of human. There isn't that much difference in the equipment between two members of the same gender. What makes nudity interesting is that people cover certain parts. I remember being on a cruise with an "adult deck" for topless sunbathing. My interest level was very short-lived. Massage therapists, hospital workers and so on see so much nudity that it isn't sexually arousing except in context. The American religious belief system has many absurd things in it. The nudity taboo is in the running for the most absurd...right there next to a belief that a "loving God" tortures people who don't do exactly what he says for all eternity.

If and when America shifts away from a sexually repressed Patriarchy, nudity will become less shocking or exciting.

However, I just heard someone recently quote 42% of Americans believe in the literal translation of the Bible, so I'm sure we will continue to find nudity shocking for many generations to come.

Someday America will grow up and this won't be an issue. Do Americans know that the Japanese all bathe together publicly?

It never shocked me. My family was very relaxed about nudity and I just never have been shocked by it.

It amazes me that the media still refers to Janet Jackson's breast-baring at the Super Bowl as a "wardrobe malfunction." It was clearly done intentionally. Beforehand both Jackson and Justin Timberlake had coyly hinted at a "big surprise" that would be part of their number. Neither Jackson nor Timberlake displayed the least bit of shock when her top was torn away. That's because it was planned. And the star-shaped brass pastie or whatever the hell it was over her breast--why would she be wearing that if she didn't know it was going to be exposed? For support?

As a naturist who visits the local naturist beach and as one that promotes designated naturist beaches on public lands, I have to admit that amount of hypocracy on the subject of public nudity is enough to drown this non-swimmer.

Just the issue of the nude female breast has to be examined not from the nudity issue but from the "control" issue.

Naturists have the ability to compartmentize the appropriate place to be nude. Non-naturists do not have that ability. That is why everyone should visit a nude beach or nudist resort so they may understand that the intent of the nudity has everything to do with the issue.

Maturity is the important factor.

Ladies, please keep your clothes on! The only time I want to see women's nudity is in the bedroom. It feels good, really good. Don't spoil that moment by showing everything every time.

"Everything" rather implies you'd be getting a more intimate look at our bodies than we'd be vouchsafing in public, lol. But you know, it'd be nice for a lot of us to be able to have our bodies seen without them being seen as ONLY sexual objects, every time.

I have NO problem with seeing people naked, even in public, but I know that some people do. I do not want to force my morals on others and I think by forcing others to be subjected to your naked body, that is shoving your own agenda down their throat.

I think a better solution is to open up a lot more private or public venues/places/parks/beaches where nudity is allowed and there are obvious signs posted saying so. I think a lot of people would be interested in exploring their own bodies in a public place if it wasn't quite so..public, like main street. In this way, everyone can do their own thing. That's right, I'm in favor of segregating the nudes and the non-nudes!
