Band Bites: Good Eats on the Road with Avi Buffalo

Snoop Dogg aint the only hot act from the LBC. Avi Buffalo, an indie-pop band from Long Beach, Calif., features lead man Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg (A.K.A. Avi Buffalo), and Sheridan Riley on the drums -- Barbara Kramer recently joined the duo on bass. Darlings of the L.A. music blog scene, Avi was signed to Sub Pop Records in late 2009 -- before they even graduated high school. The trio's self-titled debut album was released in April of last year to rave reviews, affording them spots on tour with major bands like Modest Mouse and Beach House.

The band's been touring like crazy, which also means they've been eating like crazy. So, we caught up with Avi last week to discuss the band's favorite food spots on the road, think: oysters, pomegranate juice and shrimp tails.

What do you eat before a show?
Pizza, burgers, chicken -- whatever's around. If the venue doubles as a restaurant, sometimes we get lucky with interesting food that way. For instance, The Bottletree in Birmingham, Alabama is known for its great food.

What's your favorite thing to get after a show?
Street food or whatever's around the venue. Pizza or burgers always do great by me.

Does it vary depending on city?
In the Midwest you'll just get nothing but weird fast food and especially gas station food. On the coasts you usually find more interesting food options.

What's your favorite post-NYC show meal?
A gyro from the Halal Truck gyro or a cheese steak or something else gnarly.

What's your favorite post-LA meal?
Burrito truck Al Pastor con queso or the classic bacon-wrapped hot dog with peppers and onions.

Any food that musically inspires you?
Oysters, pomegranate juice and shrimp tails.

What are your fondest food memories? Any of them documented in your music?
Our fondest food memory from the road is probably eating at our friend Fidi's house in England. He made us "the real deal" Italian pasta--that was good stuff. Another fond memory was eating at the home of our friend Ryan Oxley who works for Sub Pop in the U.K.

What's your favorite city for eating before or after you've played a gig?
Probably L.A. just because of familiarity, I know I can find good Mexican food or a greasy burger.

What is your favorite tour bus snack?
V8 Juice, water, TLC chewy bars, trail mix. I get the nasty stuff too, like bulbous chicken wings at a gas station in Texas. Whatever looks interesting in a gas station, we'll try it. This time I'm gonna get lots of energy drinks every day, and just see what it does to my body.

What hometown meal do you miss the most when you are on the road?
Making steaks and fish on my grill. But I miss Jimmy John's when we're home, because we don't have those in California.

Who's the pickiest eater in the band? What's his/her deal?
Probably everybody except for me, but that's because everyone else is vegan or vegetarian. The title for pickiest eater is probably between George and Barbara, the vegans. But I eat everything.

Who's the best cook in the band? What's their best dish?
We've all got our own "custom-shop" secrets. I'm really into meat, sauces and potatoes. Sheridan makes interesting veggie sauces and yogurt stuff.

Any food favorites of the entire band?
Definitely Jimmy John's.
