Susan G. Komen Foundation Adopts New Cancer Screening Policy for Worthwhile Lives

Posted: 02/ 2/2012 4:14 pm

DALLAS, TEXAS -- In conjunction with their controversial recent decision to pull funding from Planned Parenthood clinics, the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Breast Cancer Foundation today announced a new screening policy for providers, meant to detect and help save only "the most worthwhile" lives, which included a new emphasis on stamping out breast cancer in the unborn.

"The Susan G. Komen foundation has always worked towards a day when no woman has to lose her life to breast cancer," said spokesperson Jean Gladson. "Thanks to these new screening policies, which will help providers determine early, and decisively, which lives are worth our saving, we're going to be able to take a huge step in the right direction."

"By eliminating further treatment for those individuals whose survival importance we deem 'stage 0,' our overall survival percentage rates are going to be WAY better," Gladson concluded.

The new screening methods allow care providers to determine which individuals seeking care are deserving of actual treatment based on a series of simple preliminary questions about the patient. Some of these include: "Is the patient Latina, Non-Gentrified Black, or another non-specific Poor?"; "Has the patient ever shopped at a Wal-mart? If the patient refuses to answer, use the 'smell test' guidelines included at the back of this pamphlet"; "Does the patient's insurance information, or lack thereof, lead you to believe that society as a whole might be better off if this patient died from untreated, but not-provably-breast-cancer-related, illnesses?"

According to the Komen Foundation, the new guidelines have been especially effective in improving breast cancer outcomes in fetuses, or "pre-infants," one of the few groups the screening methods deem still eligible for treatment.

"Our increased attention to the breast cancer needs of the unborn is paying off in a big way," Gladson told reporters. "Since we've instituted this new pre-screening treatment plan, our pre-infant breast cancer rates have dropped down near 0 percent."

"Those are the numbers we're looking for," Gladson continued, "and some day, thanks to the strides that Komen For The Cure has taken today towards providing breast cancer care for only the most desirable candidates, we'll get there."

"Christian God and the 'right to life' organizations willing."

Ha! I know this is satire, but jeez. It's scary knowing there really are people out there with an agenda to make this a reality. Brilliant!

Nancy Brinker is to charity what Leona Helmsley was to hotels. Until she and her henchman, Handel, are gone, Komen's downward spiral will continue. We'll see whether Brinker's primary devotion is to breast cancer research or her own ego.

As a Dallasite, I can't even begin to tell you how accurate this reads. Planned Parenthood is the only place for the uninsured, under insured and un-served poor to receive cancer screenings and non-emergency gynecological/reproductive care.

I am a 2 year cancer survivor. Planned Parenthood saved my life. If not for the skilled and caring woman nurse practitioner at a North Dallas Planned Parenthood, my cancer might not have been properly diagnosed and I might not have survived ovarian cancer.

This North Dallas Planned Parenthood has since been closed. How terribly sad and short sighted. You really do get the feeling that there is a screening process to determine if you are one of the desirables who deserve to live.

I will sign every petition that keeps politics out of women's healthcare, and I encourage each and everyone to make a donation - whatever you can afford to Planned Parenthood - and to petition Komen to reverse their decision to de-fund needed healthcare in this heinous political war against women.

Excellent satire. Only a few critical clues. Reminds me of Swift's A Modest Proposal.

OK, I just figured out that this blog was 100% satire, however, it took me 5 minutes of being REALLY pissed-off first before I read it again and understood it's purpose.

I think that HuffPost should give an indicator that this was a satire. I'm saying that because the premise is not that far off from how the Komen organization is actually acting these days.

I'm telling you that a large percentage of the readers are going to believe this is TRUE!

Again... this is a GOOF!

And isn't that the PERFECT way to show just how crazy and egocentric Komen actually is?

But things are SO crazy today that it really appeared to be an actual report!

I'm one of the gullible as I believed it true. Why? Because of the bills coming out of Congress detrimental to women's health. Because even Democrats are "compromising" and offering up women's health to that compromise. I can hardly believe what the Democrats in Congress seem to think about letting the woman-hating Republicans have their way. The few who can be trusted are the Democratic women and Dennis Kuchenich and Bernie Sanders. With stuff like that going on, I'll believe anything nowadays about anti-women statements.

It is very interesting and also very telling that so many readers are wondering whether or not this article is satire. I think it's because so few people would actually be surprised to hear actual language like this from an actual right-wing organization. We really could read a serious article like this about a right-wing organization. I admit that I double checked the category to make sure this was in the Comedy section as I was reading it. Because it would be possible - we've moved so far to the right in this country - that this organizational platform could exist, and if it did, dollars to donuts Rick Santorum would support it.

It was only when I got down to the specific individuals to be eliminated that I realized it was satire! Didn't even see I was in the Comedy section. But I was convinced SGK actually said this.

I hope Komen wasn't buying all those pink ribbons and other items from an American company. I'd hate to add layoffs to the damage that they have done.
