Sarah Palin Insults Our Intelligence One Last Time

Sarah Palin isn't stupid. She just thinks we are stupid.

She thinks we will sit there and quietly nod while she yammers like a pageant runner-up answering the final question, and speaks against divisive partisan politics after months of indulging in divisive partisan politics.

She thinks we will believe that she is quitting the Governor's office so she can serve a "higher calling" and "be able to fight even harder for you, for what is right, and for truth." She plans fight for the truth -- just not right this second.

Because the truth is, she is quitting because she has one of the thinnest skins and smallest minds ever to hold office. Her over the top reactions to David Letterman's jokes about her daughter tell you all you need to know. She insults our intelligence by making nonsensical speeches and dredging up hoary political clichés thinking we won't notice ("We fight them over there so we won't have to over here," etc.), and then gets mad when we notice.

Her farewell speech should be required viewing in political science classes until the end of time, so that students can see the ultimate example of style over substance and form over content. Viewing this speech should be accompanied by Dan Quayle's "Murphy Brown" speech and Bill Clinton's "I did not have sex with that woman" speech.

Speaking of Dan Quayle, on Huckabee, he said, "The one thing the media doesn't like in the vice presidential selection is a surprise." Nonsense. When Palin was first introduced, she possessed instant star quality and seemed a formidable candidate who knew what she was talking about. Then it quickly became obvious she didn't. If she had shown a huge grasp of policy and knowledge, able to answer anything Katie Couric threw at her, she might have won the White House. How about taking some of that precious personal responsibility, Sarah?

Quayle also said, "They wouldn't attack Palin if they didn't fear her." Again, nonsense. No one fears Palin. They are just insulted that she is being seriously talked about as a presidential candidate by people who move their lips when they read the funny papers.

Speaking of Ann Coulter, she said Palin was still more popular than Obama and too talented to be stuck being Alaska's governor. Has your head exploded yet?

And don't forget the troops. Whenever a performer wants to get cheap applause, they invoke our troops, saying something like, "I'd like to dedicate this next song to our brave boys overseas." It's a patronizing shot, and only hack performers do it. Palin does it all the time. The most insulting thing she said in her farewell speech was addressed to the media: ''How about, in honor of the American soldier, you quit makin' things up?''

What? That makes as much sense as saying, "In honor of the American soldier, I'm not going to have sex with you tonight, dear." She selfishly invokes the troops to serve her own political ends. Besides, what, exactly, did the media make up? She doesn't say, because she can't. They didn't make up her statement that she knows foreign policy because Alaska is next to Russia. They didn't make up her preaching for abstinence and having a pregnant daughter. They didn't make up .. oh, never mind. It's endless. And the sad thing is, our brave troops actually fight for Palin's freedom to insult our intelligence on the national stage.

At any rate, I look forward to reading her messages posted on Quitter.

Does any discerning citizen really buy her spiel? I really wonder what the average education level is for Palin supporters given how much nonsense she spews out and they just continue to eat it up. Anyone with half a brain can figure out she utterly lacks any true qualifications and an acceptable level of intelligence and competence to serve the country. You're absolutely right, she is an insult to our collective intelligence.

Palin is the queen of non sequitur. She has taken it to new levels and dimensions. It's a strategy that she learned from the right wing zealots who use it to manipulate the clueless masses.
That's why they adore her. Since dubya turned out to be one of Jesse's pretender sons, they're hoping Sarah is their annointed, their chosen one. That explains their complete separation from reality and rationality.

Hey Sarah - here's some All- American TRUTH for you - troops DON'T QUIT. They would be THROWN IN THE BRIG if they did what you just pulled. Oh wait....george w. left the military before his term was up too. Bad company there....and there are ONLY 2 other governors in the history of our country to quit before their term is up - both in disgrace and SCANDAL - Jim McGreevy of nj and Spitzer of NY - and now Palin. The political HALL OF SHAME. Nice job govner!

"She thinks we will sit there and quietly nod while she yammers like a pageant runner-up answering the final question"

She thinks that because that's exactly what her base does. We don't love her at all. We loathe her and her incessent use of our military as a prop. She is an insult to all intelligent people.

I admit it, it's a guilty pleasure. She is so abominable, she's fascinating. It's a complete waste of time, but I can't tear myself away. How can anyone put this mind-blowingly inadequate waste of space in front of the American people and call it a candidate?!
04:48 PM on 07/29/2009
My thoughts also. Palin's very compelling in the train wreck sort-of-way. She's an absolute disaster every time she speaks and you can't help but shake your head and laugh at her gibberish. I'm not holding my breath waiting for her to say anything substantial or profound.
07:07 PM on 07/31/2009
I laugh and ridicule her in my spare time because it's a hoot! Her followers are fun, too.

Love it. You really tell it like it is. Thank you.

No, Palin doesn't scare me. The yahoos who would vote for her do. And sad to say, they elected Bush twice.

Great piece, Jim. My only concern is that you're premature with "one last time". This woman can't help herself when someone wants to put a microphone in front of her. Can we get something in writing that says she can't do any more damage to the country,...er, I mean, interviews?

True...True...But the real truth is the $$$. Palin loves the attention and the handouts.

The state legislature really blew it when they did not impeach Palin for her abuse of power over troopergate.

If that does not warrant impeachment in Alaska, what does?

What does a governor have to do? Murder a baby at high noon in front of the state capitol buildings?

The legislature gave her the green light to carry on and did she EVER!

In my humble opinion, Alaskans should hold this legislature responsible for all Palin's actions after The Branchflower report.

What a waste of time and money for nothing but, MORE abuse of power.

They say that there was "no political will".

All that means is that, not a single legislator, had the intestinal fortitude to protect the people of Alaska from a governor who THEY found to have extensively abused the power of her office.

By doing nothing, the legislature made itself irrelevant to the people of Alaska.

I know just how difficult it is to keep up with governor grifter.

But the responsibility and blame sits directly at the feet of the legislature who knew better, and whose JOB it is to protect the people of Alaska.

The legislature should have been the first people to look at the legality of the Alaska Fund Trust and SarahPac.

If the legislature did it's JOB there would be no need for citizens to file so many ethics complaints.

I think it is the untold story, as everyone focuses on what scam Palin will come up with next.

The Branchflower investigation revealed errors of judgment and abuse of power but no abuse of power resulting in illegal action...Not even a misdemeanor. A high crime or misdemeanor would have warranted impeachment, but as there were neither, impeachment wasn't warranted. Your anti-Palin diatribe is what's unwarranted.
04:13 PM on 07/31/2009
Actually, that's not true- the legislature had the right to request further inquiries into the report, for the purpose of Impeachment of Palin. They chose not to do so.

She was allowed to continue her many unethical actions, and it cost the state of Alaska a lot of money. You'll never hear the "conservatives" discuss that -- just like they don't talk about Mark "you don't need any stimulus money, make it on your own with God's help" Sanford's use of citizen tax payer money to fly first class to see his lover in Argentina.

See, "handouts" is what they call money for the people. Money for them? That's God's largess.

Call me a over-optimistic, but I don't buy Palin as a candidate for 2012. The vision of a feisty, authentic American mom with common sense and a supportive family isn't an accomplishment or credential unless you also have leadership skills and a real grasp of the democratic process. Her attempts to parrot tired complaints about big government and media may rally a crowd for the moment (like a reference to our military), but republicans need real leadership.

Commentators like Coulter harp about Palin's ability to draw attention as an indication of relevance. But smart republicans realize her kind of notoriety will ultimately only divide and damage the party. She and the Birthers are singing shrill but brief notes of dissent, colorful and distracting for a moment or two, but this can only end in bitter dissatisfaction. For everyone. Especially Republicans.

Why Palin bothers me? Because she thinks people buy her word salad speeches and aren't aware of the gimmicks she throws in. Does she think with a wink and a smile she is convincing?

Do I feel that Palin is a threat? No. But I do feel threatened and horrified by the mob mentality she incites. It reminds me, not only of the snotty high school girl with the "them against us mentality" but also of the villagers carrying torches.
