Tiger Woods' Dumb Advisers

What's Your Reaction:

Tiger Woods is getting more stupid advice. Instead of easing the scrutiny he has been enduring, the athletic superstar is about to increase public antipathy for his situation. Sympathy and forgiveness are not likely to be the outcome of his Friday "news conference."

Tiger's advisers have him convinced that he is different from other fallen public figures. Maybe they know he doesn't want to answer questions and because he pays them so well they aren't going to force the issue. Who wants to lose a gig working with Tiger Woods? Tiger has done things greater than most mortals and even other astounding athletes and his counselors appear to be testing a notion that he can play by different rules. He can't. Just because he took golf away from the plaid pants and martini crowd and turned it into a disciplined endeavor doesn't mean he's going to get a pass on his behavior.

The idea that he only has to read a written statement to a solitary live camera, a room full of friends and colleagues, and a few wire service reporters that have agreed not to ask questions, is certain to anger journalists and the public that has adored Tiger but still wants answers. Nobody wants to know how many women and how long this went on and whether his wife is considering taking him back into her life. But Tiger has to respond to reasonable inquiries from practicing journalists before he can expect to get another clean start with the public. He doesn't have to provide details but he does need to deliver honesty. He isn't likely to be given a second chance unless he gives some answers.

The first question to be asked, however, is about journalism. What kind of wire service goes to a "news conference" where no questions are allowed? Are they present simply to write about Tiger's facial expressions and how much he sweats? There probably aren't many reporters at Bloomberg, Reuters, or the Associated Press that want to attend this event and be ridiculed for sitting silently and playing by Tiger's rules. And if they don't ask questions, they are likely to endure a bit of their own ridicule from peers.

This appearance has the potential for Tiger's friends and colleagues gathered in the room to turn into a bit of a Greek chorus as he reads his statement. Politicians often try this public relations scam when they are beleaguered. Dealing with a controversy or a faux pas, the pol doesn't want to face journalists alone so he or she invites supporters to encircle the podium and populate the audience and applaud at responses and hiss at questions. It never works and only further angers reporters and they redouble their efforts to do critical reporting on the politician. Tiger risks cranking up the tabloids and TMZs of the world to go out and find more of his paramours.

Tiger is likely to endure the same treatment as the evasive politician. If he isn't going to answer questions, why not just videotape his statement and stream it on his web site? A cutaway camera could show all of the supporters in the room with him as he read and he wouldn't risk angering sports reporters. Regardless of how much contrition is in Tiger's statement Friday, it will not be enough unless he takes a few questions and provides honest, difficult answers. Someone ought to ask, first, why do this at the Accenture Match Play Tournament and distract from the golf? Is it because they were the first major sponsor to drop you? Are you being petty? Isn't there a better time and location?

The statement he will read, unfortunately, is fairly predictable.

"First, I want to apologize to the public and the fans and supporters of golf. I've been dishonest with my fans, myself, and most importantly, my family. I didn't know I had an addiction. I've entered treatment and believe I'm recovering. I am also trying to work things out with my family. I love my children and I am also working to save my marriage. This has been, and continues to be, a difficult time for my family and me. I realize I've dishonored all of the things I claimed were important. But I want to try again. I deserve a chance to try again. I ask for your forgiveness and understanding. But I am also a golfer. Golf is my life. It is who I am. And I cannot fully regain my life unless I am playing golf. So, I want to announce today that I am returning to the tour. Thank you."

Does that cover everything? Does the public have a right to know more? Should Tiger Woods answer the question of whether he was having extra-marital sex while his wife was pregnant? How long has he behaved this way? Where did he get the idea this way okay? If he didn't have that idea, why was he cheating when he knew he was one of the most high profile people on the planet? Where in the hell does the fan's right to know end and Tiger's privacy begin? He might need to denounce some of the stories about porn stars and having sex with someone other than his wife on the night his dad died. Don't these issues go to the heart of a man's character and help golf fans decide whether they can separate the man from his game, his life from his swing? Who the hell knows? But a five-minute statement in a completely controlled environment isn't going to end Tiger's woes.

And it may even make matters worse.

Whom ever is not happy with Tiger Woods should simply change to a different sport. Mr. Woods is not paid by the public purse and he does not owe anything especially to the complainers.

I never bought a single item based on an endorsement by a celebrity, if people feel offended and would stop buying products endorsed by Mr. Woods, then they should do so and stop crying about it.

As soon as Tiger Woods is back on the golf circuits, I will be one of the first people who will watch him, I enjoy the way he plays and do not care about his private life.

I think his sponsors set this up so he can stiff-arm questions for at least the near future. Then they'll hope it goes away. It does carry the feeling of a neocon non-apology apology if you ask me. I don't buy the "blame the addiction" cop-out, anyway. I do buy the arrogance and won't be surprised if he resumes his old ways at some point. I couldn't be bothered to watch this kabuki theater.

Honestly, I think this statement was not about damage control, I think it was part of his treatment -- part of making amends to those he has wronged (in this case, apologizing to his fans).

So criticisms about its effectiveness towards defusing the crisis are fine, but beside the point. The time to judge him on that is after he gets his head straight. If he can't do that, then the crisis will *never* end.

Is his head straight? If he didn't write this, I doubt it.

If Tiger Woods had any brains he would ignore the public scrutiny entirely. Clearly he could live the rest of his live without making another dime and still live a life of luxury. If he wants to play golf, he should go back to playing golf. If he wants to have sex with strippers and porn stars, he should continue doing so.

However, if his goal is to somehow rehabilitate his public image, that ship has sailed. I'm sure if he wanted to add even more millions to the millions he already has there would be plenty of available commercials from Trojan or similar products.

What you are seeing with Mr. Woods apology is modern, state of the art, professional damage control. He covered all the bases, there was a little bit there for everyone, except maybe the porn stars, strippers, nude models and cocktail waitresse, and we mustn't presume they have hearts of gold. After all they did break the highest rule of the Sisterhood which is "hands off any other woman's man".

People are complaining that the apology came off as scripted and contrived, but don't forget that in all those meetings with the expensive consultants it was Tiger there saying "Let's go this way" and "Yeah I like that". What I see is an essentially hollow person, whose ability to read the emotions of others is either severely impaired or non-existent. That's his handicap, and he is trying to do the right thing in spite of it.

I can think of plenty of worse crimes done by much worse people - too many to list here - and they enjoy complete anonymity from a public that should be far more outraged at what they have done. This is just the way that it is, here in the age of lies. Enjoy it while you can!

Tiger Woods doesn't owe you or anyone other than his wife and family and apology. As I seem to recall even b4 he left college everyone was running to him. He didn't ask you or anyone else to root or cheer for him. That's was your choice then as it is now. He didn't try to make money of anyone, the sponsor came to him, to try and make money. He didn't say he was a role model, that was the title put upon him. He is simply a golfer, the best, if not one of the best, who had affairs. That don't take away from his talents. That's something between his wife and himself. I don't quite understand how everyone think they are entitled to an apology from him. As a golfer you don't have to support him anymore, but you have no right to determine how he lives his life.

hopepad08 thank you you saved me the time to say just that . Tiger is a lot more graceful than I would have been . is it a slow news year ? I'm tired of hearing about this , lets move on .

"Tiger Woods doesn't owe you or anyone other than his wife and family and apology."

That changed the moment he signed any endoesement deal.

Not really. The endorsement deal was for the benefit on the companies, to make money on his name. If someone can to you and said I'll give you millions of dollars to wear my name on your shirt or appear in 2 or 3 commercials a year, what would you do? That's still doesn't give them a right to determine how you live your live, cause in the end the deal benefits them more than you.

I don't agree with what you say at all Mr. Moore. What do you want from Tiger, a pound of flesh. It was not a 5 minute statement and I thought he was really sorry for what he has done. I don't care about it anymore. I like Tiger and we all make horrible mistakes in our lives. I hope he can get his life together for him and his family and return to golf. I want to watch golf again and I want to watch Tiger. That is where he belongs and he has worked hard for his place in golf. One day these people who have turned on him and the sponsors that have dropped him will regret it. No one knows how much of this crap is true anyway. Just because someone says so, doesn't make it true.

The only people that seem to criticize the tiger woods’ situation are other PR consultants. This train wreck has pretty much stopped in its tracks precisely because the typical media circus was preempted. In fact some of the same people with axes to grind when Tiger did not succumb to the media pressure regarding the Masters Admittance policy and advertiser actions look like the pathetic losers they are. The Masters told the “traditional” PR people to stick and that tournament is even more successful than ever.

Let’s face it, these typical media games and hyperbolic and self fulfilling clusters are exactly what the media wants and exactly wrong for the celebrity or athlete.

Good for Tiger not top listen to the so called experts. No one believes anymore that our media is ever doing the right thing anyhow. He and his team will not blink. Sorry for all that lost 24x7 train wreck viewership.

Dude, journalism has been dead in this country since the 70s. Why so surprised?
06:48 PM on 02/19/2010
Oh for Gods sake get over this...he is at least trying......
04:50 PM on 02/19/2010
Really. If the personal lives of every professional male athlete in the country were scrutinized the way Tiger's life has been scrutinized the past couple of months and if all the cheating and philandering athletes had to take time out from their sports to get their lives straight, we'd temporarily have no men's professional sports. Really. Promiscuity and infidelity among athletes (like rock stars) has been the dirty little secret for years. Journalists, especially sports journalists, have been complicate in keeping these dirty secrets. They only report on them when the news is broken by someone else. This time it was the Enquirer. Journalists don't deserve the right to ask questions now.

There are two ways to look at Tigers apology;

1. He is truly sorry and feels that as professional sports figure and role model he needs to also apologize publicly for what he has done publicly, and the same goes for apologizing to his wife.

2. He is apologizing to Nike, his other sponsors, and the sponsors customers who after all, spend $$$ on him, as NOT giving an apology would be tantamount to going back to Q school.

Which is it? Number 1 or number 2? He has already apologized and gone into rehab, so why the big "press conference?" Most people don't give a damn any longer. Hence the #2 scenario.
