Komen for the Cure Underestimated the Power of Women and Social Media

Posted: 02/ 6/2012 5:15 pm

Much has been written about the Susan G Komen for the Cure Foundation vs. Planned Parenthood vs. breast cancer screening PR disaster. Was Komen's initial decision to pull funding from Planned Parenthood a political one in the fight against abortion? Was Komen just trying to protect its brand and the money of so many women who contribute annually because of an ongoing investigation into Planned Parenthood? Was it a move to advance the far right's larger efforts to cut women off from reproductive health care, especially for those who can't afford it on their own because they lack health insurance?

This is a story that isn't going away anytime soon, even though I'm sure Komen never thought in a million years that women would react as viscerally as they have. And that's why the Komen Foundation is probably finished, because they misjudged their constituency. Not understanding the motivations of supporters is a death knell for any organization.

But the real story in this whole fiasco is one that most have missed -- the role that women in online and social media had, and continue to have, in bringing attention to a story that Komen must have believed would go relatively unnoticed because the amount of money involved was such a small portion of Planned Parenthood's annual budget.

The fight against breast cancer is supremely personal in a way many other causes are not. A true sisterhood was born around this one medical issue and the bonds of that sisterhood have only grown and become stronger over time. Women across the country have come together in support of each other to raise awareness for the need to fund the research for a breast cancer cure. We've walked together in pink t-shirts and we've taken money out of otherwise tight family budgets to donate to "the cure."

This sisterhood exists not only in real life, but in the virtual world, as well. And as anyone who is the least bit social media savvy knows, women rule online spaces. In the last few years, those women have created powerful brands and successful businesses out of knowing how to leverage those tools for maximum effect. How any organization could have failed to foresee that tech-savvy women, who are the same ones who've been their primary supporters, wouldn't use those same tools to fight back on behalf of loved ones who need the screening and preventive care services Planned Parenthood offers, is about the biggest corporate communications failure I've witnessed for a long time.

Women felt betrayed and they had the tools and presence to do something about it.

Facebook and Twitter lit up with users speaking out against Komen's decision, encouraging people to stop giving money to Komen and take it to other breast cancer organizations. Women announced they would stop "buying pink." (The issue of pink-washing is another story for another day). And Beth Kanter, one of the leading authorities of how non-profit organizations can use social media effectively, created the "Komen Can Kiss My Mammogram" board on Pinterest.

Whether Komen was actually using dollars for breast cancer screenings as a political pawn in the war against abortion and women's reproductive rights, we may never know for sure (though according to at least one report, Komen's VP for public policy, who is staunchly anti-abortion, was one person behind Komen's plan to ditch Planned Parenthood.) But in some ways, it doesn't really matter now. Komen has offended its base and there may be no fix for that.

I doubt there is a woman on the planet who doesn't know someone who's had breast cancer. My grandmother had breast cancer. My best friend died of breast cancer. And a good and wonderful friend Susan Niebur -- a planetary scientist, mother of two, author of the blog Toddler Planet and known as "@whymommy" on Twitter -- has been a graceful and eloquent advocate for her particular form of breast cancer. Susan is in hospice and the people whose lives she has touched have been sending their good thoughts and prayers to her through virtual cards being produced by her friend Amy aka TeachMama.

When an organization uses the lives of our friends and families as political fodder, we don't take kindly to that. And we know how to raise a ruckus. And we're not afraid to do that in the name of good people who aren't statistics, but who are important parts of our lives. For those of us for whom this is personal, it doesn't matter that the amount of money the Komen Foundation wanted to pull from Planned Parenthood was only a small part of that group's annual budget. What matters is the message it sent -- that keeping political benefactors happy was more important than even one woman's life.

As one person pointed out to me, the Komen Foundation can do whatever it wants with its money and give it to whichever organizations it believes advances its agenda. And that's true. But as others have said, "Susan G. Komen is dead to me," and "I'll never give the Komen Foundation another dime." I suspect a great majority of Komen supporters will find those other organizations in a hurry. I know I have.

In 1963 a church in Birmingham was bombed and four small black children attending Sunday School were murdered by the blast. To me that was the moment when our entire nation finally said: "That is enough!"

The Komen affair is in a similar vein, and in the big picture it is small potatoes, but it may be the turning point in the war now being waged against women.

I am thoroughly disgusted with Komen at this point....... does breast cancer discriminate? Nope..... any woman, any where..... and some men as well......how awful to decide (in a way) whose life deserves to be spared and whose does not...... pardon me, but is that not why the foundation was set up in the first place?~insurance companies deciding who and what to cover? In this day and age we are living in a time where birth control is a contributing factor in some cases to BC...... all of planned parenthood is not centered around abortion. THANKS EVER SO MUCH SGK--- for disgracing the pink ribbon logo..... I know I for one will NOT purchase another pink product...AND I AM A SURVIVOR OF 3A METASTATIC HER2+ MYSELF and have racked up over 5 years of survivorship....at 31 I was diagnosed, and prognosis sucked.... but I am still here......YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR MAKING ALL OF US ASHAMED OF YOU!

I'm glad the pink curtain is falling. Give direct to breast cancer reseach and others you support. I used to give United Way my "fair share"(a hour of pay per month) I worked in a shipyard it was dangerous. Then we found out about UW execs living high on the hog> they have not seen a DIME of my money since. I give DIRECT now & will too with SGK & boycott ANY pink ribbon corp>Playing political football with sick woman's breasts IS SICK!

I've been waiting for someone to cover this end of the story as well. Bravo!!! Komen lost their credibility with me well before I was diagnosed 3 years ago (due to their massive overhead) but I was livid when I became savvier about the commercialization of pink and saw how little they donated to research. Now that they've unleashed a fury between pro- and anti-choice (seriously, is anyone "anti-life"?) the noise is nothing but a distraction and women are still dying -- including two very beloved BC bloggers just yesterday: @whymommy and @ccchronicles.

I would like to use the Komen fiasco to channel our collective energy into changing the dialogue that rather than "finding a cure" moves towards "FUNDING" one!

The SGK Foundation has raised nearly a billion dollars since its inception, claiming the money is to go towards finding a cure. By now, with that kind of money, a cure should have been found by now. Where is it?

But I still have 2 unanswered questions:
1) Why did Nancy Brinker and her personal friend and political alli Ari Fleischer use our donated money to pay lobbyists to kill a Senate bill that would have started a government funded and sponsored program that would give women of all incomes free cancer screenings, mammograms, and treatments?

2) Why was Fleischer, who is as misogynistic as a man can get and who is not a member of the SGK Foundation in any way, put in charge to find a new SVP?

Interesting first point. I'm trying to find facts to back that up online now. Can you give a few more details?

Komen for the Cure lost it's way many years ago. The pink-washing, the threats to small charities using 'for the cure' in their slogans, the corporate sponsorships that did little to help cancer research but got good press for the corporations, all these things make Komen more of a corporate entity than a charity. Now that Komen has made the choice to enter the politics of division, I believe it would be best for those who want to give in the fight against cancer to find better places to donate.

I also agree that it was the perception that women were once again under assault by the social conservative forces in our country that caused many women to push back. I am very encouraged by this. I hope it helps keep these types of divisive forces out of our government and our lives.

I also would like to add that Nancy Brinker was probably a bad choice to put a face on their organization. In both her statement (defending their decision)and her interview with Andrea Mitchell, she came off as an over botoxed, cold, condescending, out of touch wealthy snob. She sounded like she was talking down to the little people, who were not smart enough to understand what was best for them. We answered her quite loudly that we are smart enough, and we won't support the likes of her screwing our poorer sisters.

Yes, we told Brinker EXACTLY, loud and clear, what the little people think. We also hit her where she'll hear us the most: in her bank account.

Now she's going to have to find a real job because she's about to lose the one she has.

Although I agree with women rallied for a cause and were defiantly underrated I disagree with the conclusion. I think it is just the straw that broke the back. Many of us have been angry about the politics of abortion but were no longer heard. I think this was an ahaha moment for others. I hope this is also the beginning of the end of the anti choice movement in the right wing
08:08 PM on 02/06/2012
Amen, sister. I was wondering when someone would break this part of the story. The backlash against Komen ain't about lefty v. righty. It is about the betrayal of women who have been touched by cancer. You mighta thought they shoulda known not to mess with us-- except when you get to the "pink washing" story, you'll discover they've been quietly messing with us for years. I guess they thought we'd never wise up.
08:50 PM on 02/06/2012
Oh, please. That is so far from the truth. Komen gives tens of millions of dollars to other organizations that provide education, screening and ACTUAL MAMMOGRAMS to women who need them. This is about supporting Planned Parenthood, and the support of a woman's (or young girl's) right to choose to have an abortion. At least be honest. there would not be such an outcry if Komen had denied a grant this year to some other organization who isn't providing abortions.

only about 20%of the money they generate actually goes to fight cancer, something that had been kept quiet until they opened this door, that alone should upset people on both sides. I stopped giving to United way years ago for the same reason. By the way, some PP's do give "actual mammograms".

Jonas Goldberg is well known as a right wing pundit who is loose with the facts. The true fact is that the number of Americans who think abortion should be illegal in all cases has never risen to 25%, much less half.

Your cherry picked "fact" ("all cases") has nothing to do with the argument that this is a victory for women. Illegality is not the issue here. Where one group gives its money to is the issue. Ending breast cancer is not the mission of PP.

One of the most important things I have realized in the past week is that I have been wasting my donation dollars by giving to pass-through organizations like Komen and the United Way. There are administrative costs to handling charitable contributions, of course. However, if I give directly to the agencies that provide the care and institutions that actually do the research, those costs become a smaller percentage of my donation. I will henceforth no longer give to "middleman" organizations.

The National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics has a website where you can either donate directly, or find specific clinics in your area to give money to (if you have personal ideology issues with Planned Parenthood), or just call up your local hospital or doctor's office and ask them what they need the most. By giving a direct donation to any university/cancer center engaged in cancer research you are assured that more of your money is going where it was intended to go.

Enter you zip code to find the charitable clinic closest to you.

Dose anybody think Nancy Brinker will be flying couch from now on or do they have private jets?
08:53 PM on 02/06/2012
Before you attack Brinker in this way, I would suggest you check out the salaries of Planned Parenthood executives. Like some of the Komen execs, many of them qualify for the elusive 1%. Cecile Richards rakes in close to $400,000/year and a large number of other executives from PP Federation and its affiliates make $100,000 - $300,000/year. There 990s are public, you can check it out yourself.

All of these salaries are on par with non profit organizations of similar size, and with Komen. I think hcwcars was complaining about the excessive perks, though.
