Joe Moreno
GET UPDATES FROM Joe Moreno

Proco Joe Moreno was inaugurated as the Alderman of Chicago’s 1st Ward on March 26, 2010. In February, 2011 he was elected to a full term, with 74% of the vote.

Since becoming Alderman, Joe has become known for doing a lot of DIY constituent service, including paying for snow removal, graffiti removal, vacant lot clearance and pot hole repair, out of his own pocket. Legislatively, he’s focused on simplifying bureaucracy, expanding opportunity and he’s passed many ordinances and resolutions, reflective of these two legislative philosophies.

Joe lives in Wicker Park with his eight year old daughter, Ava. He’s been a vegetarian for the last 19 years. He enjoys jogging the streets of Chicago’s greatest ward and plans to be the 1st Ward Alderman for a very long time.

Trust the Trust?

At Council last week, the mayor listened to my (and other's) advice and deferred the vote on his Infrastructure Trust Ordinance. The vote will occur at a special meeting of Council today (Tuesday).

Quite rightly, there is a lot of trepidation about this plan. The parking meter deal (I wasn't...

The Case for Supporting Me on Tuesday

On March 20, Illinoisans go to the polls in what's likely to be the most nationally watched primary in our state for many years (thank Mitt for his incompetence).

I'm running to become the 1st Ward Democratic committeeman to make the 1st Ward whole again. I will continue...

A Garbage Story

On February 28, CBS aired a story they received from my opponent for committeeman (as confirmed by the CBS producer), that, among other things, accused me of having "campaign" signs on garbage cans that don't have proper permits.

My Vote on the NATO/G-8 Ordinance

0 Comments | Posted January 18, 2012 | 3:32 PM

I voted yes on the NATO/G-8 Ordinance, proposed by Mayor Emanuel, today.

Almost everyone agrees that having these two summits in our city is a great opportunity to solidify our rightful place as a world city. While my original position was to vote against this ordinance, my opinion changed...

The 112th Congress -- How Not to Do Government

Last week I had the pleasure of showing my hometown Democratic candidate for Congress around our humble City Council. I introduced her to the mayor and many of the aldermen, whom I admire personally and professionally.

Unfortunately and frustratingly, a map was not introduced yesterday at City Council.

So today, in an effort to begin the legislative remap process, the Latino Caucus and several other Aldermen just (around 1:15 p.m.) filed a "coalition map" at the Clerk's office.

I seemed to annoy a lot of people on Tuesday by Retweeting this NBC blog by Ted McClelland.

I agree with McClelland's point that the mic check by Occupy Chicago on Alderman Moore (one of the most progressive members of City Council) at a meeting...

My Yes Vote on the 2012 Budget

0 Comments | Posted November 16, 2011 | 10:51 AM

Today I voted yes on the City of Chicago 2012 Budget.

When Mayor Emanuel presented his initial budget last month, I agreed with 95% of its contents. The budget hearings, which we had everyday in the last week of October, were informative. I live tweeted (while my...

The First Proco Joe Moreno

My grandfather was a paratrooper who jumped on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He fought all the way to Germany, was wounded twice and won two Purple Hearts. After the war he settled in the Quad Cities, IL, married my grandmother, Gorgonia Ester Moreno and opened a barber shop. He died...

Decriminalize It... Don't Criticize It

On Wednesday, my friend Alderman Danny Solis will introduce an ordinance that decriminalizes marijuana possession... Anyone caught with 10 grams or less will be issued a $200 fine, instead of being arrested, and given a record for life, as is currently the case. I'm incredibly proud to be...

Why I Completely Support the Occupy Movement

There was quite a reaction (pun intended: about 99% positive) when I told WBEZ last week that I absolutely support the Occupy movement. I believe that what these people are doing is the very definition of courageous. The people camping and marching should be admired for doing something...

Sending a Message: The First Budget From Mayor Emanuel

On Wednesday morning, Mayor Emanuel delivered his budget address in a special meeting of the City Council.

The mayor delivered a broad budget, packed with specifics, which I mostly agree with. I certainly agree with the general philosophy behind the reforms and cuts that were announced.

WTF Is a Committeeman? And Why I Want to Be One

0 Comments | Posted October 4, 2011 | 5:27 PM

When you hear "Chicago Ward Committeeman" what do you think? Before I was in the game, it conjured the good old images of the smoky room, all men, all self-aggrandizers, all smoking large cigars... I now appreciate that the reality is slightly different.

Every ward has a Democratic and...

Social Media Week, I Mean Social Media Life

0 Comments | Posted September 27, 2011 | 1:10 PM

Last week I participated in a panel discussion for Social Media Week. The panel was moderated by Cook County Commissioner John Fritchey, who definitely has the most personal and probably the most interesting social media content out of all Chicago-area pols.
