Paranormal Investigation: From Big Foot To Aliens

Posted: 08/17/11 12:27 PM ET

If legends and even many eyewitness accounts are to be believed, since ancient times we have shared our planet with various "man-beasts" - monsters that are more or less in our image. While monsters are often consigned to ancient legend and literary fiction, many are held to be in some sense real. Such paranormal beings (those beyond the normal range of science and human experience) include supernatural ones, such as the werewolf, as well as others (like the Yowie, Australia's version of Bigfoot) that, if they indeed exist, could be perfectly natural creatures. These are those embraced by cryptozoology, the study of unknown or "hidden" creatures (i.e., cryptids).

I have been studying these and other reputed paranormalities for 40 years. By 1995 I had become, apparently, the world's only full-time professional paranormal investigator. I have studied mythological, folkloric, and literary monsters; traveled to remote regions in search of legendary creatures; sought vampire graves in Vermont; visited carnival midways to meet human "monsters," look behind the scenes at exhibited spiderwomen and the like, and witness the transformation of a lovely girl into a wild gorilla; took part in a nighttime expedition with Bigfoot hunters; and explored the Pacific Bigfoot country.

In the slides that follow, as well as in my new book "Tracking the Man-Beasts," we set out to track the man-beasts - to separate fact from fancy.

Thought to presage disasters or to be evidence of divine judgment, human "monsters" (monstrosities) are depicted in this woodcut of 1499.

To paraphrase a wise man whose name I cannot recall , "a skeptic is just someone who hasn't had a paranormal experience yet". I believe this to be true. I have met many people from all walks of life and all religious or nonreligious backgrounds that have had experiences that cannot be explained. The skeptics attempt to categorically dismiss all paranormal phenomena as hoax or hysteria (or some mixture of both), which I believe is indicative of their arrogance, dogmatism, and contempt for the individuals involved. Strange things happen all the time, like it or not. If science can not yet explain these occurrences, or even acknowledge them, then science must evolve.

I think that it's important to investigate these things from a statistical perspective, rather than focus on individual cases. It's too easy to get wrapped up in whether this case or that case is a fraud, faked, the product of an overactive imagination or whatever.

An analogy is the relationship between smoking and cancer. No one disputes the connection, but it is nearly impossible to prove that any individual case of smoking caused that person's cancer. The tobacco industry has demonstrated that point rather effectively.

However, once the states sued, the tobacco companies were forced to settle. Why? Because all the states had to do was prove the case statistically.

The same situation applies for ghosts and E.T.'s. The large numbers provide statistical significance, where individual cases do not.

I've seen a few terrifying creatures lately, the likes of which I've never seen before. Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann, Sarah Palin and FOX commentators. They seem inhuman, and capable of great destruction.

I saw something in Kentucky once. We called it the abominable snowman, just because it reminded us of the thing on the Rudolph cartoon. My mom, ex boyfriend, and I were riding in a Uhaul through Kentucky around 3am. We saw something tall in the median, and as we got closer, we saw that it was a furry tall thing. When we drove past, the head and shoulders were in the window, which meant it was at least 7-8 ft tall. The fur was blonde and nasty looking. If it was a hoax, I'm not sure why one person would just be standing in a median at 3am on an interstate no where near a town. Anyway, we all saw it, and we have no idea what it was.

I've enjoyed Joe Nickell's articles in Skeptical Inquirer for a few years now. He's something of a celebrity in skeptical circles. When he investigates the paranormal he investigates using critical thinking and scientific methods. In other words, he's not a faux investigator (like those you find on the Syfy channel).

I only mention this because the comments thus far seem to indicate that a lot of people don't recognize the name. (Which surprises me but perhaps it shouldn't.)

The paranormal being tested using scientific methods: that's an oxymoronic phrase if I ever saw one.

MR. NICKELL..... 2 questions that the "believers" can't seem to answer to add credibility to these stories.....! .... 1.With so many sightings of BIGFOOT worlwide, why hasn't a skeleton ever been found...ARE THEY IMMORTAL ? 2. Why are all the ghostly hauntings always in the darkest, dirtiest, dingiest, crummy places at the oddest hours ?....Can't a haunting take place, lets say, on a Sunday afternoon, around 2 o'clock in my living room ?

There have been many personal experiences and evidence of hauntings in many places and any time. My grandmother saw a man (not blurry or see through) standing in her living room one afternoon. He looked at her and then simply faded away. She didn't recognize him at all, and hasn't see it since.

Once again there not dead people. ( I know the Bible)
They're the spirits of devils working miracles. You might want to get to know Jesus.
I've seen some wacked out stuff too. I turned to the Lord and He saved me big time.

Well, none of this may be true, but what the hey, it's still a lot of fun.

These human renditions of fantastic beings prove nothing! Similarly, all those who put stock into paintings of Jesus, and claim to know he is a white blond, never stop to think that those who created those images never lived when Jesus was supposed to have lived and would not have a clue about his features.
Let's all get more real and stop looking to magic, fantasy, or anything else for easy answers to whatever haunts us.
What is happening to science, reality, and truth anyway? Oh, yeah! The right keeps making sure that our young stay dumb by cutting education budgets every chance they get.

Totally true! All we know is that Jesus was a Jew. Most are dark skinned, dark haired. I think the reason is that a "more likeable" look of Jesus is for the masses, not just one culture. This makes HIM look pure and just.
I am sick of the education cuts, along with the inept tenored staff that continue to stay in a system that helps them instead of helping our children, our future, no less! God save us, we need reform that will put the education system back to where it should be teaching the ABC's, not putting money into the pockets of people like the Supt. of Atlanta schools. Did you know that the Principals and the Supt of all schools get a pesonal bonus in their pockets if the scores are great? Not the teachers who do the work. Why do you think most male teachers last only 3 years in the classrooms, they know that administration is the best route. Three years means tenure, then they can apply for anything in the school district. The bonus's need to go into the school to apply for new books, new technology for our children. Without tenure, our teachers would be working very hard to keep their jobs........like the good old days. Tenure to me, is a dirty word! Even Universities and colleges use it! No wonder the cost of education is exploding!

> Analysis of a frame from the 1967 Roger Patterson "Bigfoot" film shows
> evidence of fakery. Costumer Phil Morris reports he sold Patterson a
> gorilla suit and material for modifying it, while a man named Bob
> Heironimus says he wore it for the hoax.

While I'm not going to defend the Patterson film, I just want to point out that several different people have claimed to be or to know the faker or the man in the suit or the man who sold the suit. Their stories have as much credibility as Patterson's. Since they all couldn't have done it, at least some of them just seem to want attention. Also, Patterson's partner Bob Gimlin, who was cheated out of any money from the film by a scheming and underhanded Patterson and who is not fond of the man, still swears to this day the film is to the best of his knowledge authentic, and if it were a hoax Patterson kept the plan secret even from him. Maybe we'll get a juicy deathbed confession from him someday (Patterson himself died many years ago) but so far there's really no convincing proof about this film either way.

If planet of the Apes was the best hollywood had to offer in 1968, then how do you figure Patterson had a suit made up with stretch fur (that wasn't avbailable in 1967) better than they did with the planet of the apes film. I've seen many hollywood makeup artists say this could not have been done in 1967. Also, why would he have put breats on it? Just a thought,

absolutely correct. Recent reevaluations of the patterson film have shown details never before seen.
It seems odd that Patterson would go so far as create a female animal. Breasts are clearly visible on the film. Also, it appears that on the right leg and knee there is some kind of injury that left the creature with an uneven stride.

The true focal length of the video has been determined and when its checked against human size and equivalence… it would almost be impossible to be a human. Not only from the size, but the stride.

In my humble opinion, the Patterson film is absolutely authentic and clearly shows a living, real creature. With the increased use of higher quality video cameras, I imagine the evidence will continue to mount.

I am an avid hiker and camper and to speak to the question as to why no bones have been discovered: I have never in my travels seen bear, elk, deer or any other skeletons. Wild animals and scavengers drag them off. What is found is usually an unrecognizable pile.
