15 Raunchiest Rock Star Memoirs

Posted: 03/31/11 08:54 AM ET

Rock history is littered with juicy memoirs from its most distinguished and deviant sages. From overdoses and groupies to the social upheaval of race relations in America, the tome of rock tell-alls paint a portrait that can serve as a backdrop for our national conscience. Plus, they're so damn fun to read. Here are 15 of our top picks for raunchy rock memoirs.

"The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band" by Motley Crue
1 of 16
Hair spray, cocaine, and orgies: oh my. The dirt is pretty much what these guys dish about in an era of extreme excess. It's the epic tale of a hair metal band crusading against the era of polished '80s pop. Narrated by each member, the book offers an unvarnished look at the lives of drug-and-sex-addled rock stars. A screenplay based on the book is said to be in the works.

Tommy Lee on his wedding:

"Rudy, one of techs, gave us the best toast ever: 'To Tommy and Heather,' he said, raising a champagne glass. 'May all your ups and downs be in bed.' Then he took the champagne glass and smashed it over his head."

ELVIS & THE MEMPHIS MAFIA puts all of these to shame.
Confessions from the circle of friends that were with him from the beginning to the end.
Really, Motley Crue are rank amateurs compared to The King.

No One Here Gets Out Alive belongs on that list, as does Rock Scully's "Living With the Dead"

No One Here Gets Out Alive belongs in the fiction section. It slays me that is the supposed definitive book about Jim Morrison, especially when not one surviving member of the band had anything good to say about it. Worst rock biography ever.

It's hard to think of Miles as a rock star. Bitches Brew and his other fusion work was still jazz as far as I'm concerned.

Rotten is a really good book.

Isn't it interesting that The Beatles, the most important and influential band in the history, never felt the need to engage in total depravity. Sure, they did drugs and had groupies, but they were so far musically above every other band that ever existed, they all tried to make the world a better place as role models and human beings. The death of no other rock star will ever impact the entire world as did that of John Lennon.

Actually, they were as depraved as anyone else.
They just didn't feel the need to write tell-alls about it.

Maybe because the Beatles stopped touring and were just in the studio from Rubber Soul till Abbey Road. It seems that being on tour is where most the debauchery takes place.

"Papa John" by John Phillips of "Mamas and Pappas" is something else too.
Not so much the sex, but the drugs- Oh Lord!
If you want to know how dope can ruin your life if you don't already know, just read that one!
REALLY SCARY STUFF, KIDS!!

Omitting 'Hammer of the Gods' from this list isn't just negligent - it's blasphemy.

That wasn't a memoir, it was an unauthorized biography written by someone else. God awful book all-around.

You do realize that 'unauthorized biographies' often paint a far more accurate picture than authorized versions, don't you? Plus, from this list alone, both the Motley Crue and Marilyn Manson books at least were written by someone else - Neil Strauss, to be precise. As for the others on the list, I don't really know, but I doubt that many of the musicians concerned have the writing skills and patience it would have taken to write these books themselves.

Nothing on Jim Morrison???
06:01 PM on 03/31/2011
Unless he did it recently via ouija board, he never did write an autobiography.

M. Manson should be sure to put in his book how when I confronted him for spitting on a female friend after a show that he ended up running out the back of the bar turning over tables along the way..... Ah the adventures of the early days of playing in bars. ;o)

What about ABBA's best seller, "Just Look at Us Now"? It's full of great stories about eating too much Muselix for breakfast and going out in the rain without an umbrella. Fun stuff!

Keith Richard et al -- alive; Euell Gibbons and Jim Fix -- not.

Makes you question common sense.
