My Favorite Nightmares, Homeless Style

Posted: Updated:

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.
Raindrops on tents, with weather so cold. To us, rain's a nuisance; to some, it's a mess.

Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens.
Their gloves have torn holes, and are caked with much dirt.

Brown paper packages tied up with strings.
Signs made of cardboard are used to appeal. For spare change to be spent for a much needed meal.

These are a few of my favorite nightmares.

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels.
Scraggly old pets are their only true friend. They'll deny a warm bed than abandon their pet.

Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles.
Sirens and screaming are their nightly iTunes. Cold leftover food are tonight's only grub.

Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings.
Helicopters with spotlights soar way overhead. Uniformed cops with billy clubs in hand.

These are a few of my favorite nightmares.

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes.
Men in torn overcoats with dirt caked so thick.

Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes.
Harsh frozen snow that punishes with frostbite.

Silver white winters that melt into spring.
Every year's season is hell on the streets.

These are a few of my favorite nightmares.

When the dog bites.
When we turn holiday giving into year-round charity.

When the bee stings.
When we move homeless into warm homes.

When I'm feeling sad.
I begin to imagine nightmares become dreams.

I simply remember my favorite things.

A nation committed to no homelessness.

And then I don't feel so bad.
