After getting over the initial shock of hearing that Sarah Palin is going to resign, it kind of makes sense when you stop to think about it. Running for reelection in 2010 would mean having to spend a lot more time (and contributors' money) in Alaska, and then being a lame duck would bring a steady stream of embarrassments.... So, fish or cut bait.
It would have made perfect sense for her to say something as simple as that. Or to take the classic political out and say she wants to, uh, spend more time with the family.... And Palin did say those things, in her own way.
But then she just had to go and be a martyr.
Some Alaskans don't mind wasting public dollars and state time [with ethics complaints and inquiries]. I do. I cannot stand here as your Governor and allow millions upon millions of our dollars go to waste just so I can hold the title of Governor.
This politicking was a step too far. Governors don't resign to save taxpayers' money. They are freakin' governors, one of the few people who can really affect fiscal policy in the states. They sign budgets, for crying out loud!
Now, are ethics complaints sometimes used for political gain? You betcha. But that's the price of open government. And Palin's mention of wanting to stop the ethics complaints makes it seem like she's got something to hide.
This wasn't your average resignation speech, and whoever wrote it was going after all the GOP soft spots. Perhaps the emphasis on ethics complaints was their only good way of getting the principle of "limited spending" in there? But if Palin is running for the White House, "RESIGNED TO FLEE ETHICS COMPLAINTS" is sure to make an appearance in attack ads.
Wow. It seems Palin couldn't even resign without making a gaffe.

Palin: "In fact, this decision comes after much consideration, and finally polling the most important people in my life - my children.. ."
Note she doesn't include her husband - just her children. This means (at least) two things. One: It was one of her children who exclaimed "Hell Yeah!" My guess would be daughter Bristol, no doubt sick of her mother using her to further her political ambitions. Two: Sarah solicited political advice from one-year old Trig. 'nuff said.
Since she had just mentioned the "attacks" on Trig, I assumed that she was attributing the "Hell Yeah!" to him.
I was similarly perplexed when I heard that dubious statement. Is 15-month-old Trig sufficiently savvy to understand what it means for Mommy to "resign"? Just sayin'.
The 2008 pres. campaign created the monster known as Palin. She probably wouldn't win the Alaska gov. race in 2010 and that would constitute two losses in a row for Palin. So, why not be a quitter and take the money for the book deal and whatever inane offers that come her way. Her conversation is nonsensical.
If she really does still intend to run for president (which right now I doubt), surely bringing up the cost of ethics complaints must have been one of the stupidest things she could possibly do?!
How long would it take her on the campaign trail to induce far more legal costs than she has in Alaska, for tax payers as well as herself? It's not like American elections take place without anyone ever being sued... And what then will she answer when someone asks her how she can defend continuing to run when the cost for tax payers is so high?? That she only cares about tax payers in Alaska, not those in the other 49 states?
She lied about the legal costs. A Fairbanks newspaper tallied the costs - under 300K. Her "millions" figure is just another example of how loose she is with the truth.
Mark Sanford: "Thank you thank you, thank you, thank you..."
And of course she can't make a public appearance without lying.
Alaska has spend under 300K, not millions and millions, on her ethics complaints. Most of that money went to cover a complaint filed by Palin against herself. So that a governor appointed personnel board could counter a legislative finding of harassment and other misbehavior.
Her, not millions, legal expenses of 500-600K also went mostly to pay for her own self-inflicted ethics complaint.
Bravo, well said.
"(T)he title of governor." Does Palin think elective office is a substitute for winning Miss Alaska?
I hope this ends in a federal indictment, then she could "pal around with terrorists" in prison...
Ahhh, the poetry of it all
Maybe they will put her near the terrorists in prison. Could America survive Palin;s Parade of Kids going to visit Mom?
Whatever her future plans, I hope they include a move to a "pro-American" part of the country.

We learn that “millions of dollars” is in fact, actually $296,000, as far as ethics complaints go. Numbers shmumbers.
The complete breakdown is not yet available, but we do know this about the three spendiest ones:
$187,797 stemmed from the Troopergate investigation, a good chunk of which Palin initiated herself. We’ll get back to that.
$43,028 stemmed from a complaint by Andree McLeod which resulted in a recommendation that a state employee undergo ethics training for a series of “troubling emails.”
$29,962 most likely came from the “travel gate” investigation in which Palin reimbursed almost $10,000 for expenses billed to the state for her children’s travel expenses

Martha, THANKS for the great link. Very enlightening. Not a crook - just like Nixon. People forget that 42 of Nixon's minions went to prison, he and Agnew resigned to avoid same. Hopefully, more Rethugs will go down.
The Governor owes a better explanation to her constituents and especially to those who voted for her.
How can she so passionately exclaim her desire to serve Alaska and then so quixotically change her mind?
She's a quitter. Period.
LOL
I think we've established that.
I think it is clear that she wrote it herself. it was rambling, babbling, juvenile.. ...sounds just like all of her other speeches
It's a shame that I don't have a bigger soapbox than just a little post on this website. But I know something nobody else seems to be aware of.
Ready?
Don't be shocked, this one's a doozy:
Sarah Palin is kind of dumb.
Huh. Really? I guess you're right. Too bad the left-wing mainstream media has been covering that up for so long. Guess what? So were Reagan and Bush (I and II). The only smart Republican I've seen in office in my lifetime was Nixon, and even he got caught.
"Whoever wrote" the speech! It was babbling, incoherent nonsense. How can you believe someone other than Sarah wrote that?
Has anyone mentioned the hastily written and grammatically atrocious statement at her Website? Check out http://www .gov.state .ak.us/exe c-column.p hp. It looks like it was whomped together in less than an hour and put on the web with no editing.
Bafflingly, the end of the article includes this phrase: *((Gotta Put First Things First!))* The entire piece is either the work of a surprised, unprepared staffer or the product of a mind pressed to the breaking point. I can't wait to see how this whole thing unfolds.
she resigned so she can accept the book contract. it's that simple.
Yup. And cash in on her celebrity to make 10's of millions of dollars speaking and having a news show. Makin' hay while the sun shines...
*(( SHOT in the Foot ! ))*
