As a family doctor, I've been on the front lines of the health care debate for many years. I've witnessed the skyrocketing costs of health care and how the lack of access to medical services can destroy a family, both physically and financially.

The United States lags behind most industrialized nations in caring for our sick; our infant mortality rate ranks 49th in the world, well below Slovenia, Cuba, and Hungary. Prior to 2010, our medical care system was designed for the early 1900s. But Obamacare has begun to lift our country out of an unsustainable and chaotic state. And the benefits have already begun: continued coverage for our children under the age of 26 and insurance coverage even for those with pre-existing conditions.

The medical group I joined 30 years ago incorporates many of the same goals as Obamacare: to emphasize prevention, provide good access for urgent care, and deliver personalized, evidence-based care from infancy to end-of-life. Contrary to Romney's scare tactics, Obamacare is not about the government interfering with how we are treated. In fact, Obamacare removes many restrictions currently imposed by insurance companies. Under Obamacare, robust competition among health plans will continue with an emphasis on quality outcomes, not just financial profit.

Under Romney, we would continue the dysfunctional health care system that relies too heavily on emergency room care for the uninsured and lack of preventative screening, especially for women's health issues. Romney vows to end Planned Parenthood, which is one of the few affordable clinics that supports all women's health, including contraception.

As a physician for over three decades, I believe Obama has delivered the best plan.
