More powerful than was imaginable,
We are almost in a state of collective shock/awe.
The promise -- Antigone before the king comes to mind -- wonderfully hard to process.
He looked as a man with providence; the opposite mirror of Bush.
There was humility inside it.
He was even careful not to get too frenzied -- gave a soft landing.
Sober, reflective, determined... emotional beyond words.
The world looked to America... we showed our best.
For one night at least, the world was sane.
The planet sighs in relief and deserves a righteous party.
We have beaten back the worst in ourselves, the old and inevitable forces of cynicism and greed.
No more patriotic primates to rule the roost.
Real change will take sacrifice, vigilance and will.
The bailout of Wall Street, the wars and the final gorge of the right wing must be stopped now, a return to Keynesian balance.
Bottom up instead of top down.
The gold standard that every human has value -- be awarded respect, dignity and opportunity --
The currency of grace.
A wave of renewal and possibility.
And now the real work begins.

As someone who is not American, but a member of "the planet" let me say how right you are. Here in Toronto this is all we can talk about. It's like, overnight, a dark veil was lifted on how we see America. Very emotional....very uplifting, even from the outside looking in.
Always enjoy reading your blogs, John.
Thank you ZoeK, we need to hear how this looks to the outside world.
It looks so far like the rest of the world has more appreciation for his election than half the US.
just had a thought...in 2016 he should be elected "world leader". can you imagine!
Mr. Cusack, my virtual encounters with you are always a pleasure. I tip my hat to you - well captured, sir.
Thank you John.
Your contributions to political discourse in this country is always well thought out and well-written.
I always look forword to reading any article of whom you are the author.
Thanks again!
ps: War, Inc. was great -- funny and scary as hell
The bailout of Wall street was a joint effort by both Democrats and Republicans, supported by Obama.
The first move Obama made was to offer Rahm Emanuel his Chief of Staff positon. Probably the biggest war supporter in the entire Democratic party, after Lieberman, is the FIRST guy to get the call.
You people think Pelosi and the 06 Congress was a let down? Wait a year, it will be business as usual with Obama and his Washington insiders team. I feel really bad for the true believers who have been tricked into believing this guy is going to bring peace and honesty to Washington. I feel contempt and disdain for the countless shills here who knowingly prey on the good nature of voters.
War Inc. is alive and well, same board of directors, different face man. Same game.
You're still here? Seriously, aren't there any republican sites you can visit?
Pelosi is a great leader. You Republicans have done a good job schmeering her, but she does not deserve it. Name me one reason why she is not a good leader?
She not could do anything in congress because Bush used or threatened to use his veto pen every single time they tried to do something. Bush made zero effort to reach across the aisle.
She did not lead to end war funding, she did not lead to oppose offshore oil drilling, she did show incredible leadership in taking out Kucinich at the knees when he dared to cross her and push for impeachment.
I am Green, not Republican, opposed to all of our wars. Surely you can see that, but I guess it is easier to attempt to smear someone as a Republican, than it is to defend the war monger Rahm Emanuel.
Criticizing Obama for being too far to the right should not be considered a crime by so called Democrats. But in this brave new America it is.
So McSame would have been a better choice in your mind? Where do you get this "biggest war supporter" c r a p? Same place that espouses that Obama is "the most liberal Senator ever" meme?
YOU LOST, SORRY, LET'S TRY TO WORK TOGETHER NOW!
"...the gold standard that every human has value--be awarded respect, dignity, and opportunity."
unless you are gay in California, Arkansas, Florida or Arizona.
Yes, now the real work begins.
You are right, now the real work begins...........I am in one of those states and did NOT vote for an anti-gay measure, voted against it, and was far from alone...........one day at a time.......Keep faith.
Yeah, all of us, rich, poor, whatever color or religion, have to support and have patience with this new direction. The electoral map and the numbers that voted for McCain show us that it is not going to be easy. I fear the GOP will say this was the inevitable swinging back of the pendulum and call Obama's election a 'token.' Hopefully education can begin to overcome ignorance. This economic mess is bigger than any of us can imagine. If Obama manages to do what most Dems have done the last 20 years and reduce the national deficit and get some new things started the GOP will surely try to exploit it as not enough.
Like you, I believe education can repair the damage done to our country.
But I also believe that Pelosi (which is a republican in dem clothing) and Reid, need to be removed and replaced with competent people with a backbone. Pelosi's husband made a mint the past few years.... talk about inside information.
Thank you, John.
...jsut the fact that we are now hearing references to dr. king and his agenda, to connecting with the spirit of the kennedy brothers, to picking up the "momentum" for the collective good that we left behind as a result of the spring ,1968 assassinations, the grim waste of vietnam and the fall, 1968 election is so amazing to those of us inspired so many years ago by the civil rights struggle. the worthy heroes of that era are back in our nation'scollective consciousness just like that as a result of last night, replacing the hate-spewing, divisive heroes of "the backlash" -reagan, the bush family plutocrats and the trent lotts.....
Thank you John, for your considerable contributions.
We just witnessed a French Revolution; using a vote as the sword instead of a guillotine.
breath.
