Boehner's "Small Price"

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Just yesterday on CNN, Wolf Blitzer asked John Boehner, the leader of the GOP in the House, this question (video on Horse's Mouth):

"The loss in blood, the Americans who are killed every month, how much longer do you think this commitment, this military commitment is going to require?"

And Mr. Boehner responded:

"The investment that we're making today will be a small price if we're able to stop al Qaeda here, if we're able to stabilize the Middle East, it's not only going to be a small price for the near future, but think about the future for our kids and their kids."

What a stunningly cavalier statement about the lives of the young men and women who serve our country.

Whether you support or oppose the Bush escalation, no American should ever for even a moment think the cost of war is small.

A single life is a large price to pay for any endeavor. Sometimes, in our national interest, we choose to pay that awful price, but we must always make sure that the policy is worthy of it.

Visit our wounded warriors at Walter Reed hospital and ask whether the price they paid was small. Talk to the mothers, fathers, husbands and wives of those who have been killed and ask them to measure the price of war. Young lives stopped short, children who won't have a mother or father there as they grow up, when they graduate, when they get married -- that loss is many things, but it is not small.

Where is Representative Boehner's apology? And where is an Iraq policy equal to our soldiers' tremedous sacrifice?

Any price to too big a price when not only are you getting NOTHING in return, but you are WORSE off than before you paid.

Oh wait, we ARE getting something in return -- more bills, payable in blood, treasure, and terrist recruiting.

Boner (sic).

So damned few of these idealistic assholes ever encourage any of "their own" to put on military garb and go play russian roulette with hidden IEDs.

But they're EAGERLY ready to crow about our "All-Volunteer" military. Enlistees that are innocent dupes entranced by a bonus check of an amount they can't begin to fathom. It's NO DIFFERENT than baiting a trap in hopes of luring some unsuspecting prey for what will ultimately be a date with a stew pot - then proclaiming how great it is that the little critters willing sacrafice themselves for the honor of becoming a main entree!

Tell him that he is a partisan liar who will pay at the polls.

You will need a district zip code. 45069 works.

Where is Representative Boehner's apology?
You’ll find that where you find George Bush’s conscience.

Oh yeah, you can bet there will be an appology before our coffee gets cold. This is a capital offense for a politician to make. The entire country will want to pour hot oil over this spineless prick! Is he running again in 08? He might want to rethink that one...

ask the pages about boehner 's concern for our kids. once again, it's funny that boehner picked the same time that petraeus gave his report to be in iraq, it is almost like he already knew what petraeus had to say and it was his job to call attention some where else.

Boehner was bragging about his son signing up. His son has a wife and children. For some people, loyalty to country comes before anything except God. God's on our side, so it's a small price to stay on the right side of God:

"God said 'Abraham, kill me a son'
Abe said 'God you must be puttin' me on'
God said 'No'
Abe said 'What?'
God said 'You can do what you want to Abe but; the next time you see me comin' you better run'
Abe said 'Where you want this killin' done?'
God said 'Out on Highway 61'"

Rich,

Pulled this from his official biography at the congressional website.

Born in Cincinnati in November 1949 as one of 12 brothers and sisters, John has lived in Southwest Ohio his entire life. He and his wife Debbie have been married for 33 years. They have two daughters – Lindsay and Tricia – and live in the northern Cincinnati suburb of West Chester. After graduating from Cincinnati’s Moeller High School in 1968, John earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1977.

He has no son and he didn't serve in the military, much less go to Vietnam even though he was 18-22 during the last 4 years of Vietnam.

Just another chicken hawk, big on squawk, unable to walk the talk.

Yeah, it was Duncan Hunter, or as I like to call him "Huncan Dunter"; I knew "Bohn Joehner" just didn't sound right.

Sorry about that. I'll try to not rely on memory in future.

Hi, I just noticed your post. I'm sure I saw him brag a few months ago about his son signing up - which doesn't necessarily mean he's in Iraq. But, I think that truly wouldn't bother Boehner and he'd truly be proud.

Look at the next post after yours to see how I feel about that.

Got a link to that? I can't find any mention of it anywhere, and I'm pretty sure I would have noticed it at the time...

Senator Kerry, with all due respect, get in a room with Reid and Hillary and Fiengold and Pelosi and Obama and whoever else it would take, and get an agreement to pull out all the stops and fund only the redeployment. If you lead in that way, enough will follow and it will get done.

I remember a 60 MINUTES story from a few months back about the extremely well funded, well coordinated and heroic efforts of the medic/triage teams on the ground in Iraq. Despite the amazing efforts and astounding success of these good men and women, I had a sickening, cynical feeling about the whole effort: Invest all the time, money and effort in getting them out of theater alive, thus keep the casualty numbers down. It won't feel like Vietnam as long as they can keep the war dead number down, never mind the statistics that track the mounting number of those permanently physically and psychologically maimed. That sickening omen was confirmed by the Walter Reed scandal, and it is only just beginning. Given what this war is really about, maybe we should have those horribly injured vets pumping gas and cleaning windshields at every gas station in America. This way, every time we fill up the tank, we all have to take a hard look at the real price being paid, instead of referring to the 3,500 and counting war dead as a "small price to pay" for our "freedom".

John: it would be the best thing that could happen to see the result of the war and the bravery of the soldiers, and it might just change the closed attitudes of many of the Republicans.

There is a more fundamental question than how large a price was paid by sacrificing those lives. What was that price paid for?

The sacrifice of those soldiers is not making us safer. It is making us less safe because it is turning the world against us, and we can see that in how the ranks of those who hate us are growing. Their sacrifice is not spreading democracy which can't be spread through starting wars. Their sacrifice is keeping alive the dream of American corporations having drilling rights, and an occupying army to protect their interests. Only when you understand what the price was paid for can you truly understand how large a price it was. Please inform Rep. Boehner next time you see him.

EXCELLENT! Excellent use of a typical right wing tactic against them. Senator Kerry: I applaud your ability to learn and to use that knowledge for a good cause. Keep it up and there may be some hope for this Congress after all.

At this rate perhaps the Democrats will figure out what is going on after Iran is Nuked, the US in Bankrupt, and Civil Liberties only exist in History books.

Democrats are on the little bus.

What are his views on abortion, stem cell research and the death penalty. Is he another one of those who support life up to but not much beyond birth.

Boeher (correctly pronounced Boner btw - "when 2 vowels go walking the first does the talking"), is very conservative - and in the pocket of big business. He's the guy who was passing out checks from tobacco company lobbying firms to other Republicans on the floor of the House.
