Lost in the Common Controversy: The White House Celebrates Poetry

Posted: 05/15/11 04:32 AM ET

If you heard about the White House poetry event this past Wednesday, you probably heard about it for the wrong reasons. The decision to invite hip-hop artist and actor Common to read poetry drew a surprising amount of furor from the right. Former Bush senior advisor Karl Rove and Fox News host Sean Hannity, among others, offered their in-depth analysis of Common's lyrics, coming off like a couple of flustered freshmen in a poetry workshop. I suppose such strange distractions are to be expected in the weeks after your political enemy kills Osama bin Laden, but the Common silliness was unfortunate, as it tarnished what was otherwise a great day for poetry.

On Wednesday afternoon, Michelle Obama hosted a poetry workshop at the White House for 77 young poets who were flown to Washington for the event. The workshop featured former poets laureate Rita Dove and Billy Collins, and the inaugural poet (and friend of the President and First Lady) Elizabeth Alexander. The First Lady lauded the young poets for taking emotional risks and striving to connect, and she admitted that growing up, she leaned on her writing and was a bit of a poet herself. The professionals offered advice as well, most of it inspiring, and some more realistic, as when the always-entertaining Billy Collins quipped, "You shouldn't worry about whether you're good now. You probably aren't that good, but you'll get better. There is hope."

The President hosted a poetry reading that night and owned up to publishing a couple of poems in his college literary magazine (which you can read here). He also spoke well about the power of poetry:

Everybody experiences it differently. There are no rules for what makes a great poem. Understanding it isn't just about metaphor or meter. Instead, a great poem is one that resonates with us, that challenges us and that teaches us something about ourselves and the world that we live in. As Rita Dove says, 'If [poetry] doesn't affect you on some level that cannot be explained in words, then the poem hasn't done its job.'

The reading (which you can watch here) featured an eclectic collection of poets, including the aforementioned Dove and Collins, singer Aimee Mann and spoken word poet Jill Scott, who was just "really geeked" to be there. In case you're wondering, Common performed and did not attack America.

As the President put it, "poets have always played an important role in telling our American story." It's refreshing that, on Wednesday, he put the art form in the spotlight and let it speak.

"the Common silliness"???? You call going to Cuba to see a convicted cop killer (who by the way is hiding out there) silly? It's a total disgrace that he was allowed at the White House. You truly believe that both cop killers he supports are innocent????

Wonderful article Mr.Lundberg.
Even I got lost in the controversy an
d forgot to focus on the fact that the White House is supporting the arts by organizing this summit for poetry at the WH.
Thank you Mr. President and Mrs. Obama for showing class and having the courage to support poetry even in these tough times.

Just because the conservative right don't understand the words or for that matter listen to them in their entirety doesn't mean Common is this cop killing radical. The Hannity's O'Reilly's etc. rant and rage about everything the Obama's do. They seem to forget Johnny Cash conveniently.

No Common isn't a cop killer but supporting two of them is so so wrong?

Those who opposed it, should read the lyrics they oppose in detail, try to understand poetry is difficult for the most of us.... so you are excused !

but do not let ignorance of the subject matter or your political inclination keep from seeing what is good about having your own opinion of things (first amendment in our constitution)

To have an opinion does not constitute a crime !

I am an Obama supporter, it was still wrong to invite Common. You are right one should read the words he has written. If you do you will find violence directed at the police, support for a convicted murderer of a policeman and more.

Agreed. This won't be posted, but I am reminded of the prison poetry brought to life in rousing intellect by Mr. Edward Murphy. The poem, for your edification, is entitled:
"Kill My Landlord"
Dark and lonely on a summer's night.
Kill my landlord. Kill my landlord.
Watchdog barking. Do he bite?
Kill my landlord. Kill my landlord.
Slip in his window. Break his neck.
Then his house I start to wreck.
Got no reason. What the heck?
Kill my landlord. Kill my landlord.
C-I-L-L my land lord.

Wonderful ! please try not to allow others who for political reasons would like to change the subject to criticism - this was a great thing to do Mr & Mrs President of the United States !
I am very proud of you two !

Listen up: When Johnny Cash, Porter Wagner and hell, even Eminem sang about savaging the women in their lives it was considered poetic license. When Black people sing or rap of angst about the political, economic or criminal justice systems, it isn't automatically biographical.

Common is a performer. Lighten up. Oh wait...maybe that's the problem.

As a poet who teaches and gets to see the enlivening effect that the art has on the young poets as their work is received and appreciated and understood, this article warms me tremendously. What an opportunity for everyone...the poets, the students, the President and the country.

I love that the Right Wing Rigidity Movement is alive and well..they just keep shooting themselves down with such idiocies..and here i thought Common was one of the good guys; whenever I've seen him performing, his lyrics are certainly timely and well received, even by an old fossil like me..when they manage to somehow disinsert their heads from their lower orifices, perhaps they'll actually listen to what he's saying and ...nah...

Got to hand it to President Obama: he truly wants to be everyone's president. He won't be able to please everyone, but he is trying to reach out to all Americans.
