The AFL-CIO hopes to have a major impact on next month's elections. In an internal memo released to the press, spokesperson Marty Marks detailed the organization's ongoing and substantial effort:
"Union volunteers have given out 17.5 million leaflets... made over 23.6 million phone calls... knocked on over 1.3 million doors...[sent] 18.6 million pieces of mail so far."
The AFL-CIO has a significant presence in several key congressional districts in Pennsylvania. In PA-03 there are 64,526 union voters, in PA-12 there are 104,721 union voters and in PA-11 there are 75,246 union voters
The 3rd District is currently represented by first term Democrat Kathy Dahlkemper who defeated Phil English in 2008. The 12th is Jack Murtha's old seat and Democrat Mark Critz won a special election last May to fill the seat pending the general election. Paul Kanjorski holds the 11th seat and faces a strong challenge from Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta.
