A-Sides with Jon Chattman: Hearing The Deafening and Orange You Glad I Said XNY?

If summer were a person, I'd pick it up from the ground, dust it off, and cradle it with both of my hands. Then, I'd gently stroke its cheek, and take a page from Rocky V by saying "Get up you son of a bitch 'cause Mickey loves you." But, summer isn't a person, I'm not Burgess Meredith, and the sunny season is all but over. Worse yet... it's going out on a Miley Cyrus VMA twerk and foam finger. Yes, summer 2013 is all but flatlining. It's all so sad but what can you do? Well, you can pick yourselves up, get on your feet, and dust yourselves off because Jonny A-Sides loves you.

The two bands featured today will snap you out of any seasonal funk you're going through. The Deafening are a thrashy, lovably trashy throwback rock band from New York City who released their album Central Booking earlier this year. The band is fronted by über-showstopper Lena Hall, who works band gigs into her rigorous Broadway schedule. Hall, who used to go by the name Celina Carvajal, is currently appearing as one of the leads in the Tony Award-winning smash Kinky Boots and has a rather lengthy career of performing on the city stage. That said, she always makes time to melt faces with her band. From Primary Wave Music's Listening Room in New York City, Hall along with Deafening co-pilot Burt Rock, performed a few tunes and talked about her split-personality career. Watch "Shake Down Chinatown" and the interview below, and visit the A-Sides YouTube channel for another special performance. Love it? Yeah, you do.

Like The Deafening, Brooklyn-based rock duo XNY (Pam Autuori and Jacob Schreiber) will knock your socks off (assuming you're not wearing flip flops). The pair just dropped their sophomore album Orange, and it's a unique, raw rocking record (say that three-times fast). While the pair usually play it loud and in your face Wayne's Worldextreme close-up style, they stripped down their performance for A-Sides last week. Watch them perform "Jaw" from Primary Wave followed by an interview "impromptu-ly" led by Schreiber below. Oh, and catch another performance over at the A-Sides YouTube channel.

A-Sides "Delve Into Twelve" Countdown
Each week A-Sides unleashes its Top 12 tracks of the week AKA the "Delve Into Twelve"based on the following contributing factors: songs I'm playing out that particular week NO MATTER WHEN THEY WERE RELEASED (think overlooked songs, unreleased tracks, and old favorites), songs various publicists are trying to get me to listen to that I did and listened to and liked (phew), posts and trends I've noticed on my friends' Facebook walls, and - most importantly - the songs my 1 1/2+ year-old son gravitates toward. Yeah, you read that right. This weeks follows below (LW= last week's rank):

12. "Vanessa" - Grimes
11. "Royals" (LW-7) - Lorde
10. "You & I" (LW-6) - Crystal Fighters (Watch them perform the song live on A-Sides here)
9. "Jezebel" - 10,000 Maniacs
8. "Best Day Of My Life" (LW-11) - American Authors (* Watch the band perform this track on A-Sides next month!)
7. "Dreaming"(LW-5) - Smallpools
6. "Mind Your Manners" - Pearl Jam
5. "Hearts Like Ours"(LW-3) - The Naked and Famous
4. "Everything" - Nine Inch Nails
3. "Torches & Pitchforks"(LW-1) - Mona
2. "The Wire" (LW-4) - Haim
1. "Pompeii" (LW-2) - Bastille

About A-Sides Music
Jon Chattman's "A-Sides Music" series usually features artists (established or not) from all genres performing a track, and discussing what it means to them. This informal series focuses on the artist making art in a low-threatening, extremely informal (sometimes humorous) way. No bells, no whistles -- just the music performed in a random, low-key setting followed by an unrehearsed chat. In an industry where everything often gets overblown and over manufactured, I'm hoping this is refreshing.
