The Forgotscars: Honoring the Oscar Snubs

What's Your Reaction:

Such is the case every year, when the Oscar nominations were announced this morning there were several key omissions. No Julianne Moore? No Samantha Morton? Um, The Blind Side" as Best Picture? Really? Anyways, because snubs sting, I've concocted a way to honor the Oscar forgotten. I've selected some films and actors left in the dark this morning, and nominated them for "Forgotscars." Vote for your favorites from now until March 7. Unfortunately I can't offer any gold statues for any of the winners but in the court of public opinion, this vote matters. Here are the nominees...

Best Picture:
Invictus
Star Trek
The Fantastic Mr. Fox
(500) Days of Summer
The Hangover

Best Actor:
Matt Damon, The Informant!
Tobey Maguire, Brothers
Sharlto Copley, District 9
Ben Foster, The Messenger
Robert Downey Jr., Sherlock Holmes

Best Actress:
Maya Rudolph, Away We Go
Emily Blunt, The Young Victoria
Abbie Cornish, Bright Star
Michelle Monoghan, Trucker
Marion Cotillard, Nine

Best Supporting Actor:
Alfred Molina, An Education
Alec Baldwin, It's Complicated
Anthony Mackie, The Hurt Locker
James McAvoy, The Last Station
Zach Galifianakis, The Hangover

Best Supporting Actress:
Julianne Moore, A Single Man
Melanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds
Samantha Morton, The Messenger
Diane Kruger, Inglourious Basterds
Mariah Carey, Precious

Best Director:
Neill Blomkamp, District 9
Wes Anderson, Fantastic Mr. Fox
Spike Jonze, Where the Wild Things Are
Clint Eastwood, Invictus
Tom Ford, A Single Man

"Invictus" for Best Picture and Clint Eastwood for best director. It's a shame.

The biggest snub of all was "Pirate Radio".

I know it may sound corny, but I think Sam Worthington (best actor), Zoe Saldana (best actress), & Sigourney Weaver (best supporting actress) should have all been nominated for Avator. It must have been really difficult working in suits all day with wires attached and conveying the emotion and the motion to the computer to get the realism that they did get. It wasn't ALL technical, and those actors put a lot into it that made their characters work, after only a few minutes they looked absolutely natural to me and positively real and living and breathing. I guess because they were channeled through the computer, the judges would have thought it not fair to the "natural life" actors? Anyway, I saw it twice and LOVED IT.

Perhaps they need a new category for "Best Animated or Computer Assisted Actor, Actress, Supporting..." to handle these in the future, as there will likely be growth in this type film in the future.

The worst oversight is Julianne Moore for "A Single Man".

spike makes genius look too easy -- that and honoring a "children's" movie at the oscars in a serious category would make the octogenarians look fluffy. even if they did bury chucky heston with his gun barrel where it gave him the most pleasure in life -- no fluffy oldsters in the academy.

similarly i wasn't much surpised by young victoria's reception -- the academy loves period pieces and big dresses. but british accents are hard to understand even with your hearing aid in. they don't annunciate like good americans. so yes to crew -- no to cast.

long and short of it -- don't think quality -- think like you have a hard time keeping the dribble directed at you bib during dinner. then you can pick out academy nominations easily.

the worst oscar snub i can think of was emile hirsch for into the wild -- i have never seen anyone carry a movie by themself -- and probably never will again.

i think many of the nominations were of quality but i take the academy to task for "the blind side" inclusion - it's formulaic to say the least.

Biggest snub I saw was that Sam Rockwell should have gotten a Best Actor nomination for Moon.

SERIOUSLY!!!

He received no love for his performance and it is one of the singles best performances I have ever seen. He carried that entire movie acting against himself. Foolish awards people.

I was just about to post the exact same thing. I don't know how this performance could have been overlooked by the Academy. And then how do you also not include him in the Forgotscars??? An amazing perfomance, shamefully overlooked.

Thanks for the shout out to The Hangover. I'm late to the party, just having seen it recently. Of course it didn't stand a chance as a comedy, lacking Oscar gravitas. That and the unidimensional supporting characters (the wives, girlfriends, etc.) were actual weaknesses, but the Hangover was the Best Picture I saw this year.

See Up then. It's wittier, funnier, and you'll actually start to care a little. I say this as a 21-year-old male, squarely in the middle of The Hangover's demographic, and one who loves Zach Galifianakis' standup comedy.
