Jonah Lalas graduated from UCLA in 2002. Rather than go to graduate school like most of his peers, he spent the last 5 years as a union organizer with the Service Employees International Union. The early years consisted of organizing Los Angeles hospital workers to fight for better pay, health insurance, and a voice in patient care.

He then moved to Texas where as Organizing Director of the Houston Organization of Public Employees (HOPE), a joint SEIU/AFSCME local, he led the effort to organize 13,000 city employees, which eventually resulted in a historic first contract. In addition to guaranteed raises and benefits, the contract established that the City of Houston must now pay all of its employees a minimum of $10/hr.

During the Texas Obama campaign, Jonah coordinated the union's "get out the vote" campaign in Houston, which consisted of over 150 union members and volunteers. His recent piece on the challenges and opportunities for organizing in the South appears in the Spring 2008 issue of Dissent Magazine.

He was also recently elected as a National Delegate for Obama to the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Things are beginning to look a lot gloomier for proponents of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). Senator Arlen Specter, R-PA, a long time friend of unions recently flip-flopped and announced his opposition to this bill that would make it easier for workers to unionize. Several key Democrats like Senator...

Many thousands of Filipinos answered Roosevelt's call to join the U.S. forces fighting Japan in the Philippines, but had been denied the benefits they were promised until last month. When Obama's stimulus package passed, it contained a provision for a lump sum payment for these Filipino WWII veterans, which I...

Last week, after passage of Obama's stimulus bill, the Asian-American community found a specific reason to celebrate. After decades of activism, congress included a provision in the stimulus package that finally agreed to give Filipino World War II veterans, who fought on behalf of the United States, the full recognition...

The Obama administration has a real opportunity right now to improve labor standards in this country, but it begins with appointing a pro-active secretary of labor who truly supports the ability of workers to collectively bargain. Bush's former appointee Elaine Chao not only presided over what has been one of...

When someone makes $5.15 an hour, and is the sole breadwinner for three children, how do you talk to her about going on strike? How do you talk to a woman about standing up for herself on the job, with her husband yelling from...

During an ABC News-sponsored debate last spring in Philadelphia, Senator Hillary Clinton and even the debate's moderators made numerous charges against Senator Barack Obama. Analysts roundly panned the debate as a "gotcha" fest and devoid of substance. In a campaign appearance the next day talking about the debate, Obama reached...

Pelosi Saves Planet... For Oil Companies

I am so sick and tired of Democrats capitulating to right-wing demands. But last week, once again, the Democrats demonstrated they lack the courage to stand by their ideals, if that's what we can call them. In her weekly radio address, Nancy Pelosi stated she would consider offshore drilling and...
